Chapter 9: CAREER TALK
Mark and his daughter got home late that day due to making enquires about the female hostel where he met the caretaker
"The price for a double room per person is $7,470 which is equal to $1,867.50 per quarter" The caretaker said
"She will have roommates right?" Mark asked
"Yes, three in each room" The caretaker replied
"That's nice, we will take the double room" Mark said, the caretaker told him how to pay for the room and they signed necessary paperwork after payment was confirmed.

Geraldine had made dinner for them before they were back, she made them settle before they talk about their day.
"How was today?" Geraldine asked excitedly
"Good but we found out that man we met on Friday probably edited my name off the list of the scholarship students" Valeria replied after drinking a cup of water
"That's bad, why would he do that?" Geraldine said feeling bad
"His conscience will judge him mother" Valeria replied not wanting to think about what might have happened if she didn't have her scholarship letter with her
"We also made enquiry on accommodation, luckily for us the woman that attended to us today helped us" Mark said after filling his stomach with food
"So nice of her. So will she be staying off campus?" Geraldine asked as she and her husband haven't discussed about it yet
"Exactly what I thought Mother. Why can't I go to school from here?" Valeria replied still not feeling happy they paid for accommodation
"You need to read in a comfortable environment Valeria, it helps in assimilating" Mark said coldly
"Your father is right dear. So have you seen somewhere for her to stay?" Geraldine asked
"Yes, he paid over seven thousand dollar for a so called female hostel" Valeria replied still not getting why he had to pay much, she saw her mother gasp and she knew the money isn't part of budget.
"We will discuss this later Geraldine" Mark said and his wife understood him.
"I will be going for a career talk tomorrow, the woman in school gave me the flyer" Valeria said clearing the thick atmosphere
"Oh that's nice. Where's the location?" Geraldine asked
"Mandel Hall" Valeria replied reading the flyer
"Where is that?" Geraldine asked
"Inside the campus" Valeria replied
"Do you have any official wears here?" Geraldine asked
"Yes, I do" Valeria replied not wanting them to spend any more penny on her
"I will press it tomorrow before you leave" Geraldine said and Valeria nods her head
The dinner became awkward again and they all retire to sleep. The next morning, Valeria woke up very early not wanting to sit at the back, she bathed, press her cloth then wake her parents up. Her mother prepare a fast breakfast for her and her father, after the father was dressed, they left the house. Valeria stopped at the university gate while her father went to work. She entered the magnificent hall that was maturely decorated and pictures of the host, co-host, speakers and other important guest were around the hall. She walk magnificently to the front sit meant for attendees and sat there with the guest tag she was given earlier.
An hour later, the hall was filled, all the special guests were sitted after the ushers show them a seat specially made for them, the event started fully with the host appreciating everyone's presence especially the special guests. The speakers were invited to speak for an hour till it came down to the lady who will talk about the real topic as others have been talking about their experiences as a biological scientist. The lady who should be in her late twenties walk up to the microphone provided smiling, she's the special guest and speaker of the day.
"Good afternoon everyone" She greeted smiling and everyone greeted back
"Right here before you is Barrister Miss Esmeralda Jason, the career lady as I am fondly called" She introduced smiling
"Why am I called the career lady? Questions on most of you mind, I am a Biotechnologist, Genetic Counselor, Health communication specialist, Medical malpractice Attorney, Farm manager, Naturalist, Biologist and Financial analyst" She said and everyone roared
"Decorum please" She said and everyone kept quiet
"The fun part of this is I did not go to school to get a degree for each of this; I have a degree in biological science and all I did was go for extra courses and special trainings. I almost forgot I have a part-time job being a medical sales representative and a physical therapy assistant" She added and the hall became noisy again. Valeria was jotting down her careers and was surprised to know she only has a degree in Biological Science
"And this is to tell you that there are numerous career opportunities in Biological science. So now what is Biological Science?" She said and numerous people raise their hand including Valeria, she picked the girl next to Valeria.
"Biological science is a study intended for science students who wish to progress with biology coursework or a combination of science disciplines" The girl said and Esmeralda nod feeling satisfied with the definition
"Nice definition! A biological science field is suitable for individuals planning for a future that focuses on biological topics, which is what I have done. This biological topics include pharmaceuticals, science journalism, medical research, biological supply industries, museums or science libraries.This brings me to telling you about my next career as an environmental engineer" Esmeralda said and everyone clap.
"Thank you. Completing a biological science major can help you fulfill the fundamental requirements of admission to various jobs, including at health professional schools, dental clinics and in the medical sector. And I'm a living example of this" Esmeralda said and the audience clapped once again
"Now let's move to the career itself. As a biological science major students you can be a Biotechnologist, biochemist, genetic counselor, health communication specialist, health educator, medical sales representative, nurse practitioner, health service manager, Medical Attorney, financial analyst, radiology technologist, farm manager, forester, biologist, environmental engineer, professor/teacher or a research scientist." She said and the audience clap again
"Thank you, now let me move to the question in your mind, how can you be an attorney without studying law? Who can answer that?" She said and only Valeria hand was raised so she picked her
"In my own opinion, most biology majors can excel in different law fields that require scientific reasoning and knowledge. Intellectual and patent property lawyers have to understand the applicable science behind medical instruments, drugs and biotechnology products to process patent applications and plot their clients' defense against infringements. Environmental attorneys can contest and support environmental policies and projects based on understanding how they can impact the ecosystem. Medical malpractice attorneys require advanced scientific knowledge to determine whether health professionals have acted ethically and analyzed medical interventions. And that's why there's a major in medical law and to be an attorney you must study law or have masters degree in law" Valeria explained and Esmeralda looked at her with passion
"What's your name dear?" Esmeralda asked
"Melvin Valeria Grace ma'am" Valeria replied
"You are grace indeed. Valeria I'm really impressed with your response, thank you" Esmeralda said and Valeria smile
"Thank you ma'am" Valeria replied smiling sweetly
"Exactly what Valeria said, as I have said earlier I only have a biological science degree, to become an attorney I did medical law as my minor and other special law training. I became an attorney late last year when I turned twenty-five" Esmeralda said and everyone gasp at her age.
"So if there's anyone telling you not to study biological science then let them know you are the career ones. Any question?" Esmeralda added and most people raise their hand, she looked at her wristwatch
"I have only five more minutes so I will be answering only one question but you can go to thecareerlady@ask.com, drop your questions there and I will find a time in my tight schedule to respond" Esmeralda said and she pointed at a man at the back to ask his question.
"Having many career opportunities is not the deal, the deal here is how to get a job and a good pay. So how do we get a job in any of this career and a good pay?" The man asked and Esmeralda smile
"It should be known by now that medical fields get a good pay as well as law field and teaching field. Your degree is an addition to how you get paid, I forgot to tell you I'm a First Class student and the best graduating student of my set, this gave me additional opportunity to get paid higher. My per time job as a medical sales representative I earn more than seventy thousand dollar per year and as a physical therapy assistant I earn approximately a hundred thousand dollar per year. Those are my part-time jobs, they pay me higher because I have knowledge and a degree" Esmeralda replied and everyone clap
"That is that about career in biological science, have you chosen your career yet? Or do you need help choosing one then don't forget to send a mail to thecareerlady@ask" Esmeralda said and the audience clapped for her as she walk back to her seat. The programme ended with appreciation from the co-host. Valeria who was determined to meet Esmeralda waited behind.
"Excuse me Miss Esmeralda" She said and Esmeralda looked back at her
"Oh Valeria" Esmeralda said recognising her immediately.
"Yes ma'am, I'm really inspired and wish to be like one day" Valeria said smiling
"And I wish I was as smart as you when I was younger" Esmeralda said making Valeria blush
"Are you a student here?" Esmeralda asked
"Soon ma'am, I'm still processing my admission as a scholarship student" Valeria replied
"Wow! That's nice" Esmeralda said
"Anyways, this is my personal number if you have any issues be it school or relationship then beep me" Esmeralda added looking at Valeria fondly
"Thank you ma'am" Valeria said happily collecting the card
"Have a nice day" Esmeralda said and leave. Valeria was very happy and she went back to her father's house all smiling and in a good mood.
