Chapter 2: Chapter 2: Ragnarok

"I want you to listen close and I want you to listen well. Everything you have heard in Norse mythology is real. Well, mostly, that part about Ragnarok is only partly true." Thor said.

"What do yo-" Edmund began.

"I'm sorry but we don't have much time. Seas are rising, stars are being hidden by smog, the winter is here. You don't think it strange that you have had three days of perpetual snow, especially in Britain? Ragnarok is upon us. Not the Ragnarok foretold in Norse prophecies but the true Ragnarok. The world is undergoing a reset. At midnight tonight, the monsters of so called Norse mythology will return and we Gods can do nothing about it. Shortly afterwards all signs of humanity's technology and development will disappear and the world will return to how it once was. Wild and untouched by man. The only memories of that age will be in the minds of those that survived the transition, and make no mistake they will be survivors. Many will die. But we Gods are not ignorant to humanity's plight. We have created a system. One modelled after the games you have created and designed to help humanity grow stronger. With each monster you kill you will gain experience and with enough experience you will level up. Once you reach level ten you will gain experience by performing activities associated with your class. This is designed to make it more fair for those with job related classes."

"If you are Gods, why can't you protect us?" Edmund asked.

"Because, Edmund, in this new world we Gods will begin to fade and so new Gods must rise. Successors to our thrones. I choose you Edmund Torden. I want you to be the next Thor."

"Even if I choose to believe you, which I don't, why me? And how do you know my name?" asked Edmund.

"I'm a God, you're name is the least of what I know." he replied, "As for why you? It's because I see something in you, Edmund. I see myself. I see a kind, courageous, caring and loyal man, willing to put his life on the line to protect his friends. I see in you the heart of warrior, one with the bravery to not only survive in this new world, but thrive. If you choose to become my successor once you reach level ten it will be officially recognized and you will gain the associated class. We do not have much time left. Midnight is fast approaching and once it arrives I will no longer be able to manifest in this world. I suggest that you find yourself a weapon so that when that time comes you are ready. You must go out and kill as many monsters as possible, the sooner you reach level ten, the better. Do not worry about being overwhelmed by strong monsters, it will take time for them to return, but be wary, any of them is enough to kill you on their own. My time has run out and I must now leave. I wish you luck, Edmund, you shall need it."

"Wai-" But Edmund did not get to finish his sentence for their was a flash of lightning, the crash of thunder and Thor was gone. Disappeared without a trace.

'This can't possibly be true.' he thought 'But just incase, I'd better do what he said.'. Edmund got out of bed and moved to the door. Just as he was about to leave the room he thought 'On the off chance this is true, I should be prepared.' and so he moved back to his wardrobe and got changed. When he was done he was dressed in some slim blue jeans, a black shirt and a black leather jacket, of which he thought he would provide some protection.

He then moved to the mirror to see how he looked. His short blonde hair had a glossy look and slightly curled up at the front. He had piercing blue eyes and a slim nose. His looks were enough to make most girls at school swoon and his smile would even make some faint.

Feeling ready he left the room and traveled downstairs. He then proceeded to move out the door into the falling snow.

The entire ground was covered in a thick, pearly white blanket that crunched underfoot as he moved towards his Fathers garage. His Father worked as a carpenter and kept numerous tools. If there was anything his family kept that was useful as a weapon, it was likely to be there.

Opening the door to the garage, surprised it was unlocked and thinking his Father likely forgot to lock it, he moved towards the small shelf where his Father kept the tools. Nothing looked like it would be useful as a weapon and time was running out. There was less than two minutes until midnight. Edmund was beginning to get worried when a small hammer caught his eye. 'It may not be the best weapon, but if push comes to shove at least I can bludgeon the monsters to death.' he thought.

He then moved away from the shelf and looked at the clock. Less than thirty seconds till midnight. It was time to see if he really met Thor or if he just hallucinated the whole thing.

The clock struck midnight.
