Chapter 9: 9

Hazel's POV

I've been successfully ignoring Sam for a week now. I feel so proud of myself for being able to ignore him. I know it's killing him internally because when we carpool to school, he usually tries to start up a conversation but I'll just plug in my earphones and bury my face in my phone giving him the “i-don't-want-to-talk-to-you” vibe. He ends up gritting his teeth and griping the steering wheel so tight that his knuckles turn white. If I'm able to go through today, which is Friday, without talking to him, it'll be a new record.

Walking outside, I stop dead in my tracks when I hear a familiar voice call my name “Hazel, wait up”. I turned to see Stacey panting, trying to steady her breathing.

“Oh, hey Stacey. What's up?” I said casually trying so hard not to laugh at her current situation.

“Just wanted to ask if we're still on for tomorrow” she said after recovering. We were planning to checkout a restaurant that just opened a week ago. It's called 'Hungry Hangout' .... I know. It's a weird name for a restaurant but rumor has it that they have the best lasagna known to man. So, Stacey and I want to know if it's true or not.

“Sure, I won't miss it” I replied.

“Okay, I'll pick you up at 12:30 sharp and wear something casual” she said as she left the school building with me closely behind.

To say the car ride home was awkward would be an understatement. It was suffocating to sit without doing anything because I was too lazy to charge my phone last night, so I couldn't listen to music while in the car. Which meant I couldn't block out any of Sam's attempt to start a conversation.

Immediately we arrived at his front porch, I stepped out of the car and made my to the door.

“Hazel! Please wait”

I pretended to not hear a thing and kept walking. Before I could open the door, he grabbed my wrist.

“Please I just want to talk to you” I looked into his eyes searching for any hint of pretence but I found nothing.

“Oh! So you're ready to talk, right?” I said, “Then let's talk”. He was pissing me off because all the time I was ready to talk to him, he wouldn't listen.

I took a deep breath to reduce my anger, “What did I ever do you that made you hate me so much?” I don't care if I sound desperate. At this point, I just want to know what went wrong.

“When the time comes you will know”

“But I want to know now. Your hatred is killing me more than you know it”

“I don't hate you, princess”. He said, stepping closer to me with a smirk on his face.

“Then why were you avoiding —” before I could finish my sentence, his lips crashed on mine leaving me shocked. It took me a couple of seconds to recover myself, I wanted to push him off but the kiss was making me rethink. So instead of pushing him off, I did the opposite. I grabbed him by his collar to deepen the kiss. The action made him smile through the kiss and wrap his arms around my waist to keep me as close as possible.

I knew that I'll regret everything after this kiss ends, but I wasn't thinking straight. My stomach was going into a frenzy because of what was happening. Before I could get used to the feeling of Sam's lips on mine, he pulled away and looked at me with an intensity I've never seen before.

He quickly recovered and gave me a loop-sided grin, then said “That means I've been forgiven, right?” before walking into the house.

I was beyond confused. Forgiven for what exactly?
