Chapter 56: visibly furious
Zaccai said nothing to crown for the next few days. Mostly because she spared him no time to do so. She had refused to come down to breakfast with him and she had dinner earlier than he did now. He wondered how long they would live like that.
Crown wondered how her family were doing and hoped they would forgive her for what she was yet to do. She discovered her only role at present was to be a good wife to Zaccai and bare his children. She hated that. All she could think about was how her days were numbered, so on her life she was going to try to escape again and this time she was going to do so right. Ashford wasn't in the stars for her any longer. She was going to find one of the new settlements humans occupied and live among them.
That way she was going to be safe and so will all of Ashford.
Days went by fast and soon it was now two weeks since her first attempt. It was way past midnight one day when she rose up from her bed, and walked to her window. She wore a black simple dress gown, to appear rather inconspicuous. A long make shift rope hung all the way down, she tied it to her bedpost and secured it before climbing down.
Crown got to the ground after a while, happy to feel the earth steady under her feet. She found the small gap in the wall she had discovered and went through it. She was now outside of Tahu, surrounded by darkness and quiet. Without stopping, she kept moving, not entirely sure of where she was going to go.
She found herself at the edge of the forest that held a certain memory for her. A bad one. Because she had taken the sweet Miss Neoma had gifted her earlier and trusted her words she confidently entered into the forest and into the unknown. Afraid to still draw attention to herself, crown relied on the moonlight to light her path.
She had moved a good distance when she heard the sound of something. Making the choice to not head towards the sound, Crown quietly backed away and picked up the pace.
But whatever it was could now smell her, and now it's eyes were fixed on her back. It was a werewolf. It had been devouring a bush pig when she showed up. Now she was all it wanted, driven by the curse that plagued it's existence.
It trailed her from the shadows and soon cut her off in her path.
Crown screamed when it appeared. Here she was trying to escape the very creature she was married to and yet one of his kind was in her way. She had to be cursed. "Get away from me!" She yelled, pulling out a short stick with an arrow head and wielding it.
It growled as it started to pace around her.
"I know you don't wish to do this, deep down you may want to let me go but you can't because of the curse." She followed its move, making sure her back was never to it. "Try to fight that urge and please let me go."
It growled loudly and howled as it prepared to attack her.
Crown backed away and started to run but she knew she could never outrun a werewolf and without stopping in her tracks she turned towards it with the weapon she held, slashing it's throat.
The creature fell to the ground and Crown took that moment to run even faster.
Moments later, she heard the sound of it following her again. It was now a race to the death.
Crown tripped and fell, cutting her shoulder and tearing her dress on a broken branch but that didn't stop her. She was up on her feet almost immediately, still keeping at it. The creature grew tired of the chase then when it jumped a few trees and landed on her front.
Crown fell backwards. "No! Get away from me, someone help!" She screamed, covering her face with her hands not wanting to see whatever happened next. It tried to touch her but was pushed back by a force neither of them could see.
A loud growl sounded in her ears, and within moments another werewolf showed up. Far bigger than the one who had been on her trail. His fur reminded her of Zaccai.
Confusion and frustration swept over her as it seemed the one that just arrived was there to protect her. And when he buried his claws deep in the heart of the former and tore his heart out, she had her answer. Crown watched with fear in her eyes, never had she experienced such brutality in her life and now that image was going to live with her forever. The creature, now dead shifted back into a man, one she didn't know but that didn't make his death now less hurtful. It was her fault he was dead.
Tears was starting to roll down her eyes but that feeling was short lived as the new werewolf turned its gaze on her. She saw only one of its eyes glowed.
She hurriedly got to her feet and weakly held her weapon in front of her. "Get away from me you monster! Don't come any closer!" Her words worked and repelled him back into the shadows but as quickly as he had appeared, he came back out in his human form. It was Zaccai. It didn't matter what time of day it was, Zaccai was always godly handsome even with blood covering his hand and spalshed across his face.
He was visibly furious and there were now so many reasons for him to be. She had tried to escape again, he had killed one of his kind for her, and...she was bleeding from an injury.
Crown stood her ground, her eyes filled with defiance and unshed tears.
"I just killed one of my own, for you." His anger rode on every word. He walked towards her. "I told you, rather kindly never to leave again." He looked down at her. "You deserve all that comes next." His words left a certain tension in the air.
Unwilling to accept that she failed horribly at leaving him again, she said blithely. "I do not care what comes next." That was the truth, she felt doomed either way.
Crown was still afraid of nothing and even when she feared, she stood her ground.
