Chapter 94: The Human World

As we step through the magical door, we find ourselves in a long dark alleyway. I look up at the tall buildings surrounding us as the noises of cars and people come crashing down on me. The human world is always so... noisy.

Aston looks both ways down the alley before saying, "It's clear but we need to move. Every time you use magic, the witch hunters will be able to track it." I nod and follow him out of the alley, seamlessly blending in with a crowd of humans walking down a busy street.

The smell of coffee, street food, and other scents assault my nose as we silently move with the crowd. I lean close to Aston and softly say, "I need to use a tracking spell. Once I engage it, we'll need to keep moving."

Aston sighs and asks, "Do you really have no idea where they could be? Even the slightest hunch? That way we can avoid using the tracking spell. I'm not kidding, they're probably already searching for us as we speak."

I weigh my options and say, "Let's get dinner and lay low for a bit. I need to think." He nods and says, "We need to go somewhere really crowded." As soon as he says that, we come up to a busy restaurant and bar. We glance at each other before nodding and walking in.

We don't have to wait long before we're seated. As soon as we place our orders, I lean back with a sigh. Aston keeps looking around the place like he's expecting someone to pounce on us at any moment but even if they were here and were able to pinpoint who we were, they wouldn't be able to make a move with so many others here.

I roll my eyes and say, "Relax, it's fine." He bares his teeth at me and says, "Don't tell me to relax. My job is to keep you safe, that's it."

Charming, real charming.

Here's the thing, Guardians are actually born from Witches. They just can't use magic. On the other hand, they're faster, stronger, and even magic resistant. Effectively making them the perfect bodyguards for Witches.

Once we get our food, we both eat in silence. I pick at my food, not used to the greasy food after being in the other world for so long. Aston inhales his food, making me wonder if he even chewed it. The whole time I try and think of where Aiya's parents may be or where they would have run to but no matter how hard I try, I can't come up with anything.

If I had to guess, they've paid someone off and are safely hiding. It would take months maybe even years to physically track that information down. I don't have that kind of time. I look up to Aston and softly say, "You aren't going to like it, but I have to use the tracking spell."

He curses under his breath and says, "See, this is what's wrong with you Witches. You think Magic can solve everything and quickly turn to it without even trying." My eyebrows shoot up as I look at him with a sarcastic smirk.

Someone has a chip on their shoulder...

I tilt my head a little as I say, "While what you say may be true in most cases, I really have no other options. If I were to physically track them down, it would take too long. Without a lead, I'm left with nothing but my magic. If you have a problem with that, you can leave now. This isn't my first time in the human world."

He narrows his green eyes on me and says, "I've heard of you, Lyra Alarie. I hear you're some kind of super Witch but let me warn you. You are nothing but prey here in the human world. The Witch hunters will stop at nothing to hunt you down, steal your magic, and kill you. The Werewolves can smell you a mile away and will rip you to shreds. After all, it's said the only reason they're cursed in the first place is because of Witches. And last but not least, you have the Vampires. Not only can they pinpoint you in a room of thousands, but they will also use you as their own personal juice box. They love the blood of Witches more than anything else."

I tap my finger on the table as I silently listen to all the things I already know. I nod, looking around the busy restaurant and saying, "You tell me what I already know." I slowly lean in, making him uneasy. When I'm close enough, I softly say, "We already have company."

Aston's entire body tenses up as he stares at me and asks, "Where, how many?" I give him a smile as I say, "As luck would have it, three Vampires. Judging by the feel of things, one of them is well over a century old while the other two seem around half a century."

Aston's face visibly whitens as he curses. He tries not to look around and make it obvious as he whispers, "Could they have followed us here? I didn't sense anyone tailing us." I lean back and sigh as I say, "No, I think they were here before we walked in."

As soon as I say this, a man in all black appears before us and says, "The Witch is right, you walked in about an hour after we got here." Aston quickly reaches for something, but the Vampire says, "Ah, I wouldn't do that Guardian. My boss just wants to talk with the little Witch here."

I sigh, knowing that things were quickly becoming messy, but I nod and say, "If he just wants to talk, sure. Lead the way." Aston turns to me and yells, "Have you lost your damn mind!?" I roll my eyes at him and say, "You can stay here or come with me, your choice."

He looks utterly taken back as I slowly stand. He quickly stands up and says, "Of course I'm coming! I promised Vanir that I'd keep you safe. If I had known you had a death wish, I would have never agreed to this shit!"

I give him a dry look as I say, "You're welcome to return at any time. I only agreed to you coming because Vanir begged me to take you." I turn to the Vampire and lift my arm, signaling him to go. The Vampire seems amused by our bickering, but he doesn't say anything.

We follow him all the way to the back and to a private room. Even though they were private rooms, there were no doors. When I step into the room, I'm greeted by another Vampire standing by the door but when I look at the Vampire sitting at the table, I know he's the "boss" the other guy was referring to.

To be honest, not all vampires are attractive. Just because you turn into a Vampire, doesn't mean you automatically become attractive. You have to be attractive in the first place. The other two Vamps were pretty average but the one sitting at the table looked like a dark fallen angel.

Yeah... I had a thing for bad boys.
