Chapter 42: Party Crashers

The banquet started as soon as they sat down at the high table. Doran was sitting between Rhaella and Mors, several times throughout the banquet the prince helped his brother by cutting his food and such.

As he cut Mors's lamb filet into small pieces he heard Lady Marla comment the follow:

"You have a very considerate son, Princess Obella. He will be a great father one day."

"I have no doubt about that, my lady. My Doran has always been very considerate of the little ones." Obella replied.

"Do you already have an engagement in mind, princess?" Duncan asks.

"No, your grace." Trystanne responds dryly and rather curtly, the prince is not very in favor of arranged marriages since his father tried to marry him by force with a woman twenty-four years older than him when he was twelve years old. Trystanne Dayne had a tremendous argument with his father and stormed out of Starfall, not to return for many years.

He became a squire to a hedge knight who he impressed with his swordsmanship and within two years he was knighted. On his first tourney as a knight he met and fell in love with Obella, to be worthy of marrying the future Princess of Dorne he set out to become the best swordsman on the continent. After several years of arduous effort he gained fame as the greatest Dornish swordsman, a title he had to defend against many opponents.

After marrying Obella, the silver prince finally fixed his relationship with his father, for his siblings more than anything, and his father gave him Dawn upon finding him worthy of the legendary sword.

Trystanne never had a good relationship with Jason Dayne but after the failed engagement his already tenuous bond broke into a thousand pieces, even after they reconciled Trystanne never completely forgave him; for how he treated him as a child and for trying to force him to marry.

`None of my children will go through the same as long as I live, even if I have to face my wife and good mother.` The silver prince thinks with iron determination.

"Oh? You will follow the Martell tradition then?" Duncan asks.

"Martell tradition?" Rhaella repeats, confused.

"After Princess Nymeria`s conquest of Dorne, and House Nymeros Martell and most of Dorne acquired many Rhoynar traditions. One of the oldest traditions of Rhoynar culture is allowing the firstborn of the ruling houses to choose their spouse." Obel explains.

"But there have been Martell heirs and heiresses who had arranged marriages." Rhaella says confused. "The marriage between Princes Myriah and King Daeron II was arranged by King Baelor I, and the marriage between Prince Maron Martell and Princess Daenerys was also an arranged marriage."

"You know very well your history, princess." Obella looks at her approvingly. "But there is more to these stories than what you read in the books written by maesters ignorant of Dornish lore."

"It is correct that King Baelor I suggested the marriage between his cousin Daeron and Princess Myriah to mend relations between Dorne and the rest of the kingdoms but Princess Myriah had the option of rejecting the engagement." Doran tells Rhaella, who widens her eyes in surprise.

"That wasn't in the book." Doran hears her murmur.

"As mother said, those books were written by people who do not know our traditions. Not everything you read in books is completely true, you will find that there are dozens of books on the same subject and many are as different as day and night." Doran whispers.

"Then how will I know that what I read is true, not lies or incomplete stories?"

"Reading several books on the same topic from different sources, you analyze the content and then use your own reasoning."

"That's a lot of work," Rhaella replies with a pout. "Why can't maesters be objective when writing?"

Doran chuckles a bit and answers her.

"Propaganda," Rhaella raises an eyebrow and Doran follows. "The phrase `History is written by the victors` explains it."

"And what about your youngest son? Do you have someone in mind for young Mors?" At Jason Lannister's question both Trystanne and Doran tense, Obella gave them a warning look before answering.

Jason Lannister is the younger brother of Lord Tytos, while the brothers share the same green eyes and gold-like hair there end their similarities. Jason is a tall, muscular man, built like a warrior. His character is also very different from his brother`s, Jason is a tough man with a fierce temper, many say that he would be a better Lord than his brother and they may be right but Jason loves his brother too much to even think of betraying him.

Lady Rohanne disappeared when Jason was still very young, since Lord Gerold only paid attention to the twins Tywald and Tion, Jason only received love and attention from Tytos, which formed a very strong bond between them. Although the brothers had friction, such as when Tytos ordered Jason to marry Alys Stackspear (who died giving birth to their son Damon) after deflowering her, their bond never wavered.

"Mors is too young for such matters. We will wait until he is older to decide such things." She responds politely.

"I like the Martell traditions more than the Westerosi`." Duncan laughs jovially, "If all of Westeros were so open minded our lives would be so much easier." Doran spotted the look Duncan gave his wife.

'What kind of king would Duncan Targareyen be?' Doran can't help but wonder.

"Even if we had that freedom some things wouldn't change..." Doran hears Rhaella murmur sadly.

"Because of her being of low birth?" Doran asks quietly, Rhaella nods.

"Nobility would never accept a queen of peasant origin."

Doran looks at all the nobles gathered in that room and thinks of the others he met during his six years of life, he has to agree with Rhaella; nobility would never accept a low birth person having a higher position than them.

`If Duncan had not been forced to choose between his wife and the throne, Jenny would most likely have had "an unfortunate accident".` think the prince with disgust.

After the servants brought some delicious honey cakes with blackberries and nuts, a man approached the high table with a glass in hand. Doran had never seen him before but his weasel-like features looked familiar.

"My lords!" The man who stood in front of the table yells. "I would like to propose a toast to Lord Tytos! To this wonderful banquet and many more to come!"

"Lord Tytos!" Many shout drinking from their glasses.

"And for the engagement between House Lannister and House Frey!" The man continues, the ruckus calms down and everyone looks at him surprised; more than one person with eyes wide open. "To the marriage of Genna Lannister and my brother, Emmon!"

"For the union of our houses!" Another man gets up, Doran recognizes his weasel face.
