Chapter 4: Chapter Three

Three hours was left to launch time. Mike finished up setting up the house, turning off the all the taps, making sure that all the doors and windows were secured and checking to make sure that all non-essential systems in the house had been turned off.

He placed the VR headset on and laid down on his bed, taking in a deep breath he pressed the button on the side of the headset to initiate the initial setup. It was just like falling asleep, transitioning to a dream seamlessly without delay. After a few seconds, there was a change in the darkness that surrounded him. A blue screen popped up in front of him, "New user detected, bind this headset to the user?" "Yes", from reading the manual he knew there were several steps he needed to take before he could enter the game. The first one was binding the headset to him, and the next was a full body scan. "Binding successful, initiating full body scan". After several seconds his perception changed. He was no longer a bodiless being but could see his hands and feet as well as the rest of his body.

"Please move around to get familiar with the virtual body". Mike took a few test steps whilst moving his hands. After getting used to small movements he began running around the empty area, the only object marking a change in surroundings footprints where he had been initially. "Initiate game, BattleGround?" "Yes."

Everything dissolved into a swirling vortex of colors, hurtling him forward. He came to a stop in space surrounded by swirling galaxies and nebulas.

<Welcome to BattleGround>

<Please select User name>

The prompt jolted him out of admiring the breathtaking environment he found himself in. Hmm, I don't want to be known. Standing out in this game would bring me trouble in the real world, but at the same time, I want to create a better future for my sister and me. Anonymous, yep that is what I want to be.

"Anonymous"

<Is your user name Anonymous?>

"Yes"

<User name set as Anonymous>

<Set Avatar appearance>

Within the void of space, a holographic representation of himself appeared. Short grey and wavy hair surrounded an oval face. The skin was tanned from working in the sun for long periods. Sharp black eyes and thin lips with a small nose defined his face. He was of average height with well-defined muscles acquired from all the physical labor he participated in.

I don't want to be recognized so ...

"Change hair color to red and set and deviation of ten percent from my original appearance."

The resultant appearance was neither handsome nor ugly rather a face that could be lost within a crowd.

<Is this your final appearance?>

"Yes."

<Initial setup has been completed, BattleGround will start in 4 hours. Transferring Player Anonymous to Personal Pod.>

<Please take note: Player now has access to essential information for BattleGround, no information can be posted outside the game penalties will be applied if violated>

Once again he was sent hurtling forward, this time through the universe. Galaxies and nebulas flashed by as he came closer and closer to his destination. Finally, he saw the earth from space. The once green and blue planet had changed. The green of the Earth was no longer as prominent as it was before and the blue of the seas and oceans now covered more space. It seemed the land had been consumed by the oceans and seas.

<Randomizing spawn point, Thank you for playing>

That was the last message he saw before everything turned dark once again.

When he work up, he found himself in a pod. At the corner of his eyes, he saw a blinking light. When he focused his attention on it, it expanded into a holographic interface.

There were a different number of tabs on the interface, but the one that caught his attention first was labeled 'READ ME.' Following what he did first to open up the interface the first time, he concentrated on the tab and as he expected it opened up.

BASIC INFORMATION

BattleGround is not your usual VRMMORPG, there are no classes either for primary or secondary, what replaces this are Occupations. Since it is set in the future where extraterrestrials have invaded and taken over a large portion of the Earth the Occupation one has to pick from vary from the normal Occupations such as doctors, engineers, chefs, and soldiers to occupations that existed in our histories, such as hunters, blacksmith, and herbalist. It should be taken note that some Occupations are more battle oriented than others. However, all Occupations can be tweaked to be combat capable. This is up to each individual to comprehend on their own.

Since there are no classes, skills are not obtained with the Occupation, but rather groups of skills give rise to the different Occupation found within BattleGround. An example, skills such as Arrow Mastery, Tracking, and Gathering together with other skills will provide the individual access to the Hunter Occupation. An individual can have more than one occupation at a single time. All depends on the different types of skills that one cultivates.

Finally, everyone should be aware that they will be no equipment found as loots. The only loots obtainable from defeated enemies are raw materials.

All in-game currency can be converted out to credit but not from credit to in-game currency. This provision is to maintain fairness to all players.

Mike mulled over the information that he had just received. The entire game was going to be based around how well you could use the skills one had. One skill could be used in different ways by different people. With the lack of restrictions that classes brought to bare within a game the possible combinations were very large. A small grin found its way on his face, laughter bubbling its way out of his chest. As long as the information needed to use the skills were similar in some way to the real world he could learn quite a few things from within the game and apply it in real life.

When that thought came to mind it was apparent it would also work in reverse, those who were skilled in real life would gain an advantage. After further thought, the benefit would not be too significant as their expertise might end up limiting their growth.

The timer was left with one hour. The small grin had transformed into a full-blown smile. He couldn't wait to start his journey, all his hopes and despair in the real world he would bring it to bear.
