Chapter 22: Hilda

Hilda was usually calm and collected. I never quite saw her lose her cool nor did I ever really see much reaction from her.

She was just a simple maid who never quite stood out and I guess that was the point.

Now that I was sitting right across from her, analyzing her every movement it was easy to realize her nervous disposition. But was she truly nervous or was this all just an act?

Looking at her I wasn't sure.

I wasn't sure how her powers worked but from what I understood she could communicate with me through my mind but I didn't think she could read mine so I said,

"You don't like to speak."

Hilda nodded nervously.

"Why?" I asked simply.

Hilda put her hands in from of her face and shook her hand.

"No reason really," I heard her say but I didn't see her lips love this time, her hands covered them.

"Is it because you can't speak or because you won't?" I said simply.

Hilda froze.

This whole time Hilda seemed to not understand what o had truly meant but with this question she stopped. Without even moving her lips a voice echoed in my mind,

"How did you know?"

I shrugged. "You need to practice your lip movements. It's a bit sluggish."

Hilda looked down. Though she didn't saw anything at all. Everything remained completely quiet.

Then, her voice came to my mind once more.

"I'm sorry." She said.

I shook my head. "Why are you apologizing?"

"Most people don't like telepaths..." she said a bit bitterly as she gazed down at her hands with utter disgust, then she raised her eyes to lock with mine. A great sadness was contained in them, and some urgency. She said, "but I promise I've never read your mind. I swear on my bond!"

I nodded. "Don't you ever want to, you know, read someone's mind? Or maybe you can't read minds? I've read that some telepaths have one way communication...."

There was a pause.

"It's not that I can't. I just don't... it's an invasion of privacy. No one likes when I do it so I force myself not to." Hilda said as she tucked her hair behind her ear nervously.

"If I told you it was okay to use your powers, would you?" I asked curiously, sliding towards her.

Hilda paused but then she shook her head no.

Seeing this action, I sighed and then I said, "Okay. I'll respect that decision but I want you to come with me."

"With you where, young miss?" Hilda asked seriously.

"To school of course." I said nonchalantly and then I stood up. "Look Hilda, I'm going to tell you something

Hilda and I arrived at school just as everyone other girl and their one attendant arrived.

Many girls I recognized, some had even been at the ball a while back. I analyzed them all trying to see if I could see Ellie or Ariadne but neither of them were here yet.

For a moment I paused and thought where Ellie would be. I suddenly remembered that Ellie would be meeting her second love interest.

Since this character and I were supposed to never interact due to being in different buildings, It had nothing to do with me whatsoever and so, I ignored this.

Without further thinking, Hilda and I got to getting settled in.

We walked into a nice room, which was designated for me. Looking around, I thought it was nice. Simple but nice.

"Why me?" Hilda said awkwardly as she carried a couple bags into the room. Her voice was loud, as if she was speaking in my ear. Ever since I had confronted her about her ability, It wasn't a big deal for either I or her anymore so she didn't hold back her voice.

I shrugged.

"Even if Loki was here I wouldn't be able to take him with me, so why not you?" I said simply.

Hilda was at a loss for words.

"I'm going to say this once, so listen closely. You can use your abilities with me. It's not a big deal but with others don't use your telepathy. Have them believe you're a mute. It'll be easier for you this way." I said simply.

Hilda nodded.

"You can also, read my mind if you so chose, I really don't care. I pretty much have nothing to hide and since you have a service contract with me, you won't be betraying me even if you wanted to." I said simply. I wanted to be fully transparent with Hilda, she seemed like the kind of person who needed that so I did what was necessary.

Hilda did not say anything about this though. She was quiet, but I could tell her mood had changed slightly.

"Also, whenever you see Ellie, and yes, I'll show you who she is, inform me. No matter what." I said finally, giving her her last order.
