Chapter 2: Polar

"Polar? so something like opposite? the hell is that supposed to mean?"

He was so confused that he didn't notice that he started putting his hand on his mouth in a thoughtful manner. He looked around in the box, searching for something else but was, in the end, unsuccessful.

As he analyzed the CD, except for the text, he couldn't find anything suspicious, but even after an hour passed and he laid in his bed he couldn't get the weird CD out of his head. A thought shot through his head leading his gaze to the weird PC. Even though it was an older model, looking to be from the 2000s, it had, as he thought, a CD drive.

He booted it up and created an account.

As he typed Jonas into the name slot and created a password, he got onto the desktop which for some reason had windows installed. Jonas laid back into the wooden chair he quickly got from the kitchen downstairs and put the CD into the Drive. While trying put it into the Drive he hesitated for a bit, fearing that it might break the mysterious computer, but after thinking it through for a while he put it in.

The first thing that happened was that the PC instantly began smoking and cracking, shortly thereafter a loud crack could be heard. But Jonas already stopped hearing at the first signs of smoke as his vision instantly turned dark.

"uuah..." He groaned while slowly opening his eyes. He didn't know what had happened but he could clearly remember the smoke coming out of the PC, weirdly enough he couldn't remember the rest of what happened, it just felt like a hole in his memory. He slowly went into a sitting position, looking at his legs.

He noted that his prosthetic leg still seemed to be fine as he pulled up his right pant leg. He also still had his cheap winter jacket on.

As he slowly tried to stand up, he looked around him for a bit, noticing that he was somewhere in a weird forest. The peculiar looking forest seemed to almost let no light through its thick roof of pine and the strange little dirt road he sat on looked not only overgrown but also rarely used.

No tire tracks could be spotted on the thin path and the weird bushes Jonas had never seen before seemed to invade the little tracks privacy. Jonas stood there in shock, not being able to think of anything he could compare the weird scenery to. You could instantly differentiate this forest from normal ones just by looking at one feature of it, that being the incredibly high trees which seemed to resemble some sort of pine tree. What also piqued his interest was the weird grass growing literally everywhere beside the road, even though no light reached those places.

The Grass, which looked to be about one and a half meters tall, had a deep shade of green and looked like a fence surrounding the little path.

The trees which shared similarities to the likes of pines, were gigantic, incomparable to anything that he ever saw before in terms of flora.

The first few words which could leave his mouth where "wha- where the hell am i?"

He grabbed into his pockets, looking for anything that would help him a bit, something like his phone or something should be able to at least pin down his location. But he soon had to realize that he put his phone onto the table next to the PC, which probably means that it was destroyed. The other thing he found was a metal "storm lighter", which wasn't really helpful in the sense of finding out where he was, but was nonetheless not without its uses.

Once again, Jonas looked into the sky which could barely be seen through the thick treetops, but the few light rays that made it through showed him that it was somehow day, even though he clearly remembered it being night. Although this was the least of his worries, he was still concerned as this whole situation was just way to bizarre for him to just ignore it. For one of the first times in his life he tried to remember something so desperately he held his forehead, the thing he wanted to know was a way to somehow find a path towards the nearest sign of civilization.

After scrolling through his memory's the only things he could think of would be his smartphone or a map. He didn't have either of those.

After thinking for a while he decided to walk towards north, but he soon noticed that the lack of sunlight in the almost completely dark forest made it considerably colder than he first expected. His cheap jacket helped a little bit in fighting of the cold but he knew that if it continued to get colder when night fell over the forest, he would probably freeze to death. Human's could freeze out faster then one would think. A healthy man with normal clothes on would not survive more than a few minutes when sleeping outside in the cold even at a temperature of 0°C, therefore he probably needed to find some source of heat.

As he walked down the street, the noise of his prosthetic leg got louder and louder, seemingly drowning out the loud scenery of the foreign birds singing through the thick forest. He looked around himself with the annoying clacking sound in his ear, looking for twigs and the likes for him to eventually start a fire somewhere on the road later on.

After walking for about 3 hours of nonstop clacking, he finally decided to sit down on the road and prepare the fire to finally get himself some warmth. He heard a river somewhere nearby as he could clearly make out its noise. The reason of him being so sure that the river was nearby was that he could hear it, it was very difficult for noise to get through the thick grass on the roadside. Either way the river didn't do much for him as he surely wasn't going to walk through that tall hay to reach it.

He threw the sticks he took with him into a pile, then carefully build a little pyramid out of them as to make it burn faster and better. A fact he also remembered looking for in books when he was interested in survival skills, although the fascination for them originated from a fake survival show on the TV. He got out his lighter and finally got the flame burning after a few tries, then he held it to the small pyramid and slowly lit the fire.

He held his hands towards the slowly growing flames as he could see the few rays of shining light disappearing from the treetops, indicating that it was getting late. He already was tired as he didn't even get a single bit of sleep before the weird PC incident, but the constant stream of thoughts kept him awake, with his previously dead eyes now giving an absent feeling as he looked into the small flames of the little campfire.

Where was he? How did he come here? What happened to everything he Left?

Those were just a few questions of the hundreds he asked himself at this moment. Although he thought for quite a while, he couldn't shake of the feeling of loneliness. He broke of contact with others since his mother and sister died, leaving his friends texts and questions unanswered. The feeling of loneliness wasn't a stranger to him, but this felt different. This wasn't the same as him cutting contact with his social circle, no... this was as if that very circle didn't even exist.

There seemed to be nothing, the darkness outside the range of the campfire seemed infinite... the sheer blackness of the outside wasn't even what scared him, what scared him the most was the thought of what exactly hid inside that darkness. A monster? maybe there is someone out there watching him, what if he comes closer? What should he do once the fire runs out of wood to burn?

His previously relaxed sitting position tensed up. He put his legs closer to his body, wrapping his arms around his solid body, which tremoured profusely, though Jonas himself wasn't sure if it was the cold that led his body to shake or the crushing fear of the unknown.

He once again looked into the fire, this time the dead eyes seemed not full of emptiness, no, instead they looked full of dread. Every noise made outside the safe reach of the warm light was a possible stalker, maybe even a to this day undiscovered monster or beast. How should he know? the only thing's he was good at were learning and remembering, maybe knowledge as well, but even if he worked out for a bit and trained his body, He didn't know how to fight. Even if he could fight, how should he defeat a beast or horrid monster? a punch in the face is useless, he would probably even injure himself while doing so.

"Huh? whats that?" Jonas swiftly said. There in the distance he saw something. Something which shouldn't exist in this abyss. He saw a quickly approaching, orange light.

Jonas sat still, completely frozen. He was mortified at this sight. Maybe this was the weird monster, the atrocious undiscovered beast. He couldn't even lift a single finger.

As the light came closer and closer to the little campfire, the terrified Jonas could make out a weird black silhouette behind the light. The further the distance it closed, the clearer the shape of the silhouette. Jonas instantly relaxed as he could clearly make out its frame, it was definitely a human.

As the distance between fire and light was roughly ten meters, Jonas heard a quick shout.

"Got some room for me at that fire there?" the shout rang.
