Chapter 2: Lotus Bud 2
My maid but most importantly best friend Huiqing was always cheerful but today she was even more so. She laid the package in front of me and opened it. Revealing a beautiful silk dress the color of the bluest sky, that had a sheer covering and lotus blossoms decorating the bottom of the dress, of course my mothers idea entirely. "Look how beautiful miss!" With a large grin "you will be the most beautiful lady there!" She said.
Staring at the beautiful dress made of some of the finest materials. I saw my future...not particularly one I wanted. I thought my fathers success in the war would grant me a great marriage of my choice to nice lord, like some of my father young pupils. Where my chances of finding love and peace would be greater. However my mother came to me a year ago and told me that our family has been honored. I knew what this meant, I know how people look at me...how the Emperor would look at me. All they see is a great beauty, but I am so much more and want so much more.
My aunt was part of the last Emperors harem, she was a great beauty as well. I only met her once and she offered me some of her wisdom.
With a very serious face she said "As women our only power is our beauty or so they think. You must study and become well versed is many subjects. Beauty will get you there but you must be wise to stay there". It took me a while to understand what she meant, I was young and she scared me.
My father said his sister always had a cruel heart. A few months after I saw her she almost tainted our families reputation and was throw into the cold palace. I was never told why, but my father doesn't speak of it.
If my mother wasn't so persistent I would dress in a more plain manner. I'm honestly scared to be chosen, what if my life is not easy in the palace?
I shall pray to the Lotus Blossom Goddess, she has always granted me guidance before.
