Chapter 2: The Inn

As I close the door to my room behind me, the light of the early morning sun weighs a heavy toll on my sight making it almost impossible to see. The window at the end of the hall has no curtains, so the sun was fully visible as it slowly continued to rise in the sky.

"Why wouldn't there be curtains, does that mean that the people who stay here aren't affected by all this much light during the morning." I pondered. "If I owned this building there would be at least curtain placed in front of that window at all times."

Honestly though there isn't much to see here anyway, to my far left in front of me is a staircase leading downwards, with this seemingly being the top flour of the build. A dark blue carpet lined the middle floor leading all throughout the entire hallway, with three wooden doors lined on both the left and right sides of my position. As I continue to walk down the hall, the visuals stay monotonous, with the only break up being a painting of a polished steel sword, or the occasional number engraved on each door relating to their respective room numbers. I quickly turn around to remember which door I came from to see about memorizing my room number.

"306, got it." I whisper quietly. "Thank god I remembered."

Clearly this seems like an inn, as considering all of the rooms and standard pictures. The best course of action to take would be to look for the receptionist desk, in order to ask what my situation is in terms of being allowed to stay in that room. Since this seems like the top floor, the receptionist desk should hypothetically be on the bottom floor of the inn, like in most cases. I begin to head down the staircase towards the bottom floor. As I walk past each floor, I begin to see people walking in and out of their rooms, dressed in various fantasy style clothing from cloth shirts and pants, to straight up battle armor, with each person having a weapon strapped on their back, whether it's a crossbow or a long sword. With every person I pass, I begin to realize more and more that I'm no wear near where I used to be, or at least, where I was in my dream. Getting lower and lower, I also noticed that the temperature seems to be rising, and I was unsure of wether it was due to there being more people being cramped on these lower floors, or if it was because of the various lit candles spread out among the walls of the lower floors, but I suppose both could be held accountable.

When I finally make my way towards the bottom floor, the staircase comes to an open room filled with carved wooden tables and chairs, and a nice wooden flooring placed underneath all the furniture. It seems to be the main dining hall of the inn, with a doorway to another room in the wall on the opposite side of the room. I make my way over towards the doorway, and as I walk through, I instantly see a wooden front desk looking area, with a nice young girl behind it. But before I could utter a single word to her, she yelled out a phrase that seemed like it was about to change my entire life as I knew it.

"Hey, that guy is awake you can talk to him now!"

Okay, so I might have been a little dramatic, but I know that now I can finally get some answers about this world. Obviously someone who is able to survive well enough in this world to care about saving someone like me (who doesn't even know his own name) clearly knows a lot about this world and will give me advice on at least how to get started.

"He'll be right over, so just wait here."

I follow the receptionist's instructions, and wonder what to do while waiting for whoever she had called. After a second, I take another glance at the receptionist, which I felt like after a while turned into outright staring, but I couldn't help it. She was goddamn hot, with her oversized rack looming over the desk in front of her like two moons. Damn, black hair sprawling down her gentle back, and light blue eyes quickly averting my gaze as though she was embarrassed due to my constant staring while I was doing my inner monologue. Her body is tightly wrapped in a cute black dress, lined with hints of white along the sleeves, which I presumed to be her work uniform. Honestly, she's gotta be my first adventure in this new life.

Just then, as things seem to be at the pinnacle in terms of awkward silence, a large man shoved his way through the doorway I had just came from. He was tall, and very muscular, and for some reason had no shirt on. His brown cloth pants ran all the way down to his ankles, and he sported a long brown beard, with long brown hair covering his head. He turned to my direction, he green eyes in an almost shocked kind of look, and said in a loud booming voice -

"Ah, so your finally awake huh. Well, come with me and I'll have a talk with ya about this place, and most importantly who you are."

I got no choice but to follow him, he'd clearly be able to snap my neck if I say no.

We end up in what I presume to be his office, accessed from a locked side door in the kitchen behind the dining hall. It's just a simple office with the standard items such as a wooden desk with tons of drawers, two chairs on either side of the desk, and on the wall behind the desk, a picture of the this guy and a bunch of other people I hadn't seen before in the inn, though I'll admit I wasn't looking too thoroughly at everyone that walked past. Then, he started asking questions to me.

"So, what is your name?"

"I don't know."

I try to respond as honestly as possible, but it's hard to look honest when you don't know the most basic of questions about yourself.

"Where do you come from?"

Yet another question I don't know.

"Ok, I get it. You must not want to talk as you might get in trouble or something, or you truly don't know because you got your memory erased."

I "got my memory erased.". Is he implying that there might be people in this world with the power to do that. I decide it's best that I just tell him everything I know so he won't make any wild guesses about me. I speak to him with the most serious look I could possibly muster on my face.

"I don't know anything. My life, this world, it's all a mystery to me. I woke up here, I walked down stairs, I saw that cute girl working behind the desk, and then I ended up here. That is honestly my entire life, everything I can remember."

He pauses to reflect on what I said, then he decides to speak again.

"All I know about you is that you were lying on the ground right in front of my inn. I decided to take you in after just seeing you block my front entrance like that."

"Oh, I'm sorry for any trouble I caused."

"I'm not blaming you for causing trouble, I was just worried about you. But Shayla, the girl at the front desk, she was even more worried than me. In fact, she was the one who suggested we take you to the farthest open room on the top floor so that you have an easier time resting up."

I felt more embarrassed than before, but I also felt a kind of relief. Before he says anything else though, I quickly change the subject.

"So, can you explain what this world is?"

I wait with bated breath, I have no idea what he would possibly say next.

"Of course, maybe it'll help jog the old memory. Basically this is a world filled with mystical monsters who try to kill people. Goblins, orcs, elves, hell even demons and dragons. And that's only a fraction of the races besides us humans."

Huh, so there are fantasy like monsters here. Wait, how do I even know what "fantasy like" is supposed to mean. He continues on.

"In this world, each living being has a class given to them upon their birth, and there a dozens of different classes with some classes being more common for different races than others."

Wait, so I could come across an orc that's like a tank class, I better hope I have a decent enough class to counteract something powerful like that. I then speak up to find out how to know what my class is.

"How do I find out my class?"

"Oh, it's quite simple. You start by lifting you right hand towards your eyes, with the inside of your palm facing you."

He proceeds to do all the motions he just explained as a physical demonstration.

"You then say the phrase, GIVE ME MY STATS, and then you will get a small blue screen, with the top line being your name, the next line being your name, the lines grouped together underneath that being your your level and various stats for different elements, and finally your list of all the abilities you can use associated with your specific class. Keep in mind that when it comes towards abilities, different races can have the same class, but different abilities. Classes are hereditary and depending on the class, abilities can be bred to be given to a class that might not have that ability normally, or have certain abilities be taken away, but the class that a child might have is pretty much fifty - fifty what it will be when two parents have different classes."

Huh, okay I think I got it all. I guess there'd be no harm in trying this out right here to see what happens. I lift my right wrist to my eye level.

"Okay, give me my stats." I say in a plain tone.

All of a sudden, a blue screen appears in front of my eyes on top of my wrist, with no border of technology surrounding it. The first thing I do is look at my name. And, it's blank. Nothing there, just the _______ thing that you'd see when there isn't an answer.

"Huh, well no worries. You can always register a name later, data is always being updated every time you open the screen."

The inn keeper is looking over my shoulder with interest as he spots something more interesting than not having a name on the screen, my class. I quickly look back at my screen, and under class it states, Thief. Oh, I almost start to cry as every ounce of hopelessness swells in my body. A thief, that doesn't seem like a strong class that'll allow me to stay alive in this world.

"A thief class huh, that is probably the rarest class out here in the human race, but you do meet a few here or there every so often in this world so it's nothing to cry over. Though most thieves I have known have an incredibly hard time fighting since they have low stats in many areas."

I check my screen for the stats that I personally have. When I look, my level is 1, of course, and my attack, defense, and magic are all 5, the only things that stands out are my health, which is 40, my speed, which is 10, and my grip strength, which is 14. Hold up, grip strength? What kinda stat is that.

"What's grip strength, do you know?" I ask the inn keeper.

"That's a stat that basically means how well you can grabs something with your hand, though in the case of the thief class, I'm not sure how it would be."

Well, I guess I should start thinking about leveling up in order to raise my stats. Wait I don't know what to do to be raise my level. I'm sure the inn keeper must have information on this aspect too.

"So uh, how do I level up and get my stats higher?"

"Oh it's kind of a bit more complicated than you think. You see each stat you have basically has their own individual level system, in a sense the more you use that stat, the higher it becomes. For example, if you get attack a lot and take a lot of damage, you defense will begin to rise, or if you use healing potions to heal you health, the number of health points you have will rise. You level basically acts as a catalyst for all you stats, as the level acts as sort of like an experience booster for leveling up your different stats. If your at level 1, you may need to take ten or so hits to go from a 5 in defense to a 6, but if you we were a level 5, you would only need to take about one or two hits to reach a 6 in defense."

Ah I get it, so the higher you level, the faster you can get stronger.

"So then, what about raising my level?"

"You can do that by gaining experience from monsters, either by killing them, or just defeating them in general, both yield the same amount of experience."

"Defeat or kill?"

"Monster basically issues a challenge when you start battling them, and making them acknowledge how strong you is known as a defeat. But most monsters are very stubborn, and will never back down during the fight, leading most people to end up battling to the death every time they face monster."

"But what can I do to have them acknowledge my strength?"

"By stealing their most prized possession, every monster and human has one, something they hold deeply to their hearts with lots of emotional value. Figuring out what it is will always be hard though so you really have to pay attention, and of course they won't just give it to you. You personally have to figure out a way to steal it from them."

Man, that sounds like a lot of work just to get one level, no wonder people will just end up killing them. But I think I know everything I need to in order to start my adventure. But wait, what about equipment.

"What do I do about weapons and armor?"

"There is a black smith shop across the street from here, he sells weapons and armor. But he does charge for his work so you'll need some money to get by starting out."

The inn keeper hands me a small brown pouch, with ten gold coins.

"You're just gonna give this to me?" I ask.

"I think of it as a starting payment to get you on your feet, besides you'll pay it all back renting out your room to stay in for each week right?"

He gives me a hearty laugh as I begin to walk out the room, determined to head straight towards the shop across the street to get started on my journey as just the thought of adventuring this unknown land sounds so exciting. As I walk out the door, the inn keeper gives me one last send off.

"Come to me anytime you'd like if you need any more information on something you don't know, my name is Garth."

"Ok, I'll definitely see you around Garth."

I jumped right out the office door, ready to get started with my new life.

CREATORS' THOUGHTS
Zantharos Zantharos

Ha ha funny two month gap, I feel really bad honestly but I wanted to think about the direction of the entire series as a whole, and I decided that tons of world building would be really fun, again sorry about the two month gap but I was just so lost in where to continue in between these first few chapters, and the very end of the series. I do plan on making other series as well, but I haven't thought of any good ideas yet so I'll just wait on that at least until this series gets rolling.
