Chapter 2: Crisis?

Deep in the void, millions of microscopic light particles wriggled as the distance between them was decreased ever so slightly. After an indeterminant amount of time, these particles amalgamated into a small pulsating bluish-red orb that drifted in the endless void. Slowly but surely a hazy white fog started to engulf the orb, a sliver of consciousness awoke in that peculiar ball of light. Amidst the chaos of the void the slightly groggy Dresden opened his metaphorical eyes and inspected his surroundings but all he could see was infinite darkness.

Slowly his mind received an influx of what seemed like his past memories, it started out as a small trickling stream but soon those memories took the form of a raging ocean charged with emotions that threatened his sanity. He braced himself and decided to ride out this emotional roller-coaster ride till the end. Finally, of what seemed like years and an instant at the same time, he recovered all his memories. "Shouldn't I be erased from existence? I am most definitely dead, that I can guarantee from the information I have gathered, and this is not a dream it seems too real." he wondered.

Dresden realized his situation and panic started to set in, "Will this endless darkness be my eternal resting place? Am I going to be alone for eternity? This is worse than torture? Is this a cruel joke? Why did I awaken my consciousness, if this is how I will suffer?" he thought. Dresden could not stop questioning his existence and he was starting to lose his mind when he heard a voice, "Oh get a grip on yourself man. Stop panicking, you won't suffer for eternity, at least not that I know of." Dresden paled, "Relax, I am only joking, I know you have many questions but let me explain your situation first, then we can clear any other issues you have." Dresden was startled, he looked around and wondered, was he imagining things, or was he just going bat shit crazy?

"You see Dresden I am an angel sent by the one true God when you chose to save humanity despite the fact that you would suffer soul-shattering pain you caught God's attention. As you were wiped out of existence you took all seventy elders of the Templars with you and consequently destroyed their organization. The remaining knights and minions were like headless chickens, they had no leaders left no vision to follow, so they did the next best thing for selfish interests, they started to loot the organization's treasures and without checks and balances, the millennia-old ancient order crumbled into nothing in the span of mere months. With the Templars gone the Coronavirus, otherwise known as COVID-19, was never unleashed. You ended up saving millions of lives and millions more from physical, physiological, and emotional pain and distress; not to mention the autonomy, economy, and political stability of hundreds of countries."

The angel took a brief pause to allow all the information to set in and continues, "In light of your meritorious service to those people, your selfless sacrifice and the accumulation of your good deeds, your soul was reconstructed to give you the rewards you deserve because the One True God is not unjust." The angel finished with a dazzling smile with a hint of smugness. "You can choose to pass on to paradise with eternal happiness till the day of judgment, or you can choose to be reborn in a world of your choice just like you read in those fan fiction novels. If you chose the second option you will get to make seven wishes as you know seven is the magic number." He winked. "So; Dresden, what is your choice?"

Dresden was wondering if all this was a dream, he couldn't even wrap his head around what had occurred with him and the Templars. However, he slowly organized his thoughts and realized, how could that excruciating pain be all his imagination, he could still feel the after-effects. He looked towards the angle and asked, "Can it be any fantasy world or is there a limitation?" The angel replied, "well you could choose any world but keep in mind that you will only have access to information that you know beforehand; the plotline, the world-building, etc. so choose wisely."

"Do the world I chose and the family I wish to be born in count as a wish?" Dresden asked with sad puppy dog eyes. The angel looked at him for some time and then replied "Little too greedy, aren't we? And quit your ludicrous act, those eyes don't work on me; but no matter, consider it an additional gift, your birth history, and your background will not count towards one of your wishes so ask away." snarled the angel
