Chapter 7: Chapter 7

Jesse groaned when he woke up with a splitting headache that evening. He slowly opened his eyes and let his vision clear. He found himself on an unfamiliar bed in an unfamiliar room. He rose from the bed, but a shooting pain in his head forced him back.

"Lay back down," Ulric said, entering through the bathroom door. "You're still weak," he said.

"Where am I?" "And, what just happened?" Jesse asked, leaning back and closing his eyes.

"My dorm room, and Mac can explain everything when he returns," Ulric said.

"I'm where?!" Jesse exclaimed, sitting back up.

The door to the dorm room opened, and Mac stepped inside. "Look who's awake," the man said. "Feeling better?" he asked.

"My head feels like it's going to split open," Jesse said. "And I'm wondering what the fuck happened," he said.

"First, take these," Mac instructed, handing him two pills and a glass of water. "Plus, if you'll calm down, I'll explain everything," he said.

"Okay, I'm calm," Jesse said. "Now, start explaining," he demanded. Mac rubbed the back of his neck and asked, "Do you recall our talk about the power that you wanted to have?"

"Vaguely," Jesse said. "Why?" he asked.

Mac glanced at Ulric and back at Jesse. He pulled up a chair and sat down.

"Before I explain my suspicions, tell me what was going on while Ulric was showing you the sword technique," Mac said. "I mean how your feelings and thoughts were at that time," he said.

"I was excited and happy," Jesse said. "Then fear engulfed me when I saw the blade coming towards me," "I panicked," he said, as tears streamed down his face.

"I am really sorry; believe me, I am," Ulric said, as he rose from his chair.

"It sounds like when that happened, your special power kicked in, and you protected yourself by creating an invisible barrier," Mac said.

Everything that happened flashed back in his mind like a movie. Jesse pulled his knees to his chest and cried. He felt the bed squeak when Ulric sat down beside him. "I'm not sure if I want this power anymore," he hiccupped. "You are my first friend here, and I almost hurt you," he said.

"This is my fault," Ulric said. "I didn't realize that I was so close to you showing you that technique," he said.

"It was nobody's fault," Mac said. "We need to get past this and learn how to control this new power of yours," he said.

"I'm just a stupid human who only wanted a life without pain and sorrow," Jesse said, fighting back tears that threatened to fall. "I don't deserve to be here," he said, standing up and running out of the dorm room in tears. Ulric looked at the door with shock and disbelief.

Jesse's vision blurred from the tears when he reached his hotel room. He stumbled around the room, changing into the clothes he had arrived in. "Zeo!" he yelled, calling the sphere's name.

"What is it, young master?" Zeo asked. Between sobs, Jesse said, "I changed my mind," "I want to go back home,"

"What happened, young sir?" Zeo asked. "You're acting strange," he said.

"Just change me back and take me home!" Jesse said, his voice breaking.

"I'm sorry." "But I can't do that," Zeo said.

"400 years of going from world to world, and you can't take someone back to where they came from?" Jesse inquired, his voice slightly raised.

"It's not allowed," Zeo said.

"If you're not going to take me back, I'll find a way to leave this world," Jesse said, tossing the bag and hotel key on the floor and leaving the hotel.

Ulric dressed in warmer clothes and headed to the hotel. He was worried about Jesse and needed to check on him. He knocked on the door upon arriving at the room. There was no answer, but he heard a low hum coming from inside. He turned the knob and found the door unlocked. The blonde stepped inside and found a glowing sphere hovering above Jesse's bag and hotel keys.

"Who are you?" Zeo asked, noticing the stranger.

"I should be the one asking that question," Ulric stated.

"I'm system number 1, named Zeo," he said.

Ulric recalled Jesse telling him that a sphere was with him. "You must be Jesse's guardian," he said.

"I am, or I was," Zeo said. "Now, please tell me who you are," Zeo said.

"Ulric, Jesse's friend," he said. "Where is he?" Ulric asked.

"I don't know," Zeo said. "He was making demands about changing him back and taking him back home," he said.

"You didn't accept his demands, did you?" he asked, raising his voice.

"I told him that it wasn't allowed," Zeo said. "That's when he left," he said.

With thoughts of dread, Ulric rushed out of the room. He had to find his new friend before something bad happened. Jesse was in no condition, mentally or physically, to be running around the city. Ulric stopped outside in front of the hotel and opened his holographic screen. He took a deep breath to calm his frayed nerves and messaged Mac.

I'm at the hotel. I heard from his system guardian that Jesse was demanding to be sent back home. All of his belongings are here, but he left. We need to find him before he does something to himself. I'm scared and worried.

Ulric

Ulric opened the screen when he received a message a moment later.

Stay where you are. I'm coming to get you. Stay calm, or your wolf side will activate. We'll find him. He can't get very far.

Mac

Mac showed up moments later and found Ulric pacing back and forth. "Have you tried messaging him?" Mac asked.

"I have, but he won't answer," Ulric said. "When he ran out like that, I wanted to run after him," he said.

"Let's start our search with the park," Mac suggested. Ulric checked the trail where Jesse used to do his walking while Mac checked other parts. The moon shone brightly, illuminating the park.

"He isn't here," Ulric said when they met at the entrance.

"Where else would he go?" Mac asked.

"Only here and the hotel," Ulric said.

They only had one option left. Ulric transformed into a wolf and searched for any traces of Jesse's scent. Ulric's nose was filled with the faint scent of Jesse's scent. He raised his head and sniffed the air. In his throat, a growl resounded. He dashed towards the location indicated by the scent, with Mac close behind.

The closer Ulric got to the lakeside, the stronger Jesse's scent was. Under the rays of the moon, a shadow caught his eye. As he got closer, Ulric spotted a silhouette in the sand.

"Please, goddess, don't let it be him," he said. When Ulric, the wolf, stepped closer, his fears were confirmed. In the sand, Jesse lay motionless and soaking wet. Ulric sniffed him to see if he was alive. Jesse's breathing was faint but noticeable.

"He's cold as ice," Ulric said to himself. "I'm not letting you out of my sight ever again," he said. Ulric laid down next to Jesse to keep him warm until Mac arrived.
