Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Bookstore 2

Brian was happy to finally see someone he cared about besides Prue. Marcus stayed by the door while Brina walked over to Claire. Claire was your average 40-year-old. She had greyish blonde hair that was up in a bun, she also had light blue eyes. She always wore floral, even when Prue and Brian were kids. Claire stretched out her arms and hugged the both of them. Marcus watched from the side. Seeing a happy family brought him joy. He smiled and glanced at Prue. Prue had tears of joy and a bright smile. Claire suddenly noticed Marcus.

"Who is that?" Claire asked.

Claire kinda shoved Prue and Brian to the side and walked to Marcus. She lifted his face and checked his teeth, hair, skin, and everything else you need to be a 'perfect' boy, which he was. His hair was light brown making him look innocent, his eyes were dark blue making him look like a young model. Claire put on a dreamy smile and suddenly had an idea.

"You look like Prue's boyfriend!" Claire said innocently.

The second those words reached Prue and Marcus's ears, they looked away.

Poof!

Claire was holding Marcus's shoulder facing him towards Prue so they could still see each other.

"No, we're not," Marcus said awkwardly.

The room went silent awkwardly. Suddenly Brian began laughing a lot. Prue glared at him with a hot red face, same with Marcus.

"Ok kids, anyway, why did you come?" Claire asked laughing.

The three of them looked at each other and were silent. Brian took a step and cleared his throat and carefully explained their situation. This was the first time Marcus would be hearing in on their lives. The three of them sat at the small round table in the corner. Brian sat by Claire and Prue and Marcus sat next to each other. The four of them were silent until Brina finally broke the silence.

"Father was taken away, finally. Prue and I live alone and we plan on taking care of ourselves, but we need jobs. I have a small job as a trainee vet, but Prue needs one, oh, and so does Marcus." Brian said looking down.

Marcus nor Claire knew that they were abused but they could tell their situation was complicated. Prue was clenching her fists on the table. She had a glare on her face as she closed her eyes and faced the window next to them. Marcus could tell by Prue's look and Brian's voice that they went through some rough stuff.

"Well, you always welcome to work here, but I don't know if I can pay you what you need," Claire said in a sad voice.

Marcus was only just meeting these people but already felt like he had known them for years. Suddenly Brian got up with a sudden cheerful look on his face.

"It okay! Prue will work for free!" Brian cheerfully stated.

Prue suddenly looked up surprised, as did Claire and Marcus. What did he say? They need the money, working for free would be a bit of a stretch. Prue then put on a small smile.

"Are you sure?" Claire said looking to Prue concerned.

"Yea, I can find another part-time job somewhere else. I need to be here to remind me of her." Prue said smiling calmly and looking down.

Marcus looked at her as a blush crept into his cheeks. The look on her face slowly lit him up like a candle waiting for the flame to reach its wick. Now, after all this time, there was a small light in his world.
