Chapter 2: Rain of blood(dew)

We were on our way home from the beach when it happened... when it,

happened.

She was attacked, I was afraid that Cathy might have died.

Let me explain, I remember it vividly.

Cathy is the shy one of the two and she kinda has a crush on me, that same day I had received a letter from her. It was a love letter a confession or whatever you might have called it.

I was kinda taken aback by it because I only thought of them as friends, really great friends but that was it.

I couldn't bring myself to think other wise.

And because I was unsure of what to do, I ended up consulting with

Kate about it given that she probably knew Cathy best.

"What? She did that?" Kate exclaimed almost shouting.

"Quiet, will you," I counter-exclaimed.

"I haven't responded to her yet." I half-murmured.

She was walking ahead of us.

"If that's true then she probably knows what we're talking about."

She said softly with a faint smile that could be seen even under street lamps.

"Anyway it's probably your fault for being so dependable all the time, I think she sees you as someone she can entrust with her heart."

"But we're friends, we've been that way since we met, since your- ..." I recognized that where I was going was still a delicate subject and decide to stop, only a little too late.

"It been twelve years now, and it doesn't hurt as much as it did then, so it's ok," she said with even more of a smile though her eyes contradicted her.

Twelve years ago on a night like this their father died. He was stabbed and robbed. That's how we met. When I saw them crying I promised myself I'd never let them cry again.

"It's your fault, now go talk to her!" She said and pushed me.

And...

That's when...

It happened...

Fear...

Dread...

Anger...

All came to me at once I couldn't even think straight ...Cathy...

No.

No.

"Nooooooo!"

The sky seemed to grow and stretch and she fell ever so slowly, the handle of a combat knife at her side and its blade buried completely in her abdomen.

I could hear Kate screaming behind me but it seamed so far away. Without thinking or uttering anything else I ran to her and held her in my arms.

"It doesn't hurt," she said her voice barely a whisper and her eyelids barely open. "Is that bad?" "I don't wanna die." She added softly, a tear drop rolling down her cheek.

"It's gonna be alright ok?" I tried.

Kate had fallen to her knees and sat like that not moving at all.

A crowd had started to gather.

"Don't leave me," Cathy said and coughed. A trail of blood ran from her lips.

"Is she ok?" asked someone I was in too much of a shock to even try to figure out who said it.

"Quick help me get her in the cab we need to get her to a hospital!" I kept my eyes focused on her.

No.

Don't go.

Please.

Slowly her head leaned to one side and her eyelids closed. Suddenly something hit me across the face really hard.

My eyes slowly focused on the blond haired girl who'd slapped me.

"Snap out of it!" She yelled.

***

In minutes we were at the hospital, she was rushed into surgery. Soon after Kate arrived with her mother who slapped me twice and forbade me from ever seeing her daughters again.

"Mom it wasn't his fault!" Kate tried fruitlessly.

Her mother's eyes were red and I saw that she'd been crying. So...

"I'm sorry," I said and left...

Only I couldn't leave. I sat outside on a park bench chastising myself.

{If you hadn't asked them to go she wouldn't be hurt!

If you hadn't chose to be selfish and walked with her she wouldn't be in this situation.}

Thoughts like those swam around my head.

{You're useless, why do you even exist?}

Finally... I left.

The next day I didn't go to school, my parents had heard and tried to offer sympathy.

I pretended to be asleep.

I took up my cell to text Kate but couldn't, when other members of the student council called to check up on me I didn't answer.

I couldn't.

{Useless...}

We had arrived. The first part of the plan was for me to get a visual on the place we were gonna break into not that anyone cared about security anymore.

There wasn't anyone to care about stuff like that and even if there was they would probably welcome a break-in from 'normal people'.

I was at to top wrung inside a manhole. slowly I pushed up and moved the lid aside and looked around.

The coast was clear.

I pulled myself up and out. I was in the middle of a parking lot. Trolleys littered the area and no cars were in sight.

Nothing to hide behind.

I crouched and moved as quickly as I could My hand over my silenced pistol at my waist.

Soon I reached the structure. It was supposed to have a few underground levels and the equipment eve wanted to get was on the lowest.

I stuck close to the wall and continued moving as quickly as I could all the while looking around to see if I'd been marked.

At the corner of the building was an entrance or rather an exit that could be used as an entrance as long as you had the key. I didn't have the key, but I had a lock pick and the know how. Hopefully it was enough.

Luckily it was just a three pin tumbler lock system and soon the door opened to a dark interior the light from out side shun in the dark, dust floated the through the beam.

I slipped in and closed the door.

Darkness, as the light left the room pitch black.

I took out my pistol and a small flashlight I had in my pocket and placed it over the gun the narrow beam now pointed in the direction that the gun pointed. I know I was only supposed to check to see if any of 'them' were around the building but I couldn't put eve in danger anymore.

Not after I had failed to protect... Them

The scream was still fresh in my mind.
