Chapter 4: Monsters in the bed

Author note:

I never quite understood how demigods are... well, sane. I mean look at Annabeth, she had nightmares every night about being eaten by spiders and believed everyone in her family thought she was crazy, and that was before she even had 7 years, after that she ran away and started fighting monsters to death with a hammer. Honestly anyone would have lost their minds, especially considering that spiders are literally meant to be her biggest fear.

After the whole fiasco of an adventure we had, Hanna forced us to remain in the room bored. Honestly it was too much for me so I ended up taking out all the screws form all the chairs, sofas and closet that were in the room.

Eventually the time of the shooting was over and we made our way back home. My mom was a bit annoyed that I caused trouble and grabbed me by the ear all the way the car as punishment.

"You didn't behave even though I told you to." said mom angrily once we got too into the car.

"You never told me I was dyslexic." I reply trying to change the topic. "I thought there was something wrong with me for not being able to understand anything I tried to read but there was an actual reason for it."

"Don't even try to change the topic." said my mom while grabbing my ear once again and pulling it.

"Ah ah ah ah okey okey I am sorry!" I exclaim while grabbing her hand. "Tsch, how did you know I was trying to change the topic?" I ask her.

"You are decades too early to try and play me brat." she replied, once again focusing her eyes on the road.

The rest of the way home was silent, only the music in the car's radio could be heard, along with the noises of the always busy streets of New York. Arriving at our apartment, I went to bed tired and started thinking about what it meant to be dyslexic... honestly it is a bit of a relief. I was starting to think there was something seriously wrong with me but being dyslexic is pretty normal.

While falling asleep, I saw through the window something huge flying outside. My eyes immediately bolted open and I jumped out of bed. Looking out of the window I saw a huge monster in the distance, which scared the sh*t out of me.

I had trouble falling asleep, while every part of my logic told me that I saw wrong, that mosters do not exist, my instincts were screaming danger.

From that day on I started having nightmares, each day more real than before until they became indistinguishable form the time I spent awake.

"AHHHH!" I wake up screaming, drenched in cold sweat while clenching my fists, holding the blanket tightly.

After a few minutes, my mom arrives to my room with a tired expression. "I already told you there are no monsters, so there is no reason for you to be having nightmares." she says while yawning. "What was it this time?" she asks while sitting on the edge of my bed.

"Nothing..." I mutter in a low voice.

"You didn't wake me up for nothing, now tell me what it was so I can tell you it is not real." she says, her eyes half-closed.

"They were back." I say while clenching my fists tighter. "They always come back when I go to sleep." I continue, tears threatening to leave my eyes.

"Well, monsters aren't real." my mom said dryly. "Now fall asleep again, I need to wake up early tomorrow so I can't stay awake all night." she said before laying down on my bed next to me. "I will stay here tonight but I won't always do this so you need to act like a grown up."

Time went by and the nightmares didn't stop, but I got better at hiding it. My mom was glad I was no longer waking up screaming and assumed I stopped having nightmares at all, which caused our relationship, which had began to strain a bit, to improve.

A year went by and I began going to attend school. It was a private school for rich kids, which was honestly what I expected from my mom who is a famous actress. Since I inherited her looks, all the teachers kept praising me for my cuteness, though the praises ended once they realised how troublesome I was as a student. Between my dyslexia and my ADHD it was pretty obvious that I would be any teacher's worst nightmare.

I didn't make many friends... to be honest it surprised me how I was able to function properly as a person, I mean I was barely sleeping and I was only four, kids are supposed to only sleep! Well between my growing paranoia of monsters being everywhere and my inability to focus on anything, including conversations, socialising with others became more of a job that required great effort rather than a nice thing to do.

"The school called me." said my mom once she got home. "Why have you been falling asleep in class?"

"Because I was tired." I reply in a worst tone than intended. I have been a bit stressed and irritated lately due to lack of sleep so my humour has worsened.

"Watch your tone." said my mom angrily. "And stop causing trouble in school, I can't have them call me when I am working."

"Oh right, God forbid you would be forced to take care of your daughter after receiving a call from school." I reply while rolling my eyes.

After earning myself a solid slap, I went to bed without dinner.

"Sigh, damn it! It is all because of the nightmares..." I mutter angrily under my teeth.

Eventually the tiredness got the better of me and I fell asleep despite knowing what was coming.

Opening my eyes everything was dark, and from under the bed, shadows started emerging, taking the shape of smiling demons with a smoke-like constitution.

"It is just a dream, it is just a dream, it is just a dream." I repeatedly say while closing my eyes and covering myself under the blanket. The blanket however proved useless when the demons took it off.

"AHHHH!" I scream while waking up, breathing several times while my heart beats rapidly. As I remove the blanket that was covering my body, I move to the edge of the bed while putting my feet down. Before I could take a step however, shadows grew form under the bed and took the shape of hands, grabbing my legs and pulling me under it.

"AHHHHHH!" I scream as I wake up. Breathing heavily, I look around in hopes to finally be awake, however I am disappointed as once again shadows start growing from under the bed, this time engulfing the entire bed and devouring it completely with me still in it.

"AHHHH!"
