Chapter 1: not quite alone

He'd been sleeping curled up in the woods, his back against a rock and his head against the tree. He woke up stiff, eyes still sore from the tears he'd she'd last night. He sniffed as he wiped them.

He remembered being nearly drowned, then he remembered coughing and sputtering beside the creak, pushing himself up to see the charged remains of the man he'd called his father. He'd jumped back with a gasp, and then he'd started running. He'd kept running untill he couldn't run anymore. Then he guessed he must have curled up by this tree and rock and wept untill he'd falen asleep.

head aching from where it had been leaning against the wood. He groaned slightly as he rubbed it, then used the rock behind him to help push himself up into a standing position. He turned so that the rock was in front of him, stenched both arms on it and arched his back, neck and shoulders and started to wander what in the world he would do now.

He was cold and hungry. The only clothes he had was the nightwear he'd been wearing when his father - rather, his mother's husband - had dragged him out of bed. And he had no idea how to find his own food out here. Going back to the farm was out of the question. He couldn't face going back there again.

His thought were interrupted when something small and solid fell on top of his head then laned on the rock in front of him. He exclaimed slightly, rubbing his head, and looked up into the tree. A squirrel looked back at him.

He picked up the acorn the squirrel had dropped. "Itu sedikit kasar." (That was a little rude) He told the squirrel. But still, he held out the acorn to the squirrel when it came scuttling down to retrieve it. The squirrel took it, then ran back up the tree.

As he watched, the squirrel scuttled to the end of one the branches. He took a few steps back and saw what looked like a round piece of fruit hanging from the end of the branch the squirrel was working at. With a slight snap, the fruit fell away and into the young boys hand. (He tried to ignore the faint blue glow that had surrounded his hand before the fruit fell into it.)

He looked up at squirrel. "Terima kasih." (thank you)

He settled himself back between the tree and the rock. The squirrel came and sat on the rock behind him. It was only after he took a bite that he thought "this isn't poisonous for humans is it?"

The squirrel cocked its head and shook its bushy tail.

"Eh, s'pose it doesn't matter. If it is, I'll end up dead either way." At the very least, it tasted joicy and sweet, so that was a good sign.

"So what's your story, tuan tupai?" He asked the squirrel, and then started laughing at himself. He was in a terrible situation, he'd just lost everything he'd ever known, has little access to food or warmth and yet here he was talking to a squirrel. "Aku pasti sudah gila." (I must be going mad) He said, absently stroking the squirrel between the ears.

Some of what Magnus says is in Indonesia but I don't know enough of the language to make everything he's says Indonesia. Consider this just me practicing. I apologize if it does get confusing, him switching from Indonesian to English. Just try and pretend it's all Indonesian
