Chapter 2: Chapter two

The first and second world war created a big impact on modernity. To understand the absurdity of man it gave the world a new understanding of man; man as an irrational being. Prior to that, man was thought as rational or sensitive. Sigmund Freud calls it the death of instinct; the element of irrationality; everyman has this element.

It's being one month since he got married and four months since he made what he considered the highest error of his life. In his office seated on an executive chair is Obi lingering on a page of a brochure presented to him by his secretary to review for more than an hour now. He couldn't stop reminiscing on that night when everything went sour.

He had felt the guilt as he saw the blood smeared on his bedsheet even as Ifeoma got up saying they were two adults maintaining: "it was just sex and it's was concensual." That didn't stop the heavy guilt he felt towards her, towards his wife Lucy, towards everything.

Obi had thought he could pretend to live with the guilt which he almost did until the tsuendo broke out some weeks later. "I'm pregnant" Ifeoma had said. For close to five minutes he had being dumbfounded, the only sound visible to his hear were the tick dong of the wall clock hung above the wedding picture of his wife Lucy. As if to remind him what he had lost and how incapable he was. Fate has really made him look like a wuss in the eyes of world.

He had said he would take responsibility on that day even thou he didn't know responsibility for what exactly. But fate decided to play a fast one one him ; given him a tangible responsibility to take care of.

"I understand if you wouldn't want the child, I just thought you had the right to know" she said anxiety in her voice. He didn't blame her for thinking him a coward; not like that would be the first time.

"No! I'm so sorry for everything" he had said honestly. He couldn't help but think he had messed up an innocent life.

"I've told you, Sir, time and again; what happened was concensual. There's definitely nothing to be sorry about. If anyone is to be blamed then that person should me. You're drunk, I wasn't" Ifeoma looked trodden as she said these. "I let the emotions of the moment take the best of me."

"Ifeoma I would never stop being apologic. I was supposed to be a boss and mentor but I let my personal grief get in the way" he exhales loudly. Anyway, what do you plan on doing?

"I'm keeping it. Before you say anything" she inhales deeply. "I already know you do not want the child and that's ok but that wouldn't deter me from keeping it" she said, unshield tears in her eyes.

"I would never ask you to do what you wouldn't want to. I might be alot of things but not irresponsible. I own up to my doings. I'll support you in whatever way." Obi knew he wasn't ready to be a father yet again. He knew he wasn't prepared but his morality wouldn't let him abandon his responsibility nor shy away from the result of his actions.

"Actually there's a problem, very cumbersome and intricate."

"Are you ok? Is the child alright? Obi said, fearfully. He knew he couldn't afford to loose another person; he would be doomed.

"I'm fine, the baby is fine too. Its about the pregnancy" she says squinting in no particular direction.

"If the baby is fine then what's the problem with the pregnancy" Obi asked, honestly confused.

Ifeoma knew she had to tell him, not like she had a choice. She was hastening because she didn't want him feeling like; she wanted to come into his life deviously using pregnancy as an entrance ticket. It's true she loves him but she wouldn't in her wildest dreams want to tie him down using pregnancy. She wanted his heart not her hand. She had hoped he would love her first but fate had other plans for her. If she had known she would become pregnant from that one night of undiluted pleasure, Ifeoma would have taken precautions or abstained totally. If she wasn't such an amateur they would've being moving on with their lives, she thought to herself.
