Chapter 67: Chapter 67: Ambush

Splash!

The fishing net was pulled out of the water, and Jack let out a deep sigh.

In the net, there lay a single apple.

"At least this one hasn't been bitten by anyone."

Recalling the last time he fished up an apple with a bite taken out of it.

Jack took the apple out of the net and wiped it casually on his clothes before taking a big bite.

"Mmm~ not bad at all!" He exclaimed, savoring the sweet and delicious taste on his taste buds. He quickly ate the whole apple, leaving not even the core.

He couldn't help but think that he was unlucky to have caught something like this on his first attempt. It seemed like this place just wasn't meant for him.

"I'm full!"

After eating and drinking enough, Jack lay down on the ground again.

Looking at the gem floating on the water not far away, he muttered a few words under his breath and gradually fell asleep.

.....

For the next few days, everything was peaceful. Wanda and Pietro went out every day to find work or join in protests, despite often being chased by the intelligence agency. They were familiar with the escape ways and always managed to get away.

As for Jack, he continued to sleep in bed all day and was completely unaware of the outside world. At first, Wanda was worried that he might starve or die of thirst in this state. She tried to feed him but soon realized that it was impossible to make him eat.

After two days, Pietro noticed that Jack seemed to be doing better. This eased their worries, at least they didn't have to worry about him starving to death.

Remembering the day she rescued him, Wanda began to suspect that Jack might be an alien, as his ability to survive without food or water could not be explained.

With this thought, Wanda felt even more relieved.

It's unclear whether it was due to the recent raid by the intelligence agency or something else, but Pietro noticed that there were many new faces in Sokovia these days.

As a precaution, they didn't participate in any protests, and the siblings lay low for a while. So, besides working to make money, Wanda spent the rest of her time with Jack.

Whether it was because she hadn't had many friends or for some other reason, Wanda seemed to have endless things to say.

Every time, She would sit on the ground, lean against the bed, hold a book in her hand, and have the rusty knife beside her while murmuring to herself or to Jack about international affairs, the situation in Sokovia, her brother Pietro, her family, and interesting things that happened at work.

These were all things she shared.

Jack always listened silently, finding it interesting and wanting to understand Wanda better.

Of course, there was some gossip mixed in, providing some entertainment for the bored Jack.

For example, he heard that Tony Stark had found a new model for a magazine.

Wanda also repeatedly criticized the rising stock prices of Stark Industries, claiming that they were profiting from hurting innocent people.

Last week, the girl that Pietro had been trying to impress at the convenience store got married. It made him very sad, and he ended up drinking a lot and spending all the money he had earned that day.

When Jack heard this, he suddenly realized why Pietro had reeked of alcohol that day.

Listening to Wanda's complaints and mutterings, Jack felt that life was not bad at all.

Until this day!

Wanda was talking to Jack as usual, sharing her observations of the day and her worries about the future.

Suddenly, the door was violently kicked open, and Pietro stumbled into the cabin, collapsing onto the ground with a loud thud.

Wanda was alarmed by the noise and hurried outside to see what was happening. She found Pietro lying on the ground and, upon turning him over, was shocked and bursting into tears.

Pietro had a wound on his right chest, and blood was staining his shirt. He had lost a lot of blood, and his face was pale.

"Quick, quick, quick, leave! Wanda, go quickly..."

Pietro lay weakly in Wanda's arms, gasping for breath and urging her in a small voice, "It's EKO... EKO... Scorpion... go quickly!"

Upon hearing this name, Wanda's face turned pale, and despair filled her eyes.

EKO Scorpion, Even regular people like Wanda and Pietro had heard of this organization, a highly skilled covert assassination unit employed by the Sokovian Intelligence Agency to neutralize both domestic and foreign threats on behalf of the Government.

The Sokovian Government owed a lot of its power and success to EKO Scorpion. They were a highly skilled secret assassination force working for the Sokovian Intelligence Agency, who helped eliminate various domestic and international threats.

They usually dealt with different enemy countries or warlords, but why would they target two ordinary civilians like them.

Instinctively, Wanda looked towards the room.

The only possible option was him!

Suddenly, a bunch of footsteps were heard outside, and through the wooden door, Wanda saw the EKO Scorpion surrounding the outside.

Soon, a voice came from outside.

"Listen up inside! Put down your weapons and surrender immediately. Otherwise, we will have to force our way in!"

Wanda was at a loss for what to do, staring blankly at the door and the EKO Scorpion outside.

Should she run? But how and where?

Could she abandon her brother and flee? She couldn't bring herself to do it.

What should she do now?

After a minute passed, the soldiers outside seemed to be impatient. They kicked down the wooden door and rushed into the small cabin with their well-equipped gear.

"Clear!"

The cabin was tiny, and they quickly confirmed there was no danger. Two members were dispatched to search the other room. The leader of the group approached Wanda, looking down at her and Pietro. The eyes behind his mask were cold and empty as if he was not looking at humans, but animals.

"Captain, we found something!"

At that moment, one of the soldiers searching the rooms appeared from where Jack was sleeping.

The captain walked into the room upon hearing this and glanced at Jack on the bed without saying a word, just waving his hand.

Two soldiers came forward, took some parts from their bodies, then assembled a makeshift stretcher and placed him on it.

Once they finished, the leader waved his hand, and the soldiers who had entered the room exited in the same way they had entered, leaving only the captain, Wanda, and Pietro.

"I'm sorry, kid."

After everyone else left, the captain walked to the door, closed it, and took a pistol out of his leg. He slowly attached a silencer to the gun and aimed it at Wanda.

"Blame yourself for doing something unnecessary!" the Captain said

"Something unnecessary?" Wanda replied

"Saving that person?" Wanda looked up at the gun pointed at her, holding onto Pietro's hand tighter.

She didn't regret saving the person. Blame this damn world instead.

It's just a pity that she hasn't been able to see the day when Sokovia is truly at peace and hasn't even had a chance to eat cake.

Also, she didn't even know the name of the person she saved or what would happen to him.

The Captain hooked his finger on the trigger, slowly pulling it down.

"Click!"

To everyone's surprise, he pulled the trigger, but the gun jammed.

The captain looked at the gun in confusion, shook his head, reloaded it, and aimed it at Wanda again.

Just then...

"Boom!"
