Chapter 2: Roaming Spirits

"Want to know more interesting things about our king?" The kids all nodded and gathered around mama whilst I remained at the far back with a distance that wouldn't stop me from listening to her many stories about the 'no face king.'

"The king is someone we adult see in good times and bad. A man who's so great in his heart and soul. He cares for all of us, just as much as he cares for his gold. He fights to protect us, make sure there's food in the city for man to child. We can do nothing but forever love and respect him."

A kid amongst the small gathering rose a hand interrupting her short speech "Mama! Is it true that the king plans to marry one of us" the hall became noisy as everyone began to whisper about that rumour. A rumour that only I knew was true.

Mama wouldn't lie but she wasn't going to reveal the absolute truth "That is correct. If you all behave well maybe he'd pick one of the pretty girl's here?" the girls were excited, they planned on how they'd be beautiful when they grow up and challenged each other on who'd make the perfect queen. It was something like a beauty pageant to them all.

It had only been a year since I last encountered him in his throne room. Was he really going to marry me? Would he still remember? What if he forgets? Would they end up killing me?

Mama left us to play and walked to the direction of the kitchen, probably to check on lunch. The other kids ran to the garden while I remained glued to my seat.

I've managed to put behind my past. A year ago, there was no day I wouldn't wake up in the middle of the night after having dreams of those horrible demons. I'd pray afterwards for the safety of the other kids and myself. I hope no one else goes through what I've been through. The terrible things I've seen at a young age. I wouldn't wish my enemies the same.

Later at night, Mama put as all to bed but I was awake. Just staring at the ceiling, doing nothing else. With time I got engulfed by the warmth of my bed and I gave in to the call of sleep.

"KID'S GET UP!!! PLEASE THERE'S NO TIME!!!" mama was at the door, blood stains on her night gown as she screamed randomly tapping children hard to wake them up. We were all scared and confused. What we knew was that something was going on, something bad and scary. Mama was never scared, but tonight something put her in a dreadful state.

She motivated us to keep running until we get to the emergency exit but once we got there, we pulled to a stop. Something was there. Something that looked like the same monsters that attacked my village, and ate all my people. It sat on the floor comfortably eating...eating...

"Who's that?" A girl burst into tears, her voice shaky as she covered her mouth to muffle her scream. Actually, Someone amongst us was missing...Where was Charles?

The monster didn't seem to know we were there, Mama had to make us turn and leave Charles behind. We knew he was already dead, there was no point trying to intervene.

The head of the demon slowly turned and we could see the hand of Charles hanging from it's mouth. In seconds we zoomed off, scared of looking back. We were sure the demon was right behind us, and we were reducing in number until we got to our room door which Mama closed shut. The monster was trying to break it down, but we helped her hold back the door and with time, the banging stopped.

We weren't sure if we should let go but Mama told us to run. I had to recount. There were thirty six of us that woke up, but now we're only ten. The young ones couldn't keep up with out pace.  It was like history was repeating itself. I was sure I was bound to die that Night, along with the other kids who were already in a traumatized state.

"Go!!! Run!!! Find a night watcher. Please, before it's too late and the demon increases in size!" We didn't want to leave mama. "Find the night watcher! I'll be fine" we had to obey. There was no other choice but to leave.

We ran around the streets looking for a night watcher. It was too dark for us to see anything, we didn't have a lamp with us but that wasn't going to make us give up. Mama was still there and she was counting on us. We had to save her.

Luckily we found a light source coming from a defence tower. We were screaming to get the attention of the sleeping Men. We tried everything possible to get their attention until  one of them managed to wake up.

"Who goes there?" He looked at all our faces but once his eyes met mine, I was sure I was the one that startled him. "What are you doing outside your foster home?" That question felt more directed to me. I've not stepped out of the Foster home but other kids have. I knew it was the King's order because I was something like his jewel.

"A demon!!!" We echoed. "Help mama!" The man blew a horn so loud we had to cover our ears. The others with him quickly got on their feet and jumped down from the tower.

One had to stay back to watch over us whilst the others ventured down the road leading to our foster home.

It was a good opportunity to level up, it'd been a while since the Watchers killed a demon, they were sure the king would be proud. They kicked down the front door and sprinted into different rooms individually.

The room was already smelling like decay. There was nothing new about children being victims of demons. They've somewhat gotten used to crossing over the corpse of children. If there was one thing they've learnt, it's that crying won't bring them back. A dead man, is a dead man. In the world they lived in there was no pity. Majority of the Guild members lost someone so dear to them, that's why they joined the Guild led by the King himself. It was their motivation, to avenge and prevent anyone else from suffering the same trauma they passed through.

It wouldn't be a smooth operation but there was always an easy way to cover every case of massacre up so the people wouldn't be scared but always think they were forever safe.

One of the men scouting could hear sounds coming from the other side of the wall and there was a door that could link him to the other room. He made sure he was properly equipped not only with weapons but spells too. He quickly dashed into the room and aimed his crossbow at the next thing he saw "What the..." the demon was a child. It was feeding on the woman employed to watch over the kids, especially the next queen.

Cases of Demons shape shifting as humans was becoming rampant. Only a few can tell them apart, the King included.

He shot his crossbow and the demon died instantly. That was just a level two demon, if he wanted a promotion, he needed to find the rare kinds which are hard to defeat. He moved close to the two corpses and separated the woman from the tiny monster's tight grip even thought it was dead.

The next day the King visited the scene and he was given the breakdown of everything that was discovered. The death toll was up to seventy percent of the children, especially from the age two to ten. The survivors were only seventeen and their age range was twelve to sixteen.

All the King had in Mind was his jewel. He didn't even know her name. "Is she alive?"

The leader of the report team nodded and he turned to leave "Take her to the maiden academy and take the other children to a different foster home. She's of age to learn about the country she'll soon be queen of."
