Chapter 2: Chapter One[I]: New Plan - Run (I)

Xenos Waters walks into his school, the warm air of the building causing him to release a relieved sigh as his numb fingers regain their feeling. He reaches into his hoodie's pocket, pausing his music with the click of a button. He pulls his earbuds out and shoves them into his pocket before suddenly realizing something, it's silent, completely and utterly silent. Xenos feels the dread he had managed to push down surge up again, accompanied by a small hint of fear.

Glancing around, he notices that there is no one around, no staff, no students, hell, not even muddy footprints other than his own. Sure, he's early, but at the very least there are always five to ten other students walking around on one or more floors and chatting. Now, though, the building feels almost. . . abandoned. And he has no clue how or why this is even possible, considering that there is, in fact, school today.

The silence makes him very uneasy, and it felt false in a way. Man-made, but not quite by a man. So, he hesitates as he looks at the pristine stairs leading to the second floor where his first class is supposed to be. In the end, his curiosity gets the best of him, and he starts to make his way up the stairs, the screeching sounds his wet soles make on the tiled floor seeming almost deafening.

Swallowing thickly at the top of the stairs, he gathers up enough courage to peek around the corner and into the empty hall. Nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary, though a light seemed to be flickering and was that a. . ? Xenos gulps, his back pressed tightly against the wall. No, it can't be. These bricks are a few inches thick, there is no way a deep gouge mark is in it.

𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘦, Xenos tries to rationalize, 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘩, 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘪𝘵, 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘬. Even as he thinks that a grimace settles on his face, but it seems to be the only logical explanation at this point, and he is willing to believe just about anything right now that doesn't have to do with monsters or something like that.

Sucking in a shaky breath, Xenos walks into the hallway, immediately feeling self-conscious. His steps are too loud and so is his breathing, cold sweat is running down his back as he cautiously trudges down the hall, feeling like this is all one big mistake. 𝘞𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘴𝘰 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨? Xenos asks himself, feeling hyper-aware of everything around him, including the small dimming of the lights.

The voices in his head start up again, the screams all sounding panicked. Instead of the usual chants, they all say the same word simultaneously, 𝘙𝘶𝘯. They repeated the word over and over again, the volume making his steps falter and his knees feel weak. He wants to collapse on the ground and sleep for eternity, his head hurts so much it's as if his brain was going to implode.

Xenos falls against the wall but quickly pushes himself up as the voices quiet down a little, allowing him to think clearly for the time being. He walks forward, instantly feeling a strong urge to run for his life as his pace speeds up along with his breathing. This was a bad idea, a very, very bad idea, and now he's panicking right alongside the voices.

He almost stumbles when he feels something behind him, but when he spins on his heel, nothing is there. Xenos wastes no time, turning back around and running with all of the strength he has. 𝘜𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭, the voices suddenly screamed together, 𝘳𝘶𝘯. He is near tears at this point, he is so stupid. He should have listened to his gut, this is not where he should be. He should have just skipped, God, he is so stupid.

His thoughts are abruptly cut off when he feels something like a clawed hand touch his shoulder. Xenos feels his breath catch in his throat, his momentum cut off as if it was never there to begin with. Time feels like it slows down, and he is absolutely terrified by whatever, not whoever, is touching his shoulder. Because one fact is as clear as day to him: this thing is not human.

It seems that his fight or flight instinct kicked in, since the next thing he knows he's lunging for a closed classroom that he can only pray isn't locked -- it isn't. He twists the handle and basically falls into the room, but not before he slams the door closed, locking it. He scrambles away from the door backwards and on the ground, knowing very well he can't stand even if he wants to. His whole body shakes with nerves, his shoulder bringing him sharp pain even with the adrenaline.

Xenos almost screams when he bumps into a body, the person behind him quickly clasping their dark hand onto his mouth and pulling him firmly against their body. He heaves in large breaths through his nose, who the hell was behind him? He manages to twist his head slightly to look behind him, his dark blue eyes locking with forest green ones.

The person behind him was male, with short, curly black hair and a strong body, as far as he is able to tell. The student looks terrified, glancing at the door as if it's going to attack them, Xenos feels the same exact way. "Are you going to scream?" The student whispers, Xenos simply shakes his head in response.

Whatever trance he was in is now broken, and he feels like he can breathe again, maybe he's hallucinating. That searing pain in his shoulder proves that theory wrong very quickly. The student lets go of his mouth and Xenos immediately stands up even as his knees shake, glancing at the door warily before looking at the student. Hallucination or not, Xenos is getting the hell out of here.

Looking around the room, Xenos spots an odd-looking metal statue placed on the teacher's desk and jogs to it, grabbing it before going over to the window beside the student. Just as he's about to slam the statue into the window, that thing on the side of the door speaks, "Xenos Waters," he lets out a strangled noise and hits the window as hard as he can, a small crack forming, "and Felix Zevitas, come out and follow me without a struggle."

Xenos grits his teeth and hits the window again, about to burst into frustrated tears as another small crack forms. That voice is terrifying, scratchy and gurgling and so very not human. There is no way he's getting out of this room unless it's out this window, he is not going to be eaten like some animal. Felix suddenly stands up and grabs the statue out of his hands, banging on the window just as Xenos heard the door begin to break.

Felix hits the window again and it shatters, he throws the statue away and Xenos grabs Felix's hand, vaulting out of the window just as the door falls to the floor. He screams as they plummet to the ground, his hand filled with glass shards. He lands on his side, all of his breath leaving his lungs from the impact, a strangled cry leaving his lips as pain blossoms throughout him. Xenos pushes himself up, desperate to get away from the creature in the building.

The shards dig deep into his skin, tears polling in his eyes from the pain. He forces them down as he staggers to his feet, looking back at Felix who's already on his feet, limping slightly. It seems Felix must have twisted his ankle while landing but Xenos hardly cares at the moment, grabbing Felix's arm and pulling him towards himself, not daring to look back at the school as the creature screeches so loudly it makes his ears ring.

Felix grunts as Xenos drags him but says nothing, looking just as desperate to get away, stumbling only slightly as Xenos tries to frantically run. His lungs burn and he is positive that he broke some ribs, but that is the least of his concerns right now. Felix eventually puts his arm over Xenos' shoulders, their steps evening out as they run as far away from the school as possible.

Xenos has no idea where they are going, but anything is better than going back to school. When they are about a hundred feet away he gathers enough courage to look back, wishing instantly he hadn't. The creature is in the widow, sucking all the light away. Long, black claws hook around the window's edge, piercing into the concrete like it's butter.

Its body is stocky, deadly looking black spikes protruding from its spine, appearing sharp enough to rip through Xenos' skin just by touching them. Its arms are much too long for its body, looking just long enough to touch the ground if it let go of the window.

He knows its face will haunt him for the rest of his life, teeth the size of his fingers stick out of its maw. They're a pearly white in colour, and Xenos has no wish to know what that black goo is that's dripping from its open mouth. It has no nose, face and body covered in gleaming black scales that seem to enhance the glow from its beady, pupilless, red eyes as it stars after them.

One word fills his mind: demonic.
