Chapter 3: 3. First Element: Eup

It seemed like he had walked all night before he reached the neighboring village. Carrying a small sack of his belongings, he waved at the village guards and passed by them.

Mertin was a little larger than Theedres. instead of fishing and farming, Mertin was more farming and hunting. They had huge fields of crops taller than some of the houses and livestock ranges averaging to the size of the forest he used to adventure.

Being kept in Theedres, this was the first village he visited. The fact that the streets were flooded with merchants in extravagant clothing allowed Doren to not draw attention of the guards. And since every one of the farmers stands were busy, Doren snuck a pearple.

The soft, sweet fruit made his mouth water. As he bit into it, he felt eyes draw to him.

"Did you just take that?" she asked from a shadowy alley between two businesses.

"What?" he took another bite, "I didn't take anything." Another bite. "In fact," he threw the rest of it into his mouth and grinned. "I don't even have anything." he laughed with his mouth full. As he began walking away, a string wrapped around his ankles. With a tug, he fell face first into the dirt.

"You did take it. You theives are pathetic anymore. We do NOT take kindly to people like you." she scoffed, walking out of the shadows.

"What do you mean by that?!" he growled and turned around. When he saw her, his eyes grew. "You have ears on the top of your head?!" he asked frightened, "And a tail?!"

She closed her eyes and clenched her fist. "Do you got to be so rude about it?" she hit him on top of the head and he fell back into the dirt.

"I'm sorry, I've never seen a person like you." he apologized, a lump growing out of his scalp where she hit him.

While he was trying to get back up, she called the guards to them. Now being surrounded, he looked around at the men dressed in armor.

"Ever been placed under arrest?" she asked him, wrapping the string around him, making sure to secure his arms to his sides.

"No." he said under his breath.

"Well I guess you get to experience two new things today." she motioned for the guards to pick him up. Like a rolled rug, a guard threw Doren over a shoulder. As they walked away he looked up at her. With a beautiful smile on her face, she waved.

Doren was thrown into a cell in the middle of the village's square. One of the guards cut the string and knelt down face to face with Doren.

"Do you have any elements?" the guard asked.

"Elements?" Doren asked confused. "No. I just have a Powerhart. It's pretty useless though. I have no idea how to use it."

"Can't be too safe." the guard put a stick in between the cell bars and touched the end of it to Doren. A strong, blue bolt of electricity shot through the stick and into Doren. Flailing about, Doren crashed back into the dirt and was out.

While he was passed out on the ground, he had a dream. It was bright, as if he was on top of clouds on a sunny day. The air was still, but his hair stayed flying about.

Looking around, he noticed that he was floating. unsure of whether he was alive or dead now, he moved forward. His legs never moved while he did, he just flew through the open space he found himself in.

"What.. what is this place?" he asked, his voice echoing out.

The bright void didn't respond.

"Is there any possibilities that I could leave here?" he asked, but there was still no response.

Now getting irritated, Doren tried going back the same way he had just come. As if there was an invisible wall, he ran right into it. Feeling around, the wall was cold and was pushing his hand back with little gusts of air.

"Well that's... Interesting." he continued feeling around.

"Where are you going?" a voice asked from behind him.

With wide eyes and shaking limbs he turned around. Looking into the endless voice of white light, there was no figure. It was like the light was talking to him.

"I.. uh..." he began but found it difficult to speak, "I want to get back to what I was doing. I really hope I'm not dead."

A laugh that sounded of thunder cracked through. "You're not dead, child! This might be a wonderful opportunity for you however." The light began fading away. In it's place was the cell that he was thrown into. "Doren Sin Mercer, born with a Powerhart -- the only one of this generation -- the difficult life you have been given is unfair. You will feel pain, fear, strength, you will grow in wisdom, and learn from every mistake. Every journey must be started somewhere."

As the voice stopped talking, the bright white light turned to a pale pastel green. As Doren reached out his hand to it, the green color began. As his reach got closer, the green absorbed into the skin on his fingertips.

"Always keep calm. But be fierce in your strikes. With those words I bestow upon you Eup. The element of air and wind."

With that the voice echoed away from him. His arm was still reaching forward, his eyes wide, and his jaw open.

"But... but wait I've never used my powers.. how am I supposed to do that? Why only the one? I have the Powerhart!" he frustratingly lowered his arm and his head. "I still have so many questions.."

The light then faded into darkness. His eyes slowly opened and he sat up. Unable to stand straight up in the tiny cell, he began brushing the dirt and dust off of his clothing. With there already being dust in the air, kicked up from the many merchants and citizens, a small grin crossed his thin lips.

His eyes began glowing the same shade of green from his dream. The dirt and dust in the air ceased falling and moving around. He twirled his pointer finger as the dust only began swarming the head of the guard. As if they were being swarmed by a nest of angry Unbees.

In a panic, the guards began swatting at the dust particles. The dirt in the air began to slice at their skin, while picking up speed. While the guards were in distress from the balls of dust and dirt, Doren put his hand like a knife. His finger nails began glowing like his eyes. In a quick motion, as if he was swinging a sword, he cut the bars of his cell and climbed out.

"That's better," he began walking past the struggling guards, "Now time to find some food."
