Chapter 1: The Newbie
It's morning and Lord knows Max has been dreading today. She forces herself out of bed and into the shower. After what seems like forever she comes out of the shower and finds her uniform, perfectly ironed, placed on her bed.
With a sigh she goes to sit at her dressing table, staring blankly at the mirror, at herself.
She looks down at her hands and frowns upon seeing her bruised and slightly bleeding knuckles. Just then a knock came from outsider her door.
"Young Miss, your father sent me to tell you to hurry up and be down for breakfast in 10 minutes."
After saying that Max heard the maid's retreating footsteps, she then took a deep breath and got dressed.
After a couple minutes she went downstairs. She found her father and mother quietly eating at the large dinner table with servants standing at each corner ready for an order.
Max sat down.
"You remember what we agreed on..?" asked Mr Johnson.
"Yes, Father."
For as long as Max can remember, all she's ever said to her father are those two words... Why? Because he ruled her life. She does want to defy him sometimes but she knows the consequences of that.
Max barely ate and just then the driver came in.
"Young Miss, it's time to leave for school."
Max stood up slowly and only glanced at her parents and then walked out the door with her backpack.
Mrs Johnson could only sigh.
In the car, Max was quiet. Her driver noticed she's not okay, he glanced at her hands and saw they were bandaged. He let out a little sigh and finally broke the silence, "You excited for your first day at a new school Maxine?", he said with a beaming smile and cheerful tone.
"Not really Mr Williams." she said with her eyes still looking out the window.
Mr Williams then pulled a little box with cookies and chocolate and handed it to Max.
"Well maybe chocolate will cheer you up, plus I saw you really didn't eat much at breakfast." said Mr Williams.
"Thank you." Max took the box and a little smile appeared on her face.
Mr Williams was very happy. He knew Max was a girl of very few words, still she talked to him more than anyone in her family. He was very happy to see that he can make her smile, even if it does last a minute or two.
After a couple minutes of no talking and just the sound of Max eating the cookies. Max had a sudden request.
"Mr Williams if you don't mind... Can you please drop me off a block away from the school..?"
Mr Williams already knew why Max wanted this. She comes from a very wealthy family and last thing she needs is to draw attention to herself. So Mr Williams simply nodded and parked the car just a block away from the school. Max got out of the car.
"Max, behave and be nice, okay.." Mr Williams quickly reminded her.
She only nodded and walked towards her school.
At the schools gate before she even entered she had eyes on her. Some kept looking and some pointed at her... Weirdly enough Max was unbothered. She walked up to a group of boys standing near the main building.
"Hi, I'm new here and I ---"
"Yeah, no shit. Go hang out with the other newbie weirdos kid." interrupted one of the boys.
Max just lightly chuckled and stared at the boy who was way taller than her.
The boy seemed to be intimidated and backed away a bit and couldn't maintain eye contact with Max. She saw his actions and smiled.
She then turned to face another boy who was leaning against the wall, he was tall, very handsome, dark hair, black eyes and very well built, not that it mattered to Max.
"What I was about to ask before rudely interrupted was can someone direct me to the principals office..?" she said looking at the boy leaning on the wall.
He smiled and said , "Follow me."
They were walking in silence. The boy was in front of Max leading the way and she kept quiet. The boy suddenly stopped and Max almost collided into his back. Luckily she stopped in time.
He turned to her an looked at her intently before giving a smirk and folding his hands.
"You know newbie, I haven't your name.."
"It's not relevant, we'll probably never see each other again anyway." Max said with a cold tone and unchanging expression.
"Ouch.." said the boy.
"Dont take it personally okay.. now where's the office, classes are about to start.."
"Oh right, sorry. We're here. Just go in, tell him your n---"
"Thanks."
With that Max disappeared into the office.
The boy was in shock, she seemed unfazed by him which was new. She didn't keep stealing glances at him like most girls. He smiled as he kept looking in the direction she went. He then smiled and went back to his friends.
After getting her timetable and doing her student I.D. Max navigated her way to her first class which had already begun.
When she walked in all eyes were on her.
"Oh, this must be our new student. Dear why don't you come and introduce yourself..."
Max closed the door behind her and searched the room for an empty seat which she then went over and sat down.
She looked at her teacher who was dumbfounded and said, "No thanks, besides knowing my name won't be of help to any of you. You may continue Ms Dantè"
With that she took out her physics book and was ready to learn. The entire class was shocked. The teacher didn't know what to say. She just continued teaching. The kids started gossiping about Max and as always she didn't care.
