Chapter 41: Gift
Pewder City was the home to many digging and mining sites along with many locations for finding many types of rock and fairy Pokémon within the mountains, tunnels or caves.
One or the more memorable places was the museum which was home to many fossils and the fossil machine which could restore ancient fossils.
Many arrangements of fossils, old bones and stones had been on display to the public and it was possible for those that took part in the digging or mining in the city to have what they had gained examined and carefully restored.
Some rare pieces would be purchased on the spot by enthusiastic researchers while others would leave with a rare stone or restored fossil.
Kimi was not an absolute master at identifying fossils and stones but she know the difference between real ones and fakes.
If she spotted something that had been overlooked online and had been put on sale for a cheap price then she would purchase it right away whether it was things like a kings rock or something else that was useful or was worth the money spent and could provide her with some profits.
Kimi had kept in contact with old P and had sent over some sketches to help better identify some things she was looking for.
Once unearthed, not every fossil would be noticed for its potential and would be kept away or sold to others as a weird looking stone or collectors item.
It was not difficult to have something sent over from other regions but it was more complicated if they were purchased through illegal channels and were required not to be easily tracked by others.
Since it was more difficult to arrange and to get them much sooner before leaving Pewder City, the range of searching had to be lowered and the means of acquiring them had to be ordinary.
Kimi had no need for anything specific unless her dark team was in need of something specific to make up for the missing places and where there were several weaknesses within the team but there was still room for growth with other methods if she could not gain a quick and cheap option so soon.
Kimi and her father were stood side by side within the museum and waited in a waiting area as the people inside a room were running around the room.
Several pieces of paper were printed out and those inside picked them up to read them while there were several flashing lights within a machine.
The commotion inside died down and the machine had begun to open up and the door was opened.
The researcher smiled towards Kimi and her father. "You can come inside now. It was successful."
Kimi turned to her father and smiled. "You are lucky."
Her father smiled bashfully and ran inside. "Thanks for the present daughter."
If there was not anything that could provide assistance right away then it was better to use normal and legal means to help her father.
She had helped him to gain some Pokémon and helped in his training but she had not really got him a real gift.
Kimi could hear the Pokédex inside as it explained details on the newly restored fossil.
"Kabuto the shellfish Pokémon.."
After the Kabuto had been stabilised and calmed from its state of panic and confusion, the sound of a Pokéball catching it had followed and her father emerged holding it in his hands with a big grin on his face. "This is a great gift. I will raise it well."
Kimi rolled her eyes and pouted. "Just take this as a thanks for going along with my whims."
She did not wish to admit it so easily but Kimi did have some feeling for her father and did enjoy her time together with him.
Even if some of her plans did rely on him cooperating with her and her motives were not exactly pure in the way she intended to use him to start up a business venture while she went on her own journey, they would still be bound by blood and the bonds they had formed over a short time together.
If the relationship had started as quite distant and based on the interests on Kimi then that relationship had become better since they had left Viridian City.
Her father on the other hand did not notice her change and just thought that Kimi had a change of mind to become an officer and had started to have some ideas of her own.
He found that Kimi had started to show excellent talent in training Pokémon and could learn things quickly so he supported her decision and wished to aid her in her dream not realising that the Kimi he knew was not the one he had remembered.
It was in his and Kimi's best interests that the truth about her rebirth and regression be kept secret from him and she had used many things she knew from before her regression to help overcome any awkwardness between them.
It was a strange situation where they were family but technically she was just a soul from another world residing in his daughter's body so it was a very sensitive topic that could not be brought up without having their relationship broken.
Kimi did have feelings towards her father and did not wish to see him hurt by learning his daughter was no longer in the world with him so she had decided to play her role as best as she could.
Even if the business idea for him was somewhat selfish, it would get him out of Veridian City and would provide him a better life so she had no regrets in her decision.
Kimi walked outside with her father after paying the restoration fees then checked the new messages in her group chat.
Her eyes went across one which had been directed towards her.
[ViridianJenny: Hey! You are still in Pewder City correct? If you are leaving soon then I have a request for you. Are you available to take it?]
[KimiJenny: I will be leaving very soon. What is the request?]
It took a while to respond until one finally came which had a detailed description of the mission and what was required.
[KimiJenny: So undercover work it is.. I can do that.]
[ViridianJenny: Stay in contact and report if you run into any troubles.]
[Kimi Jenny: Got it.]
Kimi lead her father back to the inn where they started packing everything, Kimi made a quick trip to get her hair cut and styled before she got changed into ordinary clothes and a beanie which covered most of her hair after a lot of it had been cut.
Her long wavy teal hair had been cut shorter and was styled to have her fringe a little shorter so it did not hinder her vision while a lot of her hair at the sides and on the top was pushed back into a short ponytail.
The back was still curly and travelled a little past her neck but was not as messy or as thick as before.
A couple of simple hair clips held her hair in place and as she had removed the ponytail temporarily, the hair settles down at the back and sides to reveal a slightly layered style which was quickly covered up with the beanie.
Her current specifications fit her needs for various identities whether it was her normal appearance, undercover work or as her alter ego as it was easy to hide her hair colour when it was required and her hair was not too long or thick to be noticed by anyone.
Her wavy teal hair was one of the things which made it easier to identify her as a Jenny so she had given herself a fresh new look to help less people identify her as one of them.
Her blood red eyes and tanned skin helped to not be easily identified as one of them even if she did look almost identical to them in many places so styling or being able to hide her hair helped to avoid being recognised as a Jenny when she did not wish to be.
Her new life was not one of an officer or a Jenny so she did not wish for others to look at her as one of them once again.
The haircut was just another small measure to stake a claim on her own identity and to avoid some future troubles associated with her family ties even if it was not a completely effective measure to be taken.
It was a small step on her path to independence and to live more for herself instead of others.
