Chapter 12: Chapter 12
Arthur was pensive in his room, and was thinking about what his friend said this afternoon.
In fact, he felt that what his friend had said was true. If he opens his own business with the money he has, then he doesn't have to accept the arranged marriage. But he is not sure if the business will be successful, and flourishing. Instead, he was afraid that the business would be fail.
And now, he remembered again time a week given by his father. Within that a week, he had to prepare himself to marry Maureen, because his father wanted him to marry her immediately, but he was not ready, and didn't want to rush into marriage. If the allotted time is up, but he is still not ready to marry, then he must immediately leave the house, and lose everything he owns, including the company he currently manages.
Remembering that, it made his head hurt. In fact, now he is even more felt pressure by his father's words.
But suddenly, he turned his head towards the door, when he heard a knock from outside.
"Yes, who?" he said.
"Mother" answered someone out there.
"Just open it, ma'am, the door is not locked," he said.
But there were no more answers out there, then a door opened by someone, "What are you doing, Arthur?" asked a woman in her fifties, who was Arthur's mother.
"Just daydreaming, Mom" replied Arthur dryly.
Immediately his mother walked over to him, without closing the door again. Then after arriving near him, she immediately stopped her steps, and grabbed his shoulder, "What are you daydreaming about?" she asked.
With a little heavy, Arthur sighed, and lowered his head, thus making his mother confused, and frowned, "I was thinking about the arranged marriage, Mom," he replied.
"Thinking about the arranged marriage?" asked the woman in her fifties, frowning again, and without taking her eyes off her son, "Didn't you already accept it?" she continued
"That's right, I did accept the arranged marriage, but with compulsion. Because if I refuse it, then I will become homeless, and lose everything I have" replied Arthur, with his head still lowered.
Slowly, his mother rubbed his shoulder, and said, "I know how you feel, Arthur. But your father did that, for your good and for your future too. He doesn't want you to get the wrong woman, especially considering your position in the company you manage, surely out there are so many women who are eyeing you, and want your treasure. Therefore, he really wants you to accept the arranged marriage, because he knows, if Maureen is the right woman for you, she is a very good woman, and suitable to be your wife." she said.
"But I don't love her, Mom. After all, love cannot be forced, and a marriage without love will not be happy," said Arthur, raising his head, and turning to his mother.
Immediately his mother nodded his head, and rubbed his shoulders, "I know that, but I'm sure that after marriage you will love her," she said, smiling.
But Arthur just sighed, and lowered his head again.
"Arthur, once again I tell you, you will never regret if you marry Maureen, instead you will feel like the luckiest man in this world" said his mother, who rubbed his shoulder again.
"What if I refuse this arranged marriage, Mom?" asked Arthur, without turning to his mother, "I'm ready, if I have to leave this house, and lose everything I own, including the company I manage," he continued.
"But where will you sleep later, Arthur? And how do you survive out there?" asked his mother, looking at him from the side.
"I can rent an apartment for a while Mom, using the money I have, then the rest I can use to open a business" replied Arthur, while lowering his head.
"But are you sure?" asked his mother, and Arthur immediately nodded, "Opening a new business is not easy, Arthur. Not to mention, if the business is not successful, it will only be a waste of time, and money used for capital" she continued.
"I know that, Mom. But I will try, so that the business can run, and not fail. After all, this is the time for me to live independently, and not depend on mom and dad," said Arthur, with his head still down.
Hearing what Arthur just said, made his mother immediately speechless, and stared at him without saying anything. But now, that woman in her fifties, began to feel worried with her only child, she was so afraid that Arthur would really become a bum out there.
"Cannot!"
They immediately turned their heads, when they heard the voice, and they could see that Arthur's father who don't knows since sometime, was standing at the door of the room.
"You won't be able to live independently, Arthur. Besides, all the money you have that you get from working in my company, then that means that money is my money too. So if you choose to reject the arranged marriage, then you get out of this house, without bringing any money, and only bring your clothes," said his father, while staring at him slightly sharply.
"Jeremy, you can't act like that to Arthur, don't you feel sorry for him?" said Arthur's mother, staring at his husband.
"Let it be, Julie! So he thinks that I do this, for his good and his future. So with that, he will think a thousand times, to reject this arranged marriage. Besides, life out there is not as easy as he thought" said his father, who was still glaring at him.
Arthur took a deep breath, and closed his eyes. Feel, he want denied what his father said, but he couldn't.
"Once again I say, think about my words well, Arthur. Don't let you regret it" said his father, so that he immediately opened his eyes, "And I will make sure, you will become a bum, if you leave this house" he continued.
But Arthur was silent, and lowered his head, without saying anything.
"And for you Julie, let's leave him, so he can think well" said his father.
Immediately his mother nodded his head, and turned to him, "Then I'll sleep first, good night son, have a nice dream" she said, rubbing Arthur's shoulder. Then, she immediately walked over to her husband, and they left Arthur's room.
As for Arthur, he sighed roughly, and lay down on the bed.
