Chapter 2: Chapter Two : The Truth

'It was 20 years ago since I saw Abby taken away by the people from the asylum. Sam is a good brother. He's been visiting Abby almost every Hanukkah and St. Patrick's Day. He would tell me how's Abby doing without me asking. Several times, he insisted me to follow him but I never did. I live in a dream, a dream that most people out there wishes to have. I have a got job in a well-known company, I have a good and caring husband, the one whom I fell in love during my college years. We met about 10 years ago, and we got married after 2 years of dating.

I am blessed to have a happy family. I have a son and a daughter. Harvey is a smart kid, he started to read at 3 years old. My husband will praise him and often he said 'This is Mini Me'. My sweet little daughter, Haley who loves to wear bandanna every day so I always need to buy some spare of bandannas, in various colour or patterns that she would love to wear, in case she missing it especially at school. She's quite picky sometimes but she's everybody's sweetheart. My husband, the one who's been with me ups and down during college years, is the one that I knew would raise and love our babies unconditionally', she explains.

'How was your relationship with your brother, Sam?', ask the mid-age lady with her curly hair.

'Sam is my beloved brother. He's kind, warm-hearted, protector and hardworking. He quit school to find a job and manage the farm after our parents died. He raised me well. He's breadwinner', she continued. Her hands are tied with a handcuff. She looks at the mirror behind the lady, knowing John standing behind the mirror.

'Did you know who killed both of your parents?', ask the lady again with a pen and a notepad, ready to continued to jot down the information.

She screamed and stood up 'I didn't do it. I didn't kill them', tears started falling on her cheeks again. 'I didn't do it. I love them', she looks at the lady. Several officers rush in to hold her. 'I didn't do it, I swear. It's Abby. She did the same thing to Sophia'.

The lady stood up and with a gold badge tied at her belt, she ordered the officers to put her back on the chair so she could finish the investigation. 'Sophia Drew Hill', she remembers the name. It seems she started to pick up. 'What did you know about her death?', ask the detective.

'Abby told me she used Arsenic to poison Aunt Sophia', she looks deeply into the detective's eyes, as if her gaze penetrated to the wall.

'Mrs. Winthrop, I need you to focus on me', said the detective, trying to bring the consciousness.

With her sad look, she looks at the mirror once more, and she started to speak with her gaze straight to the mirror and she does not blink for while, 'She said, she needs to get rid the pains too, she said that we can share, but I object. She wants to be normal. I cannot let her do it. But she did it anyway'.

The detective seems confused and she continued 'So, you are saying Mrs Abigail Winthrop has killed Sophia Drew Hill?'

'She killed her because she was mean to her. She poisoned her, mixing and replacing her capsules. All of her capsules', she cried. 'I shouldn't bring her back home'.

The detective sigh. There's a lot of things going inside her mind and she looks at her again. She took her time to make a conclusion. After a minute, she stood up and she sends signals to officers that still guarded at the back of the room to pick her up. They draw a few paces ahead and hold the offender. 'Send her to jail'.

The offender closes her eyes with tears running down her cheeks. She speaks before she let the officers take her, 'Please, look after them. They are in danger'.

'I will', replied Detective Maureen. The officers then took the offenders to jail and Detective Maureen enters the door next to the interrogation room. She put the file on the table where she found a guy in the black suit and another in his smart white casual outfits. She closed her eyes to find some comfort but she realized she cannot take any moment longer. 'I need to speak to you, Mr Kingsley', said Maureen. 'This is important. You heard what she said, your family might not yet safe. I need you to cooperate with me', she urged with her eyes fixed on John.

6 months before...

It was a typical weekend. Yet, there is no noise that can be heard but only the clicking of the big wooden clock downstairs. The sunlight rays seem did not fully penetrated the curtain, perhaps it's probably going to rain today. Kate shifted her body to the left only found her husband sound asleep and soft snoring. She takes a few moments to look at him. She got up from the bed and sat down for a while to stabilize herself. She then opened the curtains a bit on the window on the edges to see the weather today. She then brushing her hair with her fingers, roughly to take all of them and make a hair bun. She sheaves a comfort grey hairy slippers but suddenly she felt her hand grabbed.

'Where do you want to go?' a soft warm baritone voice heard.

Kate turns around and she leans over 'Good morning, handsome'.

John opened his eyes a little slowly, and his gaze fixed on Kate. 'Is Teletubbies up?'

Kate shook her head and laugh a little. John shifted his body toward Kate. 'Is that means, we shouldn't wake them yet?', he flirted.

'They probably up soon, honey', said Kate.

'Last night was very tiring and we did not have any chance', said John, who was still sleepy. Kate stood up and unleash her hair. She put the hair band at the closet near the mirror.

'I wanna take shower, or I let you do the bed?', she said that while walking towards the bathroom. John then quickly got up from the bed and stepped into the bathroom.

Kids woke up pretty late, and Kate's already preparing meals for lunch. John brings the kids to downstairs with book and pencil case in their hands. In front of the kitchen counter, John pulls the wooden dining chair for Haley, whereas the oldest, Harvey can manage himself. John then grabs two glasses and take a jar full with warm milk heated by Kate, bring it to the dining table. 'You Teletubbies late for breakfast. Tell me what's getting you late for this morning?', ask John while he passing the glass full of milk to each of them. Kate then still cuts tomatoes. John joins them to sit at the table.

'We're playing puzzles with Thea and Ben', said little Haley.

'Yeap, they were here last night', said Harvey, just taking a sip with a mouth with white milk residue.

'And Thea was crying because I win', claimed Haley. John pulls some tissues from the tissue box. 'Here buddy, wipe your mouth'.

'When they got here?', ask John.

'Around 6 and they went home at 10, approximately', replied Kate, during stir the chicken soup.

'You're late, daddy', said Haley. John tucks his daughter blond hair to the back of her ear and it seems Harvey begin to jot something on his book.

'I got to work with a lot of people yesterday. They need my help desperately so I had to', replied John. He noticed Harvey starting to focus. 'Hey buddy, homework?'

'Yes daddy, erm. Can you help me with this?'

John rises from his seat and moves closer between them. 'Sure, what is it?', he started to focus on them. While Harvey started explaining, John takes a quick glance at his wife at back and winked. Kate cannot help but smiles.

As the day passed so quickly, Kate tries to mesmerize every moment that she has seen, she glances over a glass of wine and John walking downstairs. The 2517 Ridgeway Royale Cherry big wooden clock on the left to the living room ringed at 9 o'clock. John spotted his wife at the kitchen counter, with a bottle of wine.

'Need a break from a day? I can help', said John as he walks straight to the kitchen cabinet to take another glass of wine.

Kate smiles. The smell of cookies on the rise baked in the oven. 'What are this for?', ask John. 'Something happens?'

'No, that's for nothing. I miss the taste of wine',

'Really? How long since our last date?', John tries to memorize the last event he had with his wife. 'Oh, two years ago?, Oh, I'm completely forgot..'

'Babe, it's alright. I don't really mind', Kate laugh, 'We have Teletubbies, and superheroes job, beautiful home, this is what makes my day worth. With you', Kate lean over to kiss John.

John pressed his lips to hers and pull away after a while. 'How much exactly you had the drink?', he looks at the bottle before he pours it into his glass. 'Started feeling spinning sensations, honey?'

'I do wanna dance. Maybe I need some comfort', she drew smiles and put her hand on John's waist.

John smiles and laughs a little 'Honey, you drunk', he grabs his wife's waist. 'Let me get this done and I'll get back to you later, alright?'

'No, I'm good', replied Kate. 'Thank you John', she places her palm on his cheek. 'I love you'

John placed Kate's head gently on the pillow and cover her with a blanket. He then turned off the light and let the door open. He walked through the hallway and check on Harvey and Haley's bedroom, which their room are opposite to each other and found them sound asleep. He then walks downstairs and begins to clean up. He washes the glasses and took the tray to the counter and place a cloth on top before switched off the light. As he begins to walk upstairs, a telephone ringed.

With wonder and suspicions, he runs a few steps down to grab the telephone at the living room, just a few paces ahead. After a few moments, he put the handset as the line cut off. He sighs. He seems confused. What Sam told him is really making his head full with questions. He holds his head in his hands. He wondered why his wife never told her about this. As the clock ringed, he decided to go upstairs and go to bed.

What makes John so confused after his conversation with Samuel?

What Kate hid from him?
