Chapter 2: Becoming A Mage

13 years passed by in the blink of an eye. He found out that the giant man who gave off a powerful aura was his father, and he was born in a low class noble family. His mother passed away soon after he was born, presumably from giving birth to him. He rarely saw his father during the past 13 years, his servants took care of him. After his mother died his father seemed to start disliking him, refusing to teach him, etc.

After understanding the language of the new world, he learnt that he was born in an entirely different world. Although the technology was much lower than Earth's, there was the existence of magic.

Magic!

The second he had learnt that there was magic, his inner desire to become immortal immediately woke up. From that moment on he swore that he would devote everything and anything to becoming the strongest in the world, and one day becoming immortal. If only this existed in his previous life… He tried to ask his father about magic, but he was immediately rejected by him. "When you turn 13, you will learn magic and go from this house. Don't talk about it again!"

Today is finally the day that his father deemed him of age to start learning magic. He had already tried to ask him before but was shot down without any hesitation. He tried learning it himself, but he has no clue where to start. Although he made countless attempts until now, nothing happened. But today his father will send over a tutor to start him on the road to becoming a mage.

As he sat in his room waiting for the tutor to come, he shoved a strange fruit down his throat. It tasted terrible and made his insides burn, but his father insisted for him to eat it. He claimed it was important for waking yourself up to becoming a mage. With his mind steeled from growing his obsession over countless years in the void, it was no challenge at all to eat some discomforting fruits. Although a servant was looking at him making sure he ate all of them. If he didn't, they would be forced to force feed him.

About an hour later a large knocking could be heard throughout the house. Ray was surprised since he was keeping an eye on the road in front of the house to see who would come, but he never saw anyone come. He could only blame it on magic.

Ray quickly ran downstairs where his father had already met the tutor.

"This must be the Dyant household. And you are Grian Dyant?" A friendly looking man asked his father.

His father courtly responded, "Yes, come in."

Ray decided to make his appearance now, and greeted the tutor. "Welcome, sir. It is a pleasure to meet you." He said while bowing.

"No need to do all that." The tutor chuckled. "You can call me Grant, I'll be opening your soul to the vast world of magic."

"Let's get started and not waste too much time shall we. I'll have to warn you now though, it will be very painful. It will be quick and over in a second, but do not lose consciousness." Grant said with a stern face. "Many people have died from not being able to hold on, I wouldn't want to add you to the list."

"Get ready and brace for the pain. 3… 2… 1…" A strange transparent blue wisp came out of Grants hand and swept towards Ray's brain. Although Ray was a little surprised seeing the blue thing coming towards him, he didn't have much time to admire it. The second the blue wisp entered Ray's head he instantly convulsed and fell to the ground. It felt like his body was being torn from the inside out, and a small rift was created in his soul. He clutched his hands together while blood started to come out from his palms from his nails digging into it. Just how quickly the pain came, it also left within a few seconds and left him panting on the ground.

Grant picked Ray up with one hand and placed him on a chair. He put smelling salts underneath Ray's nose without any room for a breather. "Are you good now?"

"Yes" Ray whispered in a tired tone.

"Good, because you're going to have to get used to this. The path of a mage isn't an easy one, you might as well quit while you can if you can't handle it."

'Can't handle just this little pain?' Ray snorted in his head. 'The pain of floating through the void was a thousand times this'. "I'm fine sir grant."

"Good, good." Grant replied.

Ray's father, Grian Dyant had a slightly satisfied look on his face for the first time. It wasn't that noticeable, but this was the first time Ray saw a change in expression with him.

"I guess it's time for me to fill you in on mages. As far as we know right now there are 19 known levels as a mage.  The first four are known as apprentice mages. Right now, you are a level 1 apprentice mage. You should be able to innately feel when you reach the next level. The fifth through fourteenth levels are known as official mages. Remember this clearly, never offend an official magus! The difference between apprentice mages and an official mage is vast, it's like the difference between gold and dirt. It wouldn't take but a single thought for the weakest magus to annihilate you. And finally the 15th through 19th levels are mage adepts. According to old legends and rumors there are levels beyond that, but so far it is unknown to us." Grant explained. He had a deep expression as he said the last part. "The last thing I'll tell you is how to become an official magus. What I just did right now is puncture a hole through your soul so you can start to absorb the planar energy produced by our world. What you need to do is convert your soul to one compatible with this plane. The more compatible your soul is with the plane, the more energy you can freely use and store within your soul. And once your soul is fully compatible, you become an official magus."

Ray listened carefully with an engaged look on his face. He had to soak up all the information while he still can, since soon his father would send him to the mage school associated with this land. "How exactly do I make my soul more compatible with the plane?"

"Good question. You should be able to 'feel' the planal energy being absorbed by your soul. You need to fuse that energy with your soul until you have done that with your entire soul. As for how you will do that, you will need to figure it out yourself." Grant replied. "That should be it, pleasure doing business with you Grian. Oh one last thing before I go. This world is a ruthless place where mages will do anything to get ahead in power. Watch your back, you never know when someone will kill you…"

Ray started wondering what he meant by that, it seemed the outside world wasn't as peaceful as he thought. He had to stay within the noble house his entire time growing up, and he didn't learn much about the outside world. After that grant disappeared from his view as if he was never there, only leaving a note with his business card for future reference.
