Chapter 3: The View From The Top
Saturday
The day of the practice match had arrived. Today was a big day because it would determine whether or not Hinata and Kageyama would make the team.
Hinata was anxious to play, Kageyama was not sure how he felt, and Kenji was excited.
Team A
- Kenji Hiroki, Wing Spiker
- Shoyo Hinata,?
- Tobio Kageyama, Setter
Team B
- Daichi Sawamura, Opposite
- Kei Tsukishima, Middle Blocker
- Tadashi Yamaguchi, Middle Blocker
The gym was set up and what you could feel was the cold. Both teams were stretching and getting ready to play and Daichi explained how they were going to play.
Kenji's team was serving first.

As soon as the whistle blew, Kenji threw the ball into the air and ran.` Everyone had the same thought: 'Jump serve!?'
Kenji hit the ball between Daichi and Yamaguchi with speed and power, but it was ruled out.

'Damn it,' Kenji said to himself.
"Don't mind" Hinata yelled
"Kageyama," Kenji said.
"Yes?"
Kenji approached him and asked, "Can you set me a pipe?"
Kageyama thought to himself as he looked at Kenji, 'He can already do a pipe attack?' 'How far can he jump?' He didn't know much about Kenji other than the fact that he was good.
"Of course," Kageyama said.
BEEEP
Daichi served the ball to Kenji, who picked it up and placed it right where the setter was. He waited a second before running up and jumping behind the line, and Kageyama placed it exactly where he wanted it.
Tsukishima jumped to block him, but the attack was too fast for him to get a grip on. He certainly didn't expect a pipe attack from a first-year student.
"YEAH"

"WOAHH, Kenji, what was that?!?" Hinata asked out loud, springing directly in front of Kenji's face.
"That's what you call a pipe attack, idiot!" Kageyama yelled.
"Hmph. Nobody asked you, dude," Hinata grumbled.
"HUH! "What was that?" Kageyama yelled as he attempted to attack Hinata.
The match went on with Kenji easily picking up the ball and Kageyama setting it to him to rack up the points.

"Hey, Kageyama," said Kenji.
"Yeah Kenji?" Kageyama responded
"I think it's about time you went to Hinata as well." "His skills may be mediocre, but he's quick," Kenji said.
Kageyama looked at Kenji, dumbfounded.
"What I mean is, try using his speed to get around the blockers. Bring out the King's toss," Kenji stated
When he heard Kenji say those words, Kageyama flinched, but quickly gathered himself and said, "I'll try."
"Hinata" Kageyama yelled
"Huh"
"Run to a spot where there aren't any blockers and I'll put the ball in your hands"
"What?"
"Just do as I say" Kageyama said
The whistle blew and Tsukishima served the ball. Kenji picked it up and it went to Kageyama.
Hinata dashed to the right side, where there were no blockers, as soon as Kenji received it.
When the ball got to Kageyama, he looked around. Looking at the blockers. at Kenji, and at Hinata.
He thought to himself,
'This position'
'This timing'
'This angle'
'It's perfect!'
Kageyama placed the ball directly in front of Hinata, who spiked it.
Everyone in the gym, including Kenji, fell silent for a brief moment.
'I knew it was fast, but seeing it in person is something else.' Kenji was thinking to himself.
"I Hit it!" Hinata yelled
"You hit it?" Tsukishima said "You're making a big deal out of nothing"
"Oi...Just...Now...Hinata had his eyes closed." Daichi said
"What!!!"
Hinata's spiking with his eyes closed stunned everyone. It wouldn't have been such a big deal if they hadn't known he had his eyes closed, but the fact that it was closed and he was still able to spike it shocked everyone.
Of course, some thought it was a fluke. It's insane to close your eyes and be able to spike the ball
The match continued, with Hinata and Kageyama attempting to perfect the quick attack. They were able to launch some attacks, but the majority of them were unsuccessful.
The score was 23-20 in favor of Kenji's team. After the duo failed to attack, it was Daichi's turn to serve.
Daichi hit the ball, and Hinata, to their surprise, picked it up. Kageyama got under the ball and tossed it to Kenji.
Kenji jumped and was met by two blockers, Tsukishima and Yamaguchi.
Kenji waited, holding his breath and arching his back.
The two blockers' eyes widened as they fell to the ground first, and Kenji was still hanging in the air, and soon after he spiked it hard, sending it flying off their hands and into the wall.

"What the hell?" exclaimed Tanaka.
"Wow, that's some insane hang time," Ennoshita exclaimed.
The people in the gym were shocked once more. Who exactly is this first year? He had an incredible vert, could jump serve, and had an insane hangtime.
Karasuno was fortunate to have such a treasure.
It was Kenji's turn to serve again. Kenji ran up, picked up the ball, and served. Daichi recieved it, but it was returned to the other side.
"Sorry!" exclaimed Daichi.
Kenji received it, sent it to Kageyama, and ran to the center.
Kenji jumped from behind again, ready to spike.
Expecting a pipe attack, Tsukishima and Yamaguchi jumped with him, determined to stop him.
When Kageyama saw this, he smirked and sent it to Hinata, who was ready for the attack.
Both Yamaguchi and Tsukishima were thinking, 'What the hell!'
The others who were watching were also taken aback. :)
They assumed that the ball would have been given to Kenji because he was the best attacker he had, and in situations like this, you would give the ball to your best player.
When this happened, Hinata had a smile on his face and was thinking to himself.
'Before my eyes, it blocks my Path. A High High Wall.'
'What sort of scene is on the other side? How can I see it?'
'By myself, I will never be able to see it.'
'This is. The view from the top'
