Chapter 31: 31. Overkill
"Hello Agent Coulson it's been a while, how have you been," said a voice easily recognized by Coulson, May, and Skye
"Raina! It Director Coulson now" said Coulson with a calm voice as he signaled Skye to start tracking the call.
"Oh! Then I must Congratulate you, Director Coulson, sorry if you felt disrespected that wasn't my intention." Raina said
"Well, Thank you but I am sure you didn't call me to just chat with me so what's the reason for this call Raina," asked Coulson
"Oh well you see last night, Creel stole from me a ring that helped against the adverse effects the Obelisk was having on him and I didn't like the fact, in fact, I was hurt so I called you to inform you about him," Raina replied
"I am not sure how you helping Creel helps me," Coulson said
"Oh don't worry as you see unbeknownst to him, the ring had a tracking device. I am thinking of giving it to you so do you think it would help you, Director Coulson" asked Raina
"It would but again, I don't believe that you are helping us for no reason," Coulson said
"I already told you the reason, Director Coulson I didn't like the fact that he stole from me and I hope you punish him for it" states Raina before disconnecting the call right before Skye tracks her location.
"Shit! She must be counting the seconds to disconnect at the 29th second" Skye said as she failed to find the exact location of Raina and only found the area she was in which wouldn't be helpful as they didn't have enough men to cover the whole area like before to find her out.
Coulson then received the information from Raina about the tracker and he headed it to Skye to track him.
When it was found out that Creel will be meeting his handler to pass the Obelisk, Coulson called for a briefing and started giving orders. The mission was a simple snatch and grab. They would wait and see who was Creel's handler and after finding out his identity snatch the Obelisk from him.
It was decided that May would be leading the team with Skye and Trip following her.
Grant also warned them to stay away from Creel as they still don't have any way to deal with him.
The briefing soon broke up and after a perfunctory "Be careful" Grant headed to his room to attend to other things. Since he wasn't clear for the missions he could only stay in for now and decided to hit the Gym as just testing his rubber powers wasn't enough he needed to hit something too.
Mack, seeking help to reverse-engineer the cloaking technology, finds Fitz wanting to stop Creel. Together, they decode Fitz's old work to find a solution.
It was the Overkill Device that is designed to emit intense sonic vibrations that are capable of remotely discharging or destroying most conventional, combustion-based guns as well as a wide range of explosive weapons. The device is mainly composed of a main component, a small cylindrical device circled by arcing pipes, which generates the sonic vibrations. Originally, the main component was augmented by a system of large, winding pipes that could intensify and transmit the sonic vibrations over a large distance and allow it to affect larger targets. The main component itself can be combined with an independent power source and used as a handheld weapon.
"So what do we need to do?" asked Mack
"We need to overload Carl Creel's power to absorb and replicate inanimate material. A number of small spikes will be needed to be added to the end and the device was so that it can be stabbed into Creel after which it will discharge sonic pulses through his body that disrupts his abilities," stated Fitz
"That's brilliant Turbo," said Mack nicknaming Fitz
"Turbo?" asked Fitz in confusion
"Yes your nickname, now let's finish this weapon and hand it to Coulson after which you are gonna help me with the Cloaking device," said Mack
"umm... okay," said Fitz forgetting the fact that he was just nicknamed.
Grant came out of his room and walked towards the gym when he saw Hunter approach the team. Remembering what's going to happen Grant couldn't help but bite his lips to stop himself from smiling. Hunter Ice's Skye, Trip, and even May to try to kill Creel only to be unsuccessful in it and even got himself in May's shitlist for icing her.
Hunter was good in a fight and was both direct and funny. Grant liked him even in the show and was sad when he was cut off from the show. Even now other than the team, he was the only one who talked with him without holding any prejudice against him. That's how Hunter became one of Grant's friends even though he wasn't currently being honest with the team and Coulson.
Grant slowed his steps as he passed the team just in time to hear Hunter state "I will be good" as he gave Coulson a three-fingered mock salute "Scouts Honor."
He couldn't resist. "You were never a Boy Scout," Grant said with a smirk on his face.
Hunter threw him a betrayed look, and then turned back to Coulson and said "Please Sir. I owe Izzy one"
Grant knew that Coulson would let him join as no matter how much he tries to copy Fury in the end he is Coulson, the emotional director of SHIELD.
As Gra t entered the Gym, he thought it would be good if the team knew that Bakshi was going to be the handler of Creel, it may help Coulson in giving Grant a chance in the field as staying in playground was really getting to him now.
As Grant was walking towards Coulson's office he heard Fitz's agitated voice "Yes yes we did it"
"Everything ok, over here," asked Grant calmly as if he didn't know what Fitz and Mack were doing even though he already knew and even saw them work through his Observation Haki.
"Ward, You remember the overkill device, the one we got on that... that... mission?" asked Fitz looking relieved as he held the modified Overkill device. Mack standing by his side holding an iPad.
"You mean our mission to South Ossetia?" Grant asked playing along with Fitz.
"Yes, the one we were supposed to disable but ended up taking with us"
