Chapter 5: Wolves' Siege

Today was a particularly snowy day. Every person I came across wore many layers of clothing, covering their whole body. Everyone was like portable trains with steam coming from their mouth with each breath of air. All the chimneys around the town were in full motion, leaving behind smoke trails towards the sky.

I ate my breakfast as usual and went outside with my staff in hand. My getup was the exact usual of what the original Rudeus wore. Since I have the memories, it's as If I had always worn it. So, I didn't find anything uncomfortable with the clothing. Of course, the little modification I did was another matter altogether.

"It's really cold." I couldn't help but comment on the situation. I never really liked cold that much. That's not to say I dislike it, but I would choose a warmer climate over a cold one any day of the year. Nothing can beat the feeling when you get after you drink a cold beverage on a sunny day.

"Folks going' to Northern region pack your things. We are moving out in an hour." An old man with a rein in his hand shouted for all to hear. The large scar on his face attested to his experience as an adventurer.

"Finally," My whole body was filled up to the brim with untold excitement. Truth be told, the boredom of staying in one place was getting to me.

These days I had been visiting establishments in the town and searching for any and all information I could find. Apparently, the Fittoa region I've been in was one of the most peaceful places in the Asura kingdom due to the lack of any serious threat from the monsters and its overall climate.

I have to agree. During all the years I've lived there, no danger has ever come to me. I'm strictly talking about the monsters of course. Otherwise, it had its fair share of ruffians.

As for my communications skills…Well, no luck there. I still found it hard to keep a conversation going. All the talks I had were over in 2-3 minutes. I think that is an improvement considering that at first, I couldn't even talk without being creepy on some level.

I walked up to the caravan and got on the last carriage. It had a very distinctive smell. Kind of smell you get when a leather parchment gets wet. For what it's worth, I didn't dislike it. Rather I found it quite pleasing.

"Good day my fellow travelers," I said as I got onboard.

2 men were sitting at the front of the carriage. They looked at me and gave me a look of acknowledgment and went back to what I believe was their game. They kept rolling die at each of their turns which sometimes escalated into arguments which were usually followed by a money exchange.

I found their interactions quite amusing. Well, at least up until I got bored of it and decided to take a little half-nap.

"Omega, what's my effective range now?" I whispered under my breath.

[The effective range as of now is 10 meters.]

Hmm… At least it's not a single digit anymore. Oh, how much I had to suffer.

"We are departing, make sure to get everything cuz we ain't turning back" I heard a person shout from the front. If I had to guess, maybe it was the caravan master.

With that command, many people checked caravans while looking at a list of items. I heard murmurs of their voices counting and confirming items followed by clattering noises of what I believe to be glass.

They were quite efficient since the check didn't even last for 5 minutes. I think the caravan master overseeing the process made them work more hastily.

Rosenburg… Here I come!

"Shit," I said, looking at the pack of wolves who surrounded the caravan.

Was I afraid? Hell, no… Are you kidding me?

Annoyed? Hell, yes.

Just a few minutes ago I was getting the best sleep I had ever. It was like that until it was rudely interrupted by a pack of wolves.

Now you may wonder how I can just sleep carelessly. That's simple... I had commanded Omega to notify me in any case of danger. It gave me a piece of mind. Believe me, it gets tiring when you have to keep your eyes on the surroundings at all times.

"Grr" I turned my head around to see a wolf pouncing at me. Its teeth were razor-sharp and looked quite intimidating.

"Fuck off" I fired a charged stone cannon at the wolf, popping its head like a balloon. It was quite entertaining to see the wolf's expression change from ferocity to despair at the last moment.

"Woah…" I heard several gasps from the people beside me. They had a hint of fear in their eyes when they looked at me.

"I'll take care of it."

I jumped out outside, keeping my eyes fixed on the wolves. Looking around, I saw many people fighting with wolves while some were running. It was total and utter chaos. There weren't any casualties yet but we were at a disadvantage due to their numbers.

Here goes nothing.

I extended my arm and conjured a thick set of needles using my system. It was the perfect killing tool I've designed to take care of someone without making much of a mess. Also, another plus point was it being very discreet.

I fired needles one by one with each needle getting replaced by another.

*Puchi* *Puchi* *Puchi*

Wolves started dropping like flies under my barrage of needles. Most people didn't even notice anything considering how fast the needles were. The only thing they could see was gaping holes in the heads of wolves.

"It's more effective than I thought," I said looking at the initial predators running like some pigs going to be slaughtered. The surroundings were painted with red color. The ice soaked with blood looked like some kind of blood crystal.

"Thank you, young man." The caravan master came forward and grabbed my hand. His hands held a rough texture, a stark contrast to mine. "I wouldn't know what to do without your help"

"Some compensation would be great," I said in one breath. He let out a nervous chuckle.

Well, I am not asking for much am I? Everything needs some kind of compensation. Right?

Did he think that I would be a good Samaritan and say 'Ah, no problem... Don't worry about it?'

The crowd surrounding erupted into a burst of relieved laughter after finally registering they had survived. I think my serious, yet comical answer gave them the final push needed to relax.

"Of course… Of course…" He nodded his head vigorously and handed me a pouch. I could hear the clanging sound of coins inside it.

After checking the continents, I gave him an acknowledging nod and went back to my carriage. It was a tad bit uncomfortable with everyone looking at me like some kind of monster. I mean I know that they don't mean me no harm. Still, it doesn't mean that I'm fine with it.

On the other hand, I guess I should get used to this. This is only the beginning. If I'm getting this much attention from the needles, I created to be discreet I don't know what would happen in a scenario where I use a flashier one like a fireball.

Yelp! I'll just go back to sleep. You all can look as much as you want.
