Chapter 29: Chapter 29 – The Predator

A street lamp was flickering, suddenly it flared and was extinguished by a cool gust of wind. Suddenly a noise could be heard.

Screaming could be heard throughout the town. Wails of grief and torment cloaked the town like a mist of blood. Death was felt from all the corners and no one could escape. In one house a family were covering each other's ears to block the horrendous sound.

Oak was staring over the town from high up in the castle tower wearing a grim face. He hadn't been so grim since the ravine of Vangas Khan. He was grim for different reasons now, fighting a friend was different to fighting for scraps.

Waving his hand, Oak teleported to the garrison. The air stunk of blood, sweat and tears. Blood from the cuts and deaths, sweat from the retaliation and tears of pain from the torture. Oak was holding in his gags thanks to his experience.

Oak focused on his surroundings, Silk would be upon him soon. He started focusing his magical energy and infusing it into the space around him so manipulation could start quicker and detect intruders. His magic was not unique but was difficult to use effectively. He focused on spatial magic and was near useless comparatively on the others.

A clicking echoed through the corridor, it didn't sound natural.

A knife came from behind him, he retaliated swiftly by smoothly pivoting. Spying the knife he lashed out and using his magic to slow down the knife he caught it.

A body rushed to strike him. Using the karambit Oak stabbed at the opponent's knife causing them to back away from each other.

"Silk, snap out of it," Oak shouted.

Silk replied with a strange clicking sound.

"If you insist," Oak answered Silk's clicking. He didn't understand him but pretended.

Rushing quickly he charged at Silk, Silk didn't charge but instead discharged demonic energy. Demonic energy had the peculiar ability to strengthen the body while poisoning the air around himself, it could be manipulated freely.

This was bad news for Oak, it meant Silk was going to start breaking into his demonic self.

The demon within Silk was tricky, furious and powerful. He went by the name of Filum. It was from a dead language in a blocked off world so the name would remain in mystery.

The clicking sound suddenly stopped and words came out of Filum's mouth. "Let the show commence," he announced with a smile while blocked Oak's advance with pure demonic energy.

He felt like nails had embedded themselves into him pinning him to the wall. Oak was not too happy about this.

Sweating coldly with fear Oak shouted, "please stop this."

"We both know I can't do that. I finally have my freedom back and it's glorious."

"If you insist on this fight, so be it." Oak felt inside him until he detected a seal of his own creation. The seal locked his power and unleashing it took its toll. The toll was not on himself but space itself.

Shouting Oak broke the seal and the demonic nails were stripped from his body. Warping the world stones cracked and fell while portals opened revealing worlds in-between Filum and Oak yet transparent enough to see each other through the infinite number of universes. The stones crumbled into nothingness revealing not the outside moonlight but instead nothingness.

Oak had ripped this place out of this universe and into his own. He had personal control of the surroundings in this universe. The cost was the stability of the universes, every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

Filum started sprinting towards Oak, he countered by pushing his arms forward making the space distort. This left the corridor longer than before and the space between the two bigger.

Clapping his hands Oak split space where Filum stood splitting him in two. The two parts of Filum dissipated leaving residue demonic energy. Oak swung round launching a kick into Filum behind him which also dissipated.

The walls started shaking and the versions of the demon kept crawling out from them, all made from demonic energy and all deadly. Oak stamped his feet and distorting space yet again the energy was dispersed into nothingness.

The space wash shaking ruthlessly now, the universe couldn't take its laws being broken so often. This miniscule universe wasn't big enough or powerful enough to withstand the complex magic by Oak.

"Are we both going to die in here?" Filum asked with an edge of fear appearing in his voice.

"Of course not," Oak panted. "You are still controlling my friend's body."

Filum appeared from nothingness and knife in hand prepared to stab the now defenceless Oak.

"You wouldn't dare." Oak said fearlessly. "If I die, you can't escape this collapsing universe." This stopped the demon in his tracks.

"Well, get us out of here then." Filum spat annoyed. It would do neither of them any good to die in this universe.

Oak grunted in recognition and started channelling his energy into the universe. The universe started splintering.

"What are you doing?" Filum questioned in a demanding voice. This was not going to Filum's plan, once he was on steady ground one swift stroke would kill Oak. Admittedly it was a quick and not well thought out plan but detailed plans always broke down, the vaguer the better.

Oak grunted once again and the universe shattered. Light poured in from all sides showing a new universe, this was the true colours of Oak's universe. Power flowed into him from the universe reinvigorating him.

Filum was astounded, he was in a twisted land where the ground was floorboards, furniture was wooden, wooden soldiers and wooden vehicles. It was a world of wood, trees grew from the floorboards elegantly, everything was a work of art.

"Did you think it would be so easy?" Oak asked condescendingly. "I am Oak the carpenter of the workshop. None of the workshop were easy people especially Silk. You are nothing compared to him." Oak roared now he had the upper hand.

"All I am is an improvement from that wretch of a man. He has so many worries, regrets and fears. I am his salvation." Filum retorted.

Oak flicked his hands and nails appeared embedding themselves into him and onto a tree. "Please stop talking," Oak commanded.

Seeing his own blood Silk screeched, "Why, for god's sake, why?"

"You are nothing but a hypocrite," Oak judged. "Silk is a good man, he is a man of virtues, kindness and justice. You are literally the spawn of the devil."

"Take that back," Silk shouted. Demonic energy started converging on him and in turn his body started changing physically. Anger was a catalyst for a demon's transformation.

Oak was startled as any change physical change was permanent. Rushing he struck Filum and rendered him unconscious. Quickly he absorbed the chaotic demonic energy and dispersed it harmlessly from his body.

Next was the most dangerous part, awakening Silk's consciousness.

He stretched and got ready for the delve but suddenly Filum gasped and got back up. Oak went to strike again.

"No, don't. I'm Silk," he shouted.

"Really, what happened in Vangas Khan?" Oak asked.

"Okay, so I'm not Silk but I'm second best," Filum retorted.

"At least being conscious makes things easier." Grabbing a sword made from magic Oak stabbed it into Filum.

"Damn you," he gasped.

"It is not me but you who will be damned." Oak cut away not leaving a mark but directly attacking Filum's magical energy and power.

The wisps of magical energy caused a whispering noise in Oak's ears, "Death by death sleep."

"Where worlds shall meet," Oak replied softly.

Silk rubbed his head getting up. "I've heard those words before. I keep hearing those words. Where am I?"

"Right down to the nitty gritty." Oak sighed exhaustedly. "You are in my world. Your demonic self shouldn't trouble you for a while and those words spoken at the end were a prophecy."

Silk looked around, "this is certainly different to when I remember seeing it last. It was a whole lot more treey."

"I'm king now. My work is a reflection of myself so thus this world is a reflection of me. Things change and this world changes with me."

"Truly philosophical. I honestly don't understand what you say half of the time."

"I am from a genius race and am a genius. Wonderfully great and ultimately a hundred-fold smarter." He arrogantly proclaimed.

"Can we please not stay here?" Silk asked.

"Fine," oak muttered.
