Chapter 3: The Graveyard and the Guardian

The first thing I thought when I got to the cementery was how creepy it was.

There were stones with names and dates written down everywhere, the grass was really brown, probably because of it's bad maintanance. Some graves were decorated with flowers but others, were decorated with skulls from animals, I suppose.... I hope.

There was also a really big black tree in one of the corners of the graveyard, it had no leaves and it was about 2 metres thick. The place was really creepy but not that much in plain daylight, still, I wouldn't explore it at night even if you paid me.

I was thinking all this whilst heading for the cabin were Jerry told me the tools were supposed to be. The cabin was located in a corner of the graveyard, close to the really big black tree.

As I was getting close to the tree, I heard a loud noise, a howl, which suprised me. It was coming from the tree, so I went to expect it, like any sane person would do.

I was about 5 metres from the tree when I saw it, a big black scary looking dog.

The dog was a few metres ahead of the tree but I could still see it's features perfectly. It was about 1,40 metres long, with black fur covering it from head to toe. It also had sharp claws and fangs that could probably take one of my arms off easily in one bite. However, it's most outstanding charasteristic was the tail. The tail had pointy spikes all over it, which I hadn't seen in any animal I had seen in my life.

There was no doubt: It was a magical beast. I heard of them from the stories my parents told me, I've always wanted to see one since I was a child, but not like this.

It also had a metal collar around it, probably so It wouldn't move too far away from the tree, for some reason.

I was really suprised and scared when I saw it but I was a curious kid, so I would always make the mistake of getting closer to get a better look of it. I was careful not to step on any branch, like people usually get themselves caught or killed, still, it somehow sensed my presence.

It turned to see me and stared at my eyes while I started at his eyes. Then, it started growling and barking as if it didn't want me to get any closer to him. I didn't know what to do, I frezeed, that was a scary dog. Because it saw how I wasn't obeying him, it started heading straight towards me.

Gotta say, that was the scariest moment of my life, at that time. I thought I was gonna die, that my life was going to end there, I didn't know what to do. It was about a metre and a half away from me so I closed my eyes and waited for it to happen, when suddenly, someone pulled me back from behind and a small fireball was shot against the monster. Although it didn't seem to do much, it still backed down.

"Hey there, you don't want to play with that dog, it has really bad temper" - said Jerry, grabbing me from behind.

"Th-that was terrifying, what the hell is that?" - I asked, my voice full of shock.

"That, young man, is a magical beast and if you were wondering, some little fire magic I can do. Although that was the full power of the spell, it still has it's uses"- he proudly said.

"Wow that was amazing, I wish I could do magic like that. What kind of beast is it?"

"It is called a Banther. A C rank magical beast, it's close to B rank, can be found in forests of the area and dark places. It's main features are it's pointy teeth, the claws, the spiky tail and the black fur covering it"- he explained to me.

"Wait, how do you even know that and what is it even doing here?!" - He sound like a tour guide talking about the monsters from the habitat. I really can't imagine how he would know all that information nor what an almost B monster is doing in a cementery.

"Hey, I know my stuff. That beast has always been there, even before I was born. It's like the guardian of the tree, no one knows. As to why I know, my parents and sister also died in a fire long ago, same as your parents. I usually come here to say a prayer for them or bring flowers from the fields nearby, when I found out about the monster, I researched a bit on it." - he explained to me as he looked over with a sad face at three big rocks with names written down near us. Ups.

"Sorry to hear that but hey, look on the bright side, at least we have something in commun, although I don't think it's that good.... you know, I kinda regret saying that" - I quickly recovered.

"You don't have to worry, it's water under the bridge. Nevertheless, it still hurts me sometimes. That's why I helped you earlier, because I know what you are going through right now, you are trying to make as if it weren't that bad but deep inside, you don't know what to do and you are pretty lost" - he confessed to me.

"Yeah, I kinda do, still haven't processed everything yet. However, I know I can get through all this" - I said with a smile on my face.

"Haha" - he laughed.

"What are you laughing about?" - I asked confusedly

"It's just that you are the same as your father. With that kind of personality, always looking on the bright side, I really liked that about him" - he cheerfully remembered.

"Really?" - I asked excitedly

"Yeah, your hair and face are the same. Short black hair, always messy. You always have a serious face on, as if you were expecting something to happen, on alert but in truth, you are a cheerful person that likes to laugh a lot. You also have your mother's beautiful blue sky eyes, just like the sea." - I looked up at him with a suprised expresion, he read me like an open book. I felt kinda embarrased at that point, I didn't know he knew me so well.

"That's good to know, I've always wanted to be like my father, he knew how to use the sword and taught me a bit. One day, he told me a story about how he once fought a group of 6 goblins all on his own" - I really liked that story, I would always ask him to tell it to me at least twice a week before sleep.

"Yes, that young fellow was always up to something in his adventuring days. Sadly, if I remember correctly, he retired early to spend more time with your mother" - Jerry seems about 55 years old, he must have known mum and dad for a long time.

"Oh, look we've arrived here" - Jerry announced.

"I'll go in and get the shovels" - I said as I paced faster for the old cabin

I got the shovels without problem and we headed for the place reserved for my family in the graveyard.

Then, with all jokes aside, we began the burial for my parents.
