Chapter 2: Chapter 1

May 1978

Jocelyn Preston.

Push push, I can see the baby the nurse exclaimed excitedly It was the year 1978 at the Riverside Health Center in Virginia where Jocelyn was in labor.

Tears are often a feature of labor, brought about by either pain or just pure joy, for Jocelyn it was sadness with a bit of relief.

The worst nine months of her life was about to be over, maybe things can go back to the way they were before the unexpected pregnancy, she hoped but hope is a dangerous thing to have because just like that, everything could come crashing down.

Jocelyn kept on screaming while trying to push hard as she could, soon after, the soft cries of a baby filled the room Its a girl, the nurse told Jocelyn as she handed her over to Jocelyn, she stared at the human she had just made and for a moment she was lost in her eyes, love at first was very real at that moment and everything she had been through in the past few months started to fill worth it.

She began groaning once more. Youre having twins, the nurse said. Having one baby at eighteen was bad enough but two!, Dad is going to kill me, the only reason he didnt throw me out of the house is because Khalil my deadbeat of a boyfriend skipped town after I informed him of my pregnancy.

She was quickly pulled out of her own head as she shrieked one last time and gave birth to the second baby, it was a boy.

The nurse headed over to the waiting area where Jocelyns father had been pacing impatiently around.

He works at the hospital but he was done with his shift to break the news to him, Mr Preston Congratulations, your daughter gave birth to twins,

There wasn't much celebration from him, just a disappointed scowl on his face. Mr Preston was not educated, he washed toilets in the hospital for a living to provide for himself and his daughter while also struggling to pay his wifes hospital bill, she had cancer and not very long to live.

He couldn't afford to feed two more mouths, he hardly ate himself, sending his daughter to school so she could be better than him was his priority but she disappointed, broke his heart by getting pregnant

Creak

The door of Jocelyns ward was being opened, it was her father, and He was finally making an appearance several hours after she gave birth. He walked into her ward, staring at the babies next to her not saying anything for a couple minutes.

"You're giving them up", he finally said. She had always been aware of her fathers plan but she had hoped when he saw the babies, he would fall in love with them and he would change his mind but again hope is a dangerous thing to have, it could break you.

She was speechless after he said that, almost instantly numb to feeling but that didnt stop the tears from overrunning her face.

Mr Preston, the nurse barged into the ward yelling, its your wife ending the unbearable silence. As Mr Preston and the nurse raced over to his wifes ward, he had to stop a couple times because the nurse sprinted like she ran track in high school.

They finally got to her room but they were too late, Mrs Preston heart had stopped and she was gone.

Seeing his dead wife and eighteen year old daughter who had just had given birth to twin babies was too much for Mr Preston who had been struggling with high blood pressure for years now.

His daughter broke his heart then his wifes death stopped it. He had a heart attack, passed out and subsequently pronounced dead by the doctors who were called to attend to him.

Jocelyn unaware of events that had just occurred was in her room with her babies in her arms. Ill call you Zoe, after your late grandmother and Ill call you Zander, after my favorite male movie character, remembering him she smiled a little, a rare smile after months of misery and sadness for Jocelyn with more to follow, after dropping out of school because she was tired of people staring at her obvious pregnancy, she was shunned by her peers pretty much isolated even at home, her father barely looked at her and her mother was sick and dying so she had no one to talk to, but she was mentally strong even though she was obviously depressed about her situation and suicidal thoughts did cross her mind from time to time but she was on anti-depressants, it helped with her anxiety issues.

The door of her ward was opened slowing and it was the nurse walking into her room, she had her head down obviously trying to hide her grieve but Jocelyn could see through that.

"Where's my father?, Did something happened with my mum?", with all these questions in quick succession, the nurse didn't know which to answer first because they seemingly met the same fate and she was the unlucky person who was to deliver the worst kind of news, of loss, of not just one but two parents, it was unspeakable and the nurse is speechless thinking of the best way to break the news of the tragedy that just happened to her parents, her facial expressions said it all and Jocelyn could guess it herself but it was worse that she could have imagined. She had lost everything that day.
