Chapter 1: Chapter 1: Desert Storm

'You have been killed by boss Fire Witch Cashew. Respawn to Congee City?'

'Yes.... No'

The words flash on the screen for the third time. And my finger hovers on the mouse, doubting if I should click on "Yes" and give up on the spot.

"Desert Storm, respawn here and get back into the fray." Our party leader, Lightning Strike commands.

Yes... I click

"Desert Storm, what in the world?"

I wait for the strobing lights of the respawn. The towers of Congee City now visible on my screen. Looking at the cobblestones, I doubt myself if I'm cut out for this.

My fingers open the chats, no doubt this time.

"Lightning Strike, I'm sorry. I don't think I can do this."

And the replies burst out in quick succession...

"I've considered your application to our guild with your Unspecialized character.

That's not what we normally do.

Being Unspecialized is nothing if you can't pull it off.

You're not cut out for Sacrosanct Lair!"

The last sentence shocks me, enough to make my hands tremble. I withdraw my hands from the keyboard. And after a heartbeat, a notification appears. I'm out of the party mission.

I've always felt alone in Glory. I've got no friends who like to raid and battle. Joining a guild would've made all the difference.

Just last week, I submitted my application to join the top guild, Sacrosanct Lair. The guild leader Lightning Strike had instructed me to change classes.

But I want Desert Storm to be an Unspecialized character. So I asked to join the mission, I'd like to prove that I could win. And be the guild's first to do that.

They agreed. But I failed. Terribly.

I worked hard to be accepted into Glory's top guild. Sacrosanct Lair is rigorous with its members. Perform well and you keep your spot. Slack off and you're gone. That's what others don't like about it, the leaders dictate who or what you should become, or what you do.

But I wanted to be in Sacrosanct Lair. And I still do.
