Chapter 1: Prologue part 1: Life's peaks and valleys

I find myself at the helm of what anyone would call an alien ship, desperately trying to start the damned thing! Why? Because currently I'm in enemy territory and if I get caught, I don't know whether I'll get turned into a trion battery or get brainwashed into becoming one of their solders! At this point dying in combat almost seems preferable. But before I continue in telling about my predicament, I should tell you about how I got into this mess!

Name's Katsuro, Yamata Katsuro and I'm currently 13 years old. For all my life I lived in Mikado city with my family. Fortunately (or rather unfortunately) my father was one of the founding members of Border. They say that good and bad things often come in the same package. My father's calling was one of such things. He'd often go missing from home, sometimes for weeks sometimes for months, but he'd always bring home all sorts of gadgets that looked like they were strait up from a sci fi book. What was the strangest thing about these gadgets was the way they were powered. No batteries or any other conventional form of power. How I found out about this? Well I had enough time to fiddle around with them when my parents were not home. That's how I got a passion about engineering in general. By disassembling and putting things back together.

When I asked my dad about it, that was when I found out about what trion is and what it's used for. In short it's a gland that everyone has in their bodies and that secretes this newly found form of energy. That's also when I found out that my father and a group of his friends created the foundations of what later would become the Border organisation. My life was a good one I think. My parents gave me love and care whenever they were around and when they weren't I had my little hobby to keep me occupied. So all in all I was... happy.

But, all good things must come to an end. 6 years ago my father went on a mission in the Neighborhood and never came back. 2 years later monsters from the Neighborhood invaded my city, and mom followed in my fathers footsteps and died as well. At 7 years I was fatherless, at 9 I became an orphan. The only sliver of good news was that I didn't have to spend the rest of my childhood in an orphanage as I was quickly adopted by a friend of my father, a man named Takumi Rindo. He was the head of the Tamakoma branch and one of the big shots in Border. That in a way made me, unofficially a part of the organisation. With no immediate goal in sight and nothing better to do I decided to study and try to become part of the engineering department of Border.

And lo and behold it was 3 years later when I became a junior engineer at the age of 12. During these 3 years I've also discovered that I had a side effect. Apparently people with high amounts of trion can develop certain powers called side effects. They tend to be unnoticeable and quite minor in nature such as enhancing one's senses or lie detection. Mine I called "overdrive" as it allows me to push some of my organs over their limit (for example i can overclock my brain to think faster or make my muscles contract more and give me short bursts of power). Of course this side effect is not that powerful since it only makes me about 10-20% better and after a few minutes of going into overdrive I get to feel it's side effects, namely localized pain and tiredness. As a junior engineer my main job was to familiarize myself with the Border equipment, by maintaining and customizing it for the agents. The last part of my job gave me quite a lot of new friends from some of the squads, as I was more than happy to spend some of my time tinkering with their equipment. In return they thought me the basics of using a trigger and even showed me some of the more hidden tricks of using them.

Little did I know how useful that would become latter down the road. A few months ago after another invasion from the Neighborhood, the Border executives decided to mount a rescue operation and bring back the people who were kidnapped by the nation of Aftokrator in the Neighborhood. I was given the chance to join the rescue squads due to my high trion levels that would help fuel the ship.

At first I was hesitant to literally jump into the mouth of the beast, but I guess the explorer inside of me wanted to see some of the worlds that brought so many technological marvels to my own, as well as taking away my family. After passing the given trials I joined the Away squads and started my journey in the Neighborhood.

Little did I know that for me, it would be a one way trip...
