Chapter 2: Rough Beginning

3 Years Later...…

He was on the run. Jamal weaved through the alleys of his town. I can't keep doing this, he said to himself. He quickly looked behind him as a group of teens from his school were chasing them. Some of them were using their powers like flight and the ability to manipulate the materials around them to reach him.

"Guys, can we, like, chill out please!" Jamal yelled at them.

They, of course, yelled for him to slow down. He knew that doing so would have him beaten again. Still running, Jamal took a quick breath and focus on his hand. A small flame appeared and he threw it quickly back at them. Not to his surprise, one of the people chasing him simply flicked the weak attack away and the group laughed at him. Jamal running out of options turned around, only to hit his head in the wall. Why am I so weak, Jamal questioned himself. He always struggled to use his powers which for all he knew was only the ability to manipulate fire from his hands. Most kids had powers he could only wish for, such as encasing their body in ice or seeing slightly into the future. The group managed to surround him while he was thinking and when he realized what would happen, he tried to get up only to get knocked down immediately. He saw the biggest teen out of all of them, Perla, stand over him. She raised her fist and her entire left arm size increased by sixty percent. She then yelled with all her might and pummeled him with punch after punch. It was strong enough to leave a small crater in the ground. Each one, Jamal screamed in agony as the other people laughed at him. Some onlookers watched with horror and a few covered their mouths. They wouldn't do anything because they feared they too would be injured.

Soon, the other teens joined in with her beating and kicking Jamal senselessly. He was fading into darkness and each breath hurt, let alone think. I didn't deserve this, I only wanted to talk, he blanked out of thought.

"And that's for trying to steal from us!" Perla yelled at him. "Come on, let him suffer here alone."

She spat on him and walked away as did the other people in the group. A few minutes after the assault, he attempted to get up but was just in too much pain. He cursed himself for letting it get this bad. If he tried to fight, maybe they would respect him more. But no, they decided to chase him for asking her for a pencil at school a few hours ago. She refused, like everyone else did, and so he used his pen instead even though he didn't like to. When the class finished, he walked out and was going to his next class when he got pushed. Perla attempted to blame him for trying to steal from him and soon her goons came behind her. And that's how he got to where he was.

Come on, I got to get up, just do it, he yelled at himself mentally. He grabbed the edge of the small crater and instantly a shot of pain came from everywhere. Ignoring it to his best ability, he slowly stood back up. His face felt a little wet and when he touched it, it wasn't water or sweat, but blood. His body ached miserably as he looked around. The onlookers weren't there when he got up and he assumed they left him to fend for himself. He couldn't even cry, this didn't surprise him one bit. He slowly got out of the crater and started to limp to his favorite restaurant. They'll help me there, he believed, I can't live like this anymore!
