Chapter 7: Making a Break For It

"You're telling me that my strongest spell is an explosion?" Louise's eyes twitched with agitation.

Every spell that she tried to conjure up back home whether it was fire, water, earth or wind all ended up in a grand explosion. She had been made the center of jokes because of her explosions.

Wasn't this a bit insulting?!

Whatever. Fine. She still had her pride!

However, what shocked and amazed her the most was her class. Void mages were incredibly rare back in her world. Was she really a Void Mage?

The only person that Louise could recall who could use Void magic was the Founder Brimir, the first ever Void mage. Then, that would explain why she had no affinities for all the other elements!

'Take that, Kirche!' Louise wanted to brag her. Too bad that redhead bitch wasn't here to see it.

Louise was a curious gal, especially when it came to new spells. What better time to test her new spells than now? A mischievous grin plastered her face as she took a quick glance at Batu.

With a wave of her wand, Louise quickly recited the skill name in her mind, 'Teleport!'

"AH!" Batu had the living daylights scared out of him when Louise suddenly appeared right behind him unexpectedly.

He clutched his fast-beating heart and glared angrily at her, "Don't do that!"

"C'mon, it's just a joke," Louise laughed, wiping away a tear from her eye.

Batu calmed himself down and check the countdown of the event.

Only 3 hrs and 30 minutes left.

The castle was still quite a distance away from here. It would have been nearly impossible if he went there by himself in a city swarming with demons.

Now that he wasn't alone, Batu had a better chance of making it there with his whole body intact.

"I think we should go now," he said. "With the three of us, I think we have a chance."

"Got a plan?" Chin asked, leaning against the wall. "We can't just go out there running like idiots."

Batu rubbed his chin in thought. He then took another glance at Louise's status. He can use [Skill Acquirement] to take one of Louise's skills for himself.

[Explosion] looked like a powerful skill, but [Teleport] could save his ass if he ended up in a bad situation. Besides, [Explosion] had a minimum cast time of 5 seconds.

That was enough time for an enemy to kill him before he had any chance to cast it. There was also [Illusion], but Batu didn't really have any interest in that.

In the end, he decided to choose [Teleport].

___________

[The skill [Teleport] have been acquired!]

(Teleport | LVL.1): Able to teleport anywhere within a range of 3 meters.

Cost: 25 mana

____________

It was lower than the original, but it will definitely do. With the amount of mana that he had, he would only be able to cast it 4 times, so he had to use it sparingly.

Suddenly, an idea popped up in his head.

"If we can get Louise to cast Illusion on those demons, I think we will be able to sneak by undetected."

"Hah? Why can't I just use my explosion?" Louise crossed her arms. "I would easily wipe the floor with them with the power of a Vallière."

"You'll be causing a bigger commotion. I'd rather not have to deal with any more demons on our tails."

Louise pouted at him.

Ah, his heart. Even when she's mad, she was still cute.

"Well, I guess we ain't have a choice, then," Chin picked up a pickaxe nearby. It was dirty, but it will get the job done. "Hehe, don't mind if I borrow this, Mr. Owner."

The owner of this house was probably long gone anyways. Besides, Chin needed himself a weapon, so a pickaxe would do quite nicely for the time being.

"Hey, Batu, think fast," Chin tossed him a shovel that he found next to the pickaxe.

Batu quickly caught it and inspected it with a frown, "Hey... why do I get the shovel instead?"

"Warriors have priorities over weapons," Chin said with a smug. "Deal with it."

Batu couldn't help but roll his eyes.

"Well, if things comes to the worst, we'll have to rely on your explosion, Louise," Batu rubbed her head.

"Hmph," Louise swung her head the other way; a typical tsundere move.

As they climbed the stairs to the cellar door, they heard the faint roars of demons from above. A sudden chill went up Louise's spine, and she started to have seconds thoughts about this.

"Do we really have to do this?" she asked nervously, "Maybe we can stay here where it's nice and safe."

"If you want to die, then sure go for it," Batu answered with his hands on the door, ready to push it open.

Batu would be lying to himself if he wasn't afraid. But the smallest grasp for a chance to live outweighed his fears. Even if it meant running through a horde of demons.

"Don't worry, lil' lass, we'll protect ya," Chin gave her a thumbs up in reassurance.

Letting out a loud exhale, Batu slowly opened the cellar, just enough to allow him to peek through the cracks.

The streets were empty besides strewn corpses laying about. They were definitely players. However, Batu didn't have time to think about their horrendous deaths. He needed to move.

Ensuring that the coast was clear, Batu quietly made his way through the street with Chin and Louise. The blackened wood crackled under the raging fire as they ran past burning houses.

It was eerily quiet here aside from the few roars out in the distance. Some poor bastard must be running for his life right now.

They moved carefully, ensuring they don't make any sound to alert any demons.

"ROAR!"

Louise nearly screamed, but Batu quickly covered her mouth to shut her up. That was a close call. He raised a finger up to his mouth which was a universal sign to shut the fuck up.

With his back against the wall, Batu slowly peeked past the corner. Just nearby, a demon was viciously devouring a corpse, ripping and tearing at it with its sharp teeth.

Louise gagged in disgust as human intestines hung from its mouth. She had never seen anything like this before and wanted to vomit.

Batu waited it out for a bit, just simply observing the monster. If they across the street now, it would easily spot them. However, with Louise here, they should be able to get by only if the [Illusion] skill worked.

No, it had to.

Batu signaled Louise with a small nod. Louise quickly understood and moved in front of him. With her wand pointed at the demon, she immediately casted [Illusion].

[Cast successful!]

The demon suddenly stopped devouring the corpse and grew slump.

"Go!" Louise loudly whispered.

They soon ran past it, making their way to the other side of the road. They were safe for now. With Louise mana supply now at 455, she should be able to use [Illusion] 22 more times.

Fifteen minutes passed since they had left the cellar. They had been moving at a snail's pace, trying their best to not get caught. They would have been caught in some instances if not for Louise's [Illusion]. Damn, that skill came in handy.

Although the castle was still a bit of a distance away, they would be able to make it with enough time left.

"See anything, Batu?" Chin asked, crouching down on one knee.

Batu looked past the house and spotted no demons in sight, "I'm not seein' anything." He answered quietly.

Just as he was about to move, Batu suddenly became stiff as a board; his blood ran cold. He was too scared to move as splash of saliva soaked his shoulders. Then, a deep and guttural growl filled his ears.

He slowly looked up.

There. On the roof. It was a demon looking down at them with a malicious grin.
