Chapter 1: The Beginning

Another year had passed, and Leo was the same. All of his friends started to awake, but that didn't happen to him. He was only a frail boy in a world where the strong ruled.

Mana, as the humans called it, was a particle that mysteriously appeared on Earth; dungeons followed soon after, and beasts started to roam. Humanity thought it was the end, but the mana mutated both beast and man. Unique abilities were granted to those with a certain gene. Most of humanity had these abilities, only a few percentages of the population were unable to have one— Leo was one of these people.

He saw how all of his classmates started to awaken their abilities, leaving the normal school, aiming to enter specialized schools for those with powers. But he was left behind, alone. It didn't feel fair. He hated how things were going in his life.

"Why am I like this?" Leo thought as he watched the fireworks exploding in the sky. The hatred he felt within was immense, and something strange happened.

Leo didn't understand what was happening. A strange voice echoed inside his head, and some messages appeared in front of his eyes. He felt delighted at the thought of awakening an ability. That was the only explanation after all.

[Hello, Leo. I'm here to grant you the power that you wished.]

This voice was talking to him inside his head, and he wondered if he had got crazy or something.

"Who are you? What do you want?" Leo thought.

[You can call me the Demon Lord System. I'm here to grant you what you want. Power. But to do so you'll have to perform some deeds for me.] the voice got creepier and creepier after every word, as it was indeed a demon talking inside his head.

"What deeds?" Leo asked, and a message popped up in front of his eyes.

[New quest acquired]

[Start a fight with someone without reason]

[Rewards: 10 Experience Points]

"What?" Leo was surprised. This system didn't make sense. It looked like some quests from the MMORPGs he played, but the quests were inclined towards the bad guy path.

"May I ask what can I do with these Experience Points?" Leo already had guessed what these were for, but he wanted to make sure.

[Name: Leo] [Race: Half-demon]

[Level: 1(0/50)]

[Stats:]

[Strength: 3]

[Agility: 2]

[Endurance: 5]

[Wisdom: 3]

[Free stats: 0]

[You can level up to earn more stats and improve your body. Some other abilities can also be unlocked while leveling up, while others are scattered around the globe.]

It was a lot of information to take in. Leo was happy because now he had an ability. He wouldn't be left behind. But on the other hand, this system made him do bad things. Starting a fight was something minor, but Leo wondered what the system would ask as his level progresses.

Another thing that puzzled him was the half-demon race that showed in his stats. Leo was certain that both of his parents were humans. Were they? Could he possibly be adopted?

Leo continued watching the fireworks, thinking about what he should do next. Being the villain wasn't something he had even considered. But no way he would continue being someone useless in this world.

"Screw this. If destiny wants me to be the villain, so be it," Leo got up and left his house's balcony. Everyone was enjoying the passage of the year, so finding someone drunk wasn't a difficult task. The first quest the system gave him was to start up a fight with someone, and that was exactly what he intended to do.

Walking down the streets. People were yelling, and drinking as the world would end the next day. The irony of the destiny, Leo found someone who he wished to beat up since two weeks ago.

"That bastard is here."

The middle-aged man was someone who had disrespected his family. Leos family owned a small shop in the neighborhood, and that man had caused troubles there. Leo didn't do a thing before as he couldn't. But having this system that would make him stronger for kicking the man's ass, why shouldn't he do it.

"Oh, it's you, Leo. Long time no see." the middle-aged man held a beer, and smiled as soon as he spotted Leo.

Not waiting for the man to have a chance, Leo punched the man in the face. It was a clean strike, breaking the man's nose. Leo was surprised to see the power of his blow.

The system had already made him stronger. His stats were low, as he was only level 1, but still, he was far stronger than before.

Everyone screamed after seeing what had happened. But after some time, they didn't mind.

They were all drunk, and two people fighting was a normal occasion. The man just stood there on the ground, motionless. Having his nose devasted like that, along with all the drinking, he couldn't even stand.

[Quest completed]

[+10 Experience Points]

Two messages appeared in front of Leo's eyes, and he was smiling after reading them. He imagined that the next quest would appear right after, but it didn't.

[Quests are random, it could have more than one in a day or a couple of days without them. But each subsequent quest will grant you more Experience Points.]

The system answered Leo's doubt, as it was practically reading his thoughts.

Leo checked once again his stats, just to see if the Experience Points had changed.

[Name: Leo] [Race: Half-demon]

[Level: 1(10/50)]

[Stats:]

[Strength: 3]

[Agility: 2]

[Endurance: 5]

[Wisdom: 3]

[Free stats: 0]

"Nice. 40 points to go for my level 2."

Leo went back to his house, thinking of how he would tell his family that he had now an ability. And he was also thinking of attending the battle academy test that would occur in two weeks.

"All of my friends are going there. I should also. They want to become heroes who fight against the monsters and wipe out the dungeons. Screw that, I'll be the villain staying in their ways."
