Chapter 1: Serpents
I have no parents, at least I've never met them. Sometimes I fantasize about what it's like having parents, the trips we would have together, the dinners we would of had together and the arguments we would have had as well. It all seems so comforting. But as I turn 18 in a few months I'll be on my own. It all seemed so fast. End of recording.
"Hey, Etta that tape recorder, you've had that thing since we were toddlers. Where did you get it from?" A girl asked.
This is Mirel, she's my best friend, in a matter of fact she's my sister. We first met as toddlers and since then we are always together in this orphanage. Whatever she went through I went through and whatever I went through she went through.
"Earth to Etta". Said a confused Mirel. "Sorry I was spacing out". Said Etta "You're starting to do that more and more these days"."What was your question again." Etta curiously asked Mirel."Fine… I'll say it slowly… Where… did… you… Get… That… Tape… Recorder?
As Etta and Mirel stared long-faced at each other they started to laugh.
"Mirel can you believe we're almost 18?" Etta asked Mirel. "Indeed I can believe we're almost 18. The real question is where we are moving when we leave this damn orphanage considering we'll be together." Mirel confidently said to Etta. "I was thinking about somewhere like Italy," Etta, full of hope, told Mirel. "And the city would be Rome." Mirel happily told Etta.
As Etta and Mirel continue their conversation, a man walks in with a girl who seemed to be 15 years old.
"Sorry to interrupt you girls convo but y'all have a new roommate, her name is Valentina. I want you three to get acquainted with each other. Oh yeah, one other thing every child here is getting transported to another orphanage". The man told the three girls. "What!" Said the two girls.
Mirel starts to question the man. "Why are we moving to a new location Derek?" Said an anxious Mirel. "This isn't me, this is straight from the top. If it was up to me I would make you two managers." Derek told Mirel.
Etta notices that Valentina looks anxious and shooken up. Etta approaches Valentina.
"When is this happening?" Mirel asked Derek. "It's happening tomorrow morning so you three prepare for that and I'm sorry for having to do this." Derek told the girls.
As Derek walks out of Mirel and Etta room they stare blanklessly at him while he leaves.
"Do you know anything about this Valentina? Etta suspiciously asked.
Valentina nervously attempts to answer but is cut off by an irate Mirel.
"Etta, stop can't you see she's afraid!" Mirel told Etta. "Mirel she could know something about this." Etta angrily told Mirel.
Valentina looks up at a frustrated Etta and a sympathetic Mirel preparing to tell them something.
" Y…you aren't actually getting transported to another orphanage.
Both Etta and Mirel is tooken back by Valentina's response.
"So… where are we going?" Etta anxiously asked. "I don't know they wouldn't mention the place but how they described the so-called "orphanage" sounds more like a training camp or something. " Said a whining Valentina. "Are they sending us to a slave camp?" Said a worried Mirel. "No, it's 2035. Why would there be any slave camps?" Etta reaffirms Mirel. "You never know." Valentina told the girls. "Not helping," Etta angrily told Valentina.
Etta and Mirel are stunned to hear about them potentially leaving the orphanage for a camp. They come to the realization that they have to find out more information about this "camp".
Etta we have to sneak up to the conference room." Mirel worrily told Etta. "I'm with you" Etta confidently told Mirel.
As they start to sneak out their room they are stopped by Valentina.
"Let me come with you guys I can help." Valentina determinedly told the girls. "No you'll only get in our way" Etta savagely told Valentina. "Etta what's the worst that can happen. Let her come with us." Mirel assertively told Etta.
Etta looks at Valentina with doubt but agreed to let her come with them. As they head down a dark hallway the girls spot a security guard upstairs guarding the conference room.
"Etta can you distract him?" Mirel asked Etta. "How should I do that?" Etta worryingly asked Mirel. "No, she shouldn't be the one to distract the guard, it should be me. You two have been here since forever ago. I'll go. It's more believable since I'm new here." Valentina determinedly told the girls.
As the three girls agree on the plan Valentina goes to distract the guard.
"What are you doing up here this late at night." The guard suspiciously asked Valentina. "Sorry I couldn't find the bathroom you wouldn't happen to know where it is would you?" Valentina asked with puppy dog eyes. "Well… the bathroom ain't up here it's downstairs I'll show you come on.
As the guard and Valentina heads back downstairs Valentina purposely falls to get an opening for Mirel and Etta to run.
"Hey! What's wrong with you?!" The guard asked Valentina. "My back…Back… it hurts!!! Valentina yells to the guard.
The guard rushes Valentina to the nurses office. Etta and Mirel rushes to the conference and starts listening in on the conversation.
"Ina you can take the kids to your military base as long as you hold up your end of the deal and get me to the greenlands before the war. Derek said determined to Ina. "I will hold up my end of the deal and you will get to the greenlands safely. I just need one more thing from you. "What?" Don't get in the way tomorrow. Whatever happens happens. Ina relaxingly told Derek.
. A terrified and flabbergasted Etta and Mirel head back to their room and sit in silence for a while until it's broken by A women in military clothing with Derek and a terrified Valentina.
"Valentina here told us that the three of you were eavesdropping on my conversation. Is this true?" Ina asked the girls.
As Mirel is about to tell the truth she is stopped by Etta.
We don't even know her, she's a liar. She only arrived today. Etta said concerningly to Ina.
Ina stares at Valentina with vicious intent and punches her until both her eyes is purple and can't open. As Valentina lays knocked out cold on the ground Ina grabs both of her legs and drags her out of the girls room. The girls and Derek look on in shock now not knowing what to do.
"Go to bed girls please." Derek asked the girls fearfully.

"How could you do that to Valentina? She was so nice to us' ' Said a teary-eyed Mirel. "Do not put that on me!!… Don't put that on me. How was I supposed to know that she was going to beat Valentina half to death. I did this for us Mirel." Etta sympathetically tells Mirel.
Mirel gets in Etta's face and pushes her. Etta pushes Mirel back, Mirel runs toward Etta tussling her down to the ground. Etta punches Mirel in the face, Mirel grabs Etta hair then punches her in the stomach multiple times. Etta gets her legs up to kick Mirel off of her. Etta regains her balance and pukes from her stomach pain while Mirel sits on the floor sobbing. Both the girls get in their bed and don't speak to each other the rest of the night.
As the orphanage alarm clock hits 10:30 Am children between the ages of 12 to 17 are called to the front of the orphanage for "adoption." As all the children approached the witness sight to a tied up and blindfolded Valentina bruised to the bone kneeling in front of them.
"My name is Ina Mary Bellevue and In my heart of hearts I believe if we raise a soldier they will be a damn perfect soldier! I come from an orphanage just like you, we are the same. That's why I'm here today to show you the love you never got from your so-called "parents." I will take you in, feed you amazing food, train you to be untouchable in this damn serpent made world. Soon we will learn the only people we count on is family and anyone outside of that will die. Now I know some of you may have questions about Ms. Zacar'ias here, I caught her eavesdropping on me and Derek's conversation. Now that's a no-no I will give the two other girls that was with her to the count of five to step in and take the beating for their friend. "3…2…" Ina warned the children.
Mirel stood up but was pulled back down by Etta. Ina notice this but she continued to count.
I knew was right. "Ina whispered into Valentina ear"
Ina pulls out her gun by the butt part and pistol whips Valentina so brutally her eye pops out while Valentina blood splatters across the floor and walls of the orphanage. The Children look on in disgust and traumatic shock with teary eyes. As Ina was hitting her Valentina other eye was gouged out the back of her head. Ina stopped but her head continued to decompose blood.
"Now I don't like doing this but there needs to be a punishment for every bad deed or that's all you children will do. It's simple I want you kids to follow 5 simple rules" Ina told the kids
1. OBEY ME!!!
2. Don't speak unless spoken too.
3.Always tell the truth
4. You will act as my soldiers
5. We are family no matter what we do to each other.
"Are we clear?!!!" Ina shouts in a very eerie voice.
Ina then proceeds to put a bullet in Valentina's skull. The Children whine while others are in shock or peeing themselves. All of the children nod their heads.
