Chapter 22: Chapter 22 - Mermaid or a siren

Kui scrambled to climb up, but he really couldn't beat the shark's speed. It charged at him at an impossible speed with its massive jaws wide open.

Without any way of escape, he hurriedly let go of his grip on the rocky walls, letting his body fall down to the depths. The shark did not notice this as it was blind and hit the walls hard.

For a second it looked very disturbed, shaking its head and swimming around in circles.

'Wait, I heard their noses are quite sensitive… if it hits the wall again maybe it will get dissuaded,' his hope for survival was renewed. He hurriedly swam up to its side. "Hey you! look here. I'm right here," he waved his arms around, making frantic movements.

The shark seemed to sense it and swam towards him again.

Like the last time, he quickly let go of the rocky walls and slid down even deeper into the darkness.

Its delicate snot was once again smashed against the rocky terrain. A few bubbles rose out of its huge mouth and the shark looked quite disoriented.

'Great! It works… now is my chance to escape.'

While the shark was distracted, he started to climb up as fast as he could. Since he was underwater, he did not feel the full weight of his body and was able to quickly pull himself up with the least resistance. But the sea urchin clinging to the rocky walls was not helping his cause. The sharp spines pierced into his skin and stuck inside causing immense pain.

Hissing softly, he continued to ascent up towards the light. The others seemed to fear the pit. Maybe the Mers don't like them, and it is possible for Mers to even attack him if he stays here any longer.

The myths about mermaids had a good side and a bad side. The kind, beautiful creatures were called Mers. But the sinister side of them was called sirens. There was a high chance that the creatures that the people here call Mers might be a siren.

Myths only gave a vague expression that sirens would attack their prey with their voice, drag them down to the depths, and feast on them.

He did not wish to be a fish's meal any time soon.

Kui hastened his climb, ignoring the pain in his palm and his feet.

Suddenly, he felt a warm current behind him.

In fear, he gazed back. the shark was still a few meters below him. it was not the creature that was hovering behind him. rather, he only saw a slightly blue tail flicking around.

" Fuck!! a Mer!' he did not wish to stick around to find out if this was a Mer or a siren. He hurriedly climbed up.

But that creature did not seem to let go of him. it followed him, staying a bit far from him.

It was observing him.

'ahhh I stand corrected!!! Fishing is hard!!! very hard!!" Crying inside, he quickly climbed up towards the light.

Suddenly, a huge current pushed him away slightly. He slid down a few feet. Thankfully, he managed to get a grip on the rocky wall before the current swept him away.

Along with this current came that shark again!!

"Fuck!!!" Kui released one of his arms ready to punch the shark's snout. But all of a sudden, a huge force hit the shark piercing it to the rocky walls. Blood gushed out, fogging his vision. But he was able to get a glance of midnight blue hair swirling around.

'I was right there a few seconds ago!!!'

A blood hand pulled out of the shark carcass, reaching out to him.

That was it. he was going to be killed. Kui did not wait even a second more. He climbed up the cliff in a hurry. "Chao! Chao a Mer is after me!!" he screamed at the top of his lungs.

Chao, who was waiting by the cliff, hurriedly grabbed him by his shoulders and started to swim yup. "What happened? did you get hurt?"

"No. but that Mer killed that shark!! With just its hand!! it kind of pierced its arm through it! you never said Mers were that powerful!" he screamed anxiously. his eyes were always on the deep dark pit below them.

Chao's movement suddenly froze. "Mers usually don't get close to us." He mumbled as they surfaced. "Dad quick pull back. a Mer is close by," he shouted as he pushed Kui onto one of the canoes.

Gasping, Kui looked at the beautiful blue ocean in fear. he almost died three times!! Three times in just a day!! This world was much more perilous than he had expected.

Chai hurriedly climbed onto the front of the canoe, balancing the weight. He glanced back at him while squeezing the water out of his long braids. "Your hands..."

Kui took a good look at his wounds. The black spines had pierced right in, leaving behind small black dots. Taking them out was going to be fucking painful.

He sighed softly. "You have to teach me how to swim up."

Chao chuckled. "I didn't realise. even forgot how to swim? It's my bad. I'll teach you another day," he quickly rowed the canoe back towards the huge cliff they climbed down. The others had also gotten out of the water and were retreating a little farther from them. they all had a bountiful hunt of stone fishes tied to their hip belts.

He gazed at his empty hemp rope with a pout. "I caught twenty…... it's all that shark's fault," he grumbled loudly.
