Chapter 3: 3
His body rocks to the side and his eyes open as the ground rises to meet him. It takes a while to realize you're awake. Above, the fishing net you used as a net swings back and forth. Fresh sea air greets your face as you stand watching the endless waves.
Emma and Heather are sitting in deck chairs a few feet away, laughing, hair blowing in the breeze, their feet over the side of the boat. At the top of a small hut stands Javier, rifle in hand, a dark cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth, and a pair of binoculars in one hand as he lifts to look out over the vast river.
"Rezo, are you okay? Hit the ground really hard," says Emma.
"Try not to break the deck when you hit it," says Heather.
