Chapter 19: Chapter 19: First Day
"Well, here we are."
Subaru, Kazuma and Aqua arrived at the construction site. The first thing Subaru did was glance everywhere to make sure nothing would happen. After determining that the site was pretty safe he ushered everyone into the site to meet their new boss.
"So you're our newbies."
The boss was a big muscle guy and looked at all of us with an observing face.
"Do you know how to paint or use a hammer?"
"…Yeah, why wouldn't we? You both can do that right?"
"Yeah."
"Yup."
"Then you're perfect! As long as you don't get killed I don't have any paperwork to fill out so go and find something that you three can work on. There should be some smaller groups of workers all over the place, you can split up if you want. I'll be over here if you need me."
The site consisted of lots of wood and metal. The team was brought here to build a large building with one requirements from the client being a large basement so they were digging deep into the ground. As to what the building would be used for…No one knew. They were only given the blueprints and told to build.
"So now begins my not so awesome isekai life that I was promised by the useless goddess over here."
"I'm not useless! I bet I could build everything here in day if you weren't around!"
Kazuma and Aqua were once again quarreling with eachother which made Subaru feel even more uneasy. He kept thinking of every possible accident that could happen in a work site. Being crushed by bricks, stabbed by metal, buried by dirt, falling down a hole and so on. He tried pushing his thoughts aside but he felt as if something near him was making him think of the possible deaths that awaited him and his friends.
"Subaru?"
"Huh?"
"We were calling to you but you weren't responding. You okay?"
"Y-Yeah. What'd you need me for?"
"Aqua and I were planning on splitting up to show who's the useless one here so we were wondering if you'll be going off on your own."
"Sure. It would probably be best that way. So I'll go over this way and you two go those ways. Sound good?"
"Sure. I just need to prove to this useless goddess just how useful she really is. Which is entirely and utterly useless."
"I am not useless you just wait and see!"
The two went their separate ways and Subaru looked around for the least risky job possible. He found one where it was just painting over the exposed bricks so Subaru chose to do this.
'It's nothing compared to the undead battle…But I'd prefer this much more over dying a bunch.'
It was a long day of work. Kazuma and Aqua were surprisingly even in terms of which group considered the member to be most useful which just led to Kazuma and Aqua bullying eachother even more.
Subaru was happy that no one got hurt but he still couldn't get rid of the feeling that something was going to happen. After they returned to their barely paid stables they saw Darkness and Megumin sitting on the hay. They had completed the quest they set out for the day and with that they had enough money to survive on for now.
"We'll have to spend some nights here but it won't be too long before we're back to living in an inn. With actual beds…Food…Warmth…Only until our first paychecks. We must be strong until then…"
The stable was crowded with how many party members there were and Darkness seemed to be embarrassed or hiding something. Subaru didn't pay no mind because of her normal ways of acting.
With that the first day of work was finished and it would continue again for the foreseeable future…

SixSenses Sorry about the 2 week gap, school started for me and I learned on the first day I had summer work I never did/never told about, so I just spent the last 2. Weeks doing 2 and a half months worth of work of social studies…It was very boring. But it’s finished now so now I can go back to focusing on this. Also team gear will win this splatfest!
