Chapter 1: prologue

The Hall was definitely in uproar after finishing the movies about Harry Potter's life. Even he barely knew what to say after learning of Dumbledore's plan for him - the man he had considered his grandfather had lied to him his whole life and had prepared him to die. He had taken care of everything and everyone around Harry's life in order to have a better handle on him - hiding so many things that he could barely recall them if asked now. The Founders had been adamant about his treachery - and who wouldn't believe them after what they had shown?

His parents had joined him - a gift from Mother Magic. They were barely out of school when they sacrificed themselves for him and hadn't lived long enough to move towards the other side.

The only one who hadn't fared better than him was Sirius : learning that you could have been free all along if your previous meddling Headmaster hadn't done anything had destroyed him from the inside. Even though his body was younger and healthier, Harry had seen his crestfallen facial expression once he saw his sister drown with the Inferi. He hadn't heard a lot about Regulus Black, aside from the fact that she was a child prodigy and the perfect Heiress to the Black family fortune and traditions.

Even Walburga and Orion who had sneered and shown their displeasure during the whole week while they were watching had cried once they finally understood they would never see their darling daughter ever again. Bellatrix, Narcissa and Andromeda had held hands for the first time in forever after watching her sacrifice herself to end Voldemort's reign.

The only reactions Harry hadn't understood were his parents'. His father had seemed more hurt by her death than his own, holding in tears while trying to appear unaffected, whereas his mother had cried silently, staying hidden behind her trembling hands. She kept throwing him glances every now and then and smiling at him, showing him her love and appreciation.

His musings were cut short once the Founders started walking towards the Gryffindor table, looking directly at him and his entourage. Harry gulped and looked around for support - but everyone was just as surprised as him...aside from Lily Potter.

"Listen, you have to know that you are my son, forever and always," she said before they got too close. "Whatever they tell you, never doubt the love of your mother. Neither one of them, you hear me ?"

He barely had time to ask her more questions before the screen turned on again and the Founders surrounded them, each one seated at the extremity of their tight knit group.

"Do you know, Harry, why my sword kept appearing every time you needed it ?," asked Godric, looking at him with some sort of pity...and guilt (?). The teenager didn't have an answer to his question, and even his ancestor knew it. "It needed a sacrifice. A life for a life. I promised your mother I would find a way to help you with the prophecy if she did a task for me. In exchange, she had to die..."

Harry looked at him, still shocked by his words. "But...my mother died at the hands of Voldemort, with the Killing Curse. There was no...I don't understand !," he finally screamed, enraged by the lack of information people were giving him.

"Just watch my dear," softly whispered Helga, using her motherly touch to calm him down.

Next to him, Sirius tensed. He had known his sister had joined the Death Eaters young, but he would have never guessed she was barely in her fifth year while he was in his seventh. Two years seemed like nothing for other siblings - but they had been so different from the start that it had just cemented their separation once and for all. He had compared her to Bellatrix and the other fanatics so many times - never thinking she had been involved to spare him.

Every single interaction between them came back to him, surprising even him with their intensity. If he had paid attention, he would have seen the fear in her eyes, the anxiety in her movements and even the exhaustion on her body.

Harry wanted to scream and shout, but the only thing he could do was look at Sirius (who wasn't only his godfather, but his uncle). He had been swept under the rug too many times since the movies started and he didn't know if he could fare longer if he had to learn more hidden truths about his existence. He had spent his whole life thinking Lily was his mother - even after being hurt senseless by Petunia and Vernon. Well, had he gone with Regulus' family, it would have been way worse - he might not have survived the first night.

The Chosen One stood up, shaking in anger and desperation. Once again, a mother had been taken away from him too soon and one he had only heard horrible things about. She had risked her life for her brother who only hated her for the image she was giving others, she had hid her friendship with a Muggleborn to save her, she had forsaken her love so he could raise his son and she had forfeited her life so Harry could be happy.

She hadn't even cared that he would never know about her : she just loved him.
