Chapter 27: Conversation
Alex began attending school from the very start of this academic year, which meant he had to introduce himself to the class again. This experience felt somewhat tedious to him.
The female teacher on the stage explained the day's schedule to the students.
In the relatively stable law and order of the 1950s, which contrasted with the prevalence of super villains and crime gangs in the 21st century, Alex had initially intended to attend school as instructed by Howard for a few days and then skip classes to study in the library. However, Charles Xavier's presence was an unexpected surprise.
This interruption forced Alex to listen to the instructor's announcements.
"Alex, what is your ability?" Young Charles lowered his voice and inquired.
"My ability is magnetic control. I also prefer not to have others pry into my thoughts and memories. It's rather unpleasant," Alex replied. He thought it was better to establish communication with the future Professor X.
"I apologize; I was just curious because you feel different from others, and it piqued my curiosity. I didn't intend to read your thoughts," Charles said apologetically.
"That might be because we're both mutants, part of the same kind," Alex chuckled in response.
"That's right," Charles smiled.
"Charles, did you hear what I just said?" Suddenly, the female teacher on the stage called out Charles' name.
"Yes, teacher," the named Charles stood up reluctantly.
"Charles, repeat what I just said," the female teacher instructed, her arms crossed as she looked at Charles.
"Today's lesson plan is to read a book for an hour and a half, write a post-reading article, study probability and statistics, take a test, delve into the history of the United States in the afternoon, and discuss the impact of war on people worldwide. We'll also study biology and dissect frogs, and in fine art class, we'll draw the Statue of Liberty," Alex whispered quietly beside Charles.
Charles immediately shot Alex a thankful glance and promptly recited the teacher's instructions.
The female teacher nodded and allowed Charles to sit down, satisfied that he had paid attention.
"Thank you so much. If it weren't for you, I would have been in trouble with the teacher, and that would have been embarrassing," Charles expressed his gratitude, his face still flushed with relief.
Clearly, Charles had already begun to consider Alex as a good friend.
"You're welcome, anytime," Alex replied with a faint smile. Kids are so easy to win over!
Soon, the morning assembly came to an end, and it was now time for various activities. Students had the option to either play or have breakfast.
"Officially, my name is Charles Xavier. I've never believed that I'm the only... the only one who's different in the world. Now that you're here, we're the same kind," Charles said, extending his hand towards Alex.
"You can call me Alex Stark or simply Alex," Alex replied, shaking Charles' hand with a light chuckle.
Charles, the future Professor X, was just a young and innocent boy at this point.
"Alex Stark? Is your father Howard Stark?," Charles asked curiously.
"Howard Stark is my adoptive father."
"I see."
The two mutants found they had more in common, and their conversation flowed easily. Sitting together, their bond was growing stronger. In the United States, news about Captain America was widespread, and Charles seemed to regard himself as Captain America's biggest fan.
