Chapter 2: Chapter 2

The sun had just begun to rise, and as the morning broke all that could be heard was the sound of a woman in pain. Not the pain of death, but the pain of life. Her child was finally being born into this world. After hours of grueling pain, the mother now held her child and she loved him. She knew his life would be filled with hardships, but she swore to be there for him regardless. However, the only thing she could do for him now was hold him. The mother and grandmother of the child were there, observing the newborn child. The mother's name was Elixia Kamala, a beautiful wolf demi-human with sky-blue hair and blue eyes, and daughter of Pauline and Roman Kamala.

"He's precious," spoke the grandmother, standing next to the mother's bed. "I know," responded the mother in a soft tone. The mother could not take her eyes off the child, he had begun to fall into a deep sleep. "I know it'll be hard for you Elixia, but I'll always be here for you if you need me. "I know Mother, thank you," spoke the child's mother. "He looks just like you when you were first born," spoke the grandmother. "Really? I suppose he does, but you can also tell where he got 'some' of his features from," replied Elixia as she shifted her gaze toward her mother. "True, but regardless of whether he will be present in your son's life does not change the fact that he is yours and yours alone," said the grandmother. "I suppose you're right, mother," said Elixia before once again fixating her gaze on her son. She could easily tell that the child had received many of his features from her, but the constant reminder of the man who had left her would remain on the child for all his life in the form of his horns. The pup had two small red horns on his head, both were the color of blood. His hair and his tail were scarlet red, contrasting his mother's sky-blue hair and tail. All that mattered to Elixia at that moment was the child she held in her hands; for now, all were content, and the mother of the half-demi-human, half-demon newborn could go home.

"What will you name him, Elixia?" Said the grandmother. Elixia paused for a while to think, staring down at the child as she attempted to come up with a name for him. "Toranto Kamala," she spoke. "So, you have decided to give him our last name then," said the grandmother. "Yes, if he does not wish to be a part of his son's life then I will not name my son after him" replied Elixia. "I understand," said the grandmother. At last, Toranto Kamala was born, a child with an unpredictable future. Soon after the child was named, the nurse returned to take the child and test him to ensure that he was healthy. The mother and the grandmother complied and Toranto was taken away by the nurse. Once the nurse was gone, Elixia and her mother began to talk about their current situation. "You saw his horns, right?" Elixia asked her mother. "Of course, I saw his horns," replied her mother. "I was hoping he wouldn't have inherited that from his father," said Elixia. She looked down saddened by the fact that her son possessed the trademark horns of a newborn demon. She knew all too well what it was like dealing with the hardships that came with one's identity in the kingdom she grew up in. She, and her family, were demi-humans. Since demi-humans were always in the minority, they lived as impoverished outcasts in the only places they knew as home. Still, the demon lands were currently the best place for a demi-human to live, as humans had no intentions of sharing their freedoms with demi-humans. "We both know he'll have it hard, but he'll have us, and we'll have him. We can all make it through this together." Elixia's mother spoke with a kindness that Elixia had grown up knowing in her mother, no matter how much trouble Elixia had gotten herself in she always had her mother and her father to lean on.

"I'm sorry, mother," spoke Elixia. "Elixia we've been over this," Elixia's mother began to speak, immediately knowing where Elixia was about to go and feeling a wave of guilt as her daughter sat atop the bed on the brink of tears but was cut off by Elixia once more. "But I'm not just apologizing to you this time! I'm apologizing to him too, Toranto's going to have to deal with so much in his life because of me." Elixia's cries could be heard from outside of the room, but the other nurses would not dare intervene. Elixia's mother walked to the bed and hugged her daughter, tears were flowing from both of their faces and Elixia's sorrow echoed throughout the room as her mother held her.

The nurse assigned to Elixia laid Toranto down in the small chamber to be tested by herself and the doctor before her to determine the child's health. They quickly determined that Toranto was healthy and retained physical characteristics akin to both demons and demi-humans. The most notable of these features is his blood. They took him out of the small chamber he was placed into and walked back to Elixia's room where she and her mother were still talking about Toranto and how he would be raised. The nurse and the doctor walked back into the room; the nurse holding Toranto. The nurse gave Toranto to Elixia who was happy to have her newborn back in her arms. The doctor began to tell Elixia and her mother about the results of their tests on Toranto. "Well, he certainly is healthy, everything checks out. But…" The doctor hesitated to vocalize his next thought as he assumed that Elixia was unaware of Toranto's condition. "I know" were the first words to come from Elixia as she immediately sensed what the doctor was about to tell her. "Pardon me?" The doctor said politely. "I know what he is," Elixia replied. "I see. Well, I can elaborate if you'd like to know more about it," the doctor said. The doctor's tone had shifted from fear-filled to helpful, now trying to bring peace to this mother who was in distress about her son's identity. "Yes, I think that would be useful, thank you," Elixia said looking at the doctor. "Well," the doctor began, "his vital signs are normal, he's a perfectly healthy baby. He's just not entirely a demi-human. His blood appears to be a fifty fifty mix of demi-human blood and demon blood, explaining why it looks darker in color than normal blood. That likely explains all the complications you had during your pregnancy, demon blood seems to have a negative affect on other living tissue it interacts with. It's nothing short of a miracle that the blood in his body was able to stabilize without affecting his or your health."

All while the doctor was talking, Elixia could not help but occasionally look at Toranto and pray for his safety. "Okay…thank you, doctor, I appreciate everything you two have done for me," she said looking down at Toranto. "Good, I'm happy to hear it," the doctor said before smiling at them and leaving the room. "I will help you all get sorted and ready to leave the hospital, little Toranto is healthy enough to go home with you tonight," the nurse said looking at Elixia. "Thank you, nurse, I appreciate it," Elixia said. Elixia's mother and the nurse began to help Elixia out of the hospital bed. Once everything was off, Elixia could once again move after hours of being confined to her bed. She felt an instant wave of fatigue flow through her as she stood up, the nurse noticed this and went to get a hospital chair for her. Elixia sat down in the chair and the nurse began to wheel her out of the room. Everything seemed to go smoothly on the surface, her pregnancy, the delivery, and Toranto's health. But, on the inside, everyone questioned how Toranto's life would turn out. The horns on his head serve as a constant reminder of what he is. Still, his mother would hope and pray for a different outcome. She would pray that the child be happy and safe and would come to peace with what he is and what he will become. She prayed for the happiness of her child, just as any mother would.

The nurse wheeled Elixia out of the room and into the front of the hospital, Elixia received many passing looks at her son when she was being wheeled out. It was obvious what they were staring at, of course. Elixia was wheeled outside, her mother following them, and she was able to stand up to get back into their horse-drawn carriage. "Thank you," Elixia told her mother and the nurse. "You are very welcome, please come back if you have any complications," said the nurse. "Of course," Elixia said before closing the door of the carriage. Elixia's mother went to the front of the carriage, sat down, and grabbed the leash. She commanded the horses to start walking and they began to depart. Although still in much disarray, Elixia was proud that she had finally delivered her one and only child.
