The next day Olaf and Sigurd traveled and made it to the village of kaupang, where the arm ring ceremony was going to happen.while walking through the village they see a familiar face ' is that you Harold my brother' Olaf shouted,the man turned around and with a smile replied 'yes brother it's been awhile seen we last saw each other and Sigurd your all grown up and ready to be a man' as the large brother walk to Olaf and his son and continued speaking ' the jarl will be judge to crimes that have happened in the village and I heard there was a death over property in village' as the walked to a massive hall that was well carpeted and had fine artisans which was observed by Sigurd which was interrupted by a shout of 'silence' by the jarls guard as the jarl walked in and sat on his throne 'bring in the accused' jarl Ketil Kalv said 'Ake you have pleaded guilty to the charges of stealing,so tomorrow you will run the gauntlet with stones as punishment' said jarl ' yes,thank lord '. Replied Ake as there is a chorus of boos with the crowd 'let it be known there is a fine to pay for anyone who does not throw object at the accused tomorrow' Sid by the jarl advisor 'bring in the next accused' shouted the jarl,
Sigurd actually catches a glimpse of the man brought into the hall in chains by the house of the jarl. The young man has a pleasant expression, keeps his head high and does not avert his eyes and in the crowd voices cloud be heard saying 'there he is' 'murderer' 'burn him' after which the jarl spoke 'rollo ivarson you have been accused of the murder of Canute Dag how do you plead?' 'It wasn't murder, lord. I killed him in self-defence. It was he who attacked me' replied rollo. 'Liar!' Shouted by woman who is part of the dead man's family, standing in a group close to the defendant.' 'If it wasn't murder, why did you not declare your crime to the first person you met afterwards, as the law obliges? In fact, you passed by several houses before you reported it.' Jarl claimed. 'I thought the relatives of the
dead man might be living in them.' Rollo replied while he looked over at the woman and the dead man's family.
'The law allows houses in such never a third.
you to pass two circumstances but never a third' replied jarl after which a family member of Canute shouted 'You felt guilty. You went to his house and murdered my brother in cold blood.'
There was a Fresh uproar. Sigurd struggled to keep an eye-line on the accused. Olaf notices, lifts him up.
'It's not true. We argued about some
land. He pulled out a knife' said rollo
To be interrupted by Canute woman 'You're lying! You wanted that land
for yourself. You're a liar and a coward' 'Who says I'm a coward? I'm no
coward.' Shouted rollo after which the crowd joined in the shouting,leading the jarl to bang his fist on the table and shouting 'Silence! All of you show some respect.' They fall silent. Earl looks at rollo, 'As the normal procedures were not followed, this killing cannot be atoned for by compensating the victim's family.' Jarl said leading the family shouting their approval, raise their fists aggressively towards the defendant.
'Murder is a dishonorable act among
our people, rollo ivarson , committed in secret, unacknowledged and very likely to set in train a cycle of revenge killings, which would also involve your own family.' Said the jarl He looks up at the assembly. And continues 'I ask all of you how you find the accused. If you think him guilty, raise your arms. Your decision must be unanimous.'
Quickly, everyone raises their hands. But the Jarl hesitates, for someone has not. Olaf realizes who it is and squeezes Sigurd's thigh. Sigurd raises his hand. 'Rollo ivarson, you have been found guilty of murder. How would you like to die?' The jarl said A beat. Rollo looks round the room in that same cool way, as if he was above it all. And says 'By beheading, lord.'
The jarl says 'Granted. Your execution will take
place tomorrow. And afterwards we shall feast and discuss the summer raids.'
(Am also thinking of writing another novel about someone reincarnated in to a parallel world of Hollywood what do you think should I?)
