Chapter 21: Chapter 19: New Bike

Ryan - "By the way, I also have a question why is it that Luke's riding a girl's bike?"

Phil - "It's his sister's old bike."

Ryan - "I see."

Claire - "We will probably add more black tape to it."

Ryan - "Good."

Commentary –

Phil - "See how embarrassing that was."

Claire - "We have to wait until he is more responsible. Look, he spilled a soda on my computer. He ruined our digital camera taking pictures of himself underwater."

Phil - "I'm all for teaching him a lesson, but I worry about the ridicule."

Claire - "Ryan wasn't ridiculing him."

Phil - "I know, but that's cause he is family. I worry about the ridicule he might get from some… loudmouth bully."

Commentary ends.

Jay suddenly drives past: "Heeeey! Nice bike, Sally."

Claire: "Dad."

Jay: "Come on, he looks like Little Bo Beep on that thing."

Ryan: "What does that even mean?"

Luke: "I don't know, mom?"

Jay: "It's a nursery rhyme about a girl."

Ryan: "I see."

Jay: "Take a look at your bike, then compare it with that abomination, and you will get what I am talking about."

Phil: "Alright, that's it. Luke's getting a new bike this afternoon."

Commentary –

Phil: "Sometimes a man's gotta put his foot down and do what a man is gotta do and if the old lady don't like it."

"Honey."

Phil pauses for a second.

Phil - "That too damn bad."

Claire: "You said something?"

While signaling to cut the shot, Phil spoke, "Nope."

Commentary ends.

The group then reached the Dunphy house. Claire immediately headed toward the computer to get her email ID while Ryan headed to Alex's room.

Ryan knocked on the door and asked, "May I come in?"

Alex – "Yes."

Haley – "Who is that?"

Ryan opened the door and entered the room.

Haley - *Oh, I didn't know we had Ryan over."

Alex – "Neither did I."

Ryan – "I just happened to meet your parents when I was out cycling. I came over to say hi."

Haley smiled and spoke, "I see. I will leave you guys alone then."

Before Alex or Ryan could speak, Haley quickly headed downstairs.

Alex – "Hi, I guess."

Ryan – "Okay, now that your sister's left, I didn't just come over to say hi."

Alex got up from her bed, got right in Ryan's face, and spoke, "Oh then.*

Ryan – "Quick, pass me your email ID. I have something to forward to you."

Alex was caught entirely off guard and replied, "What? "

Ryan - *Yeah, I am forwarding your mom my book, so I thought, why not forward it to you as well."

Alex – "Book? "

Ryan – "Oh yes, I didn't tell you yet. I wrote a Detective novel, and it will be published. I have signed a contract and everything."

Alex – "Really!? "

Ryan – "Yes, I swear to god if I lie, I go to hell."

Alex – "Don't talk like that. Fine, I will give you my email. Give me a minute."

Alex then tore a small piece of paper on which she wrote her email and handed it over to Ryan.

Alex - *Is that all? "

Ryan scratched his head and replied, "Yup," and ran downstairs.

Claire – "Oh, you are finally here."

She then folded a small piece of paper and put it into Ryan's pocket.

Claire – "Alright, that's my email."

Ryan - *Alright, I will forward you a PDF of the book."

Claire - "One sec."

Ryan then saw her write the word PDF in a book.

Claire – "Ah, got it."

Phil came from the bathroom and spoke, "Alright, Luke, where are you. We got to go get you a bike remember."

Claire whispered to Ryan – "Are you free right now? "

Ryan – "Yeah."

Claire – "Honey, take Ryan along with you. He will help you choose a good bike. Now, won't you, Ryan?"

Ryan – "Yeah, I can come along. If you don't mind."

Phil – "of course not. "

Claire – "Good."

Claire whispered to Ryan – "Just make sure he doesn't mess something up."

Ryan whispered back, "I will do my best."

Ryan, Phil, and Luke got in Phil's car and headed to the bicycle store.

Luke - "Dad, this is the coolest bike ever."

Phil – "You have to thank Ryan as well. After all, he selected a slick design. "

Ryan – "No need. You are the one who bought it. I just selected a design that looked good."

Phil – "So listen, buddy… Certain family members don't think you can take care of this bad boy.

Luke - "You mean mom?"

Ryan looked over at Phil.

Phil – "It's his words, not mine. Look, uh… your mom and I are a team, and we feel like this is a chance for you to show some responsibility."

Ryan – "Yes, Luke, you must take care of your bike and avoid even getting the slightest scratch. "

"Always be careful with it; otherwise, one's it's damaged beyond repair, you won't get a new bike. Am I right, uncle Phil."

Phil – "Yes, listen to Ryan."

Luke – "I promise I will take care of it."

Phil – "Also, Ryan, stop calling me uncle. It makes me feel very old. Just call me Phil."

Ryan – "Alright, unc.. Phil."

Phil – "See, you even developed a habit of calling me, uncle."

Ryan – "Don't worry, I will get used to it, Philll."

Phil – "Good, and as for you, Luke, I have one more rule before you go out to cycle."

Luke – "What."

Phil - "Have, like, three bike-loads of fun."

Luke – "Thanks, dad."

Luke then rode off into the distance, thoroughly enjoying his new bike.

Ryan – "Look at him, go on that thing."

Phil – "Yeah, you kids grow up so fast."

"Alright, I have to get some groceries while I am here. If you don't mind, I will drop you off after that. "

Ryan – "Yeah, sure, I will help you as well."

Phil – "You know how to pick out fresh vegetables?"

Ryan – "Yeah, I asked my mom to teach me a few years back."

Phil – "Damn, is there something you can't do?"

Ryan – "Of course, I am not omnipotent, just a bit smart for my age."

Phil – "I do have to say Alex sure picked out a good boy."

Ryan and Phil then went grocery shopping at a nearby grocery store. While loading the trunk of the car, Phil noticed an identical bike parked on the roadside.

Phil – "Look at that. It has not even been 15 minutes since he made the promise, and he left his bike parked outside."

Ryan – "Damn it, after all, that he promised us."

Phil – "You know, I think we should teach him a lesson."

Ryan – "What's the plan? "

Phil – "Let's go and steal Luke's bike."

Ryan – "What? "
