Chapter 1: Through the Veil

Sirius Black saw the world slow as the curse from his own cousin lifted him off of his feet and was thrown with magic. The day had not gone well.

"It seems like I will not be able to heroicly rescue my godson after all", Sirius thought as he approached the large stone gateway known as the Veil within the Death Chamber.

His eyes darted towards his beloved godson. He didn't get the chance to say many things to Harry. All the stories of his adventures with James and Remus (don't think about the traitor), all the regrets he has had in his own life (many), tips on how to get through NEWTS (and cheat when needed), and so many small things like how he should ask Ginny out (Harry is hopelessly oblivious) when the time is right, or big things like how the pureblood mentality needs to be changed for the betterment of the wizarding world.

He was sorry for leaving Harry alone. Again. He never should have gone to the Dursley's, those hateful muggles. I should have been the one to protect him. Now he could only regret. "How did I let her hit me?", Sirius questioned his own ability.

The grin that was already plastered onto Sirius' face slowly turned to shock. Oh, the cruelty of his world! His eyes darted back towards his cousin, Bellatrix Lestrange who was laughing as he flew towards his death. What happened to his arrogant but fiercely loyal younger cousin? What had changed her into this cruel woman obsessed with torture and the approval of Voldemort? He knew that his family had long since been broken.

His grandparents Arcturus and Melania passed while he was locked away in Azkaban. He loved his grandparents, seemingly the only two sane ones in the whole family. He remembered his many arguments with his parents Orion and Walburga. Sirius hated them at many points in his life. Yet they too perished.

Now he could only sigh, "I wish it did not have to be that way." Now his family will be no more. He remembered his naive brother Regulus. He had disappeared at the end of the last war, "I wonder how he met his end?". Sirius could feel the weight of his regret in his chest grow heavier.

Sirius remembered his friends. Remus, the poor soul is the last of the marauders. "You will have to protect Harry now, you lovable fuzzball... Tonks has a thing for him... He won't approve, but it would do him so much good".

Soon his mind drifts to Tonk's mother and his own beloved cousin, Andromeda, "I'm sorry I can't keep an eye out for tonks anymore."

James and Lilly, "I can't protect your son anymore, not that I have done a good job of it. Please forgive me."

Sirius could no longer grin. He had let all of the people he loved down. With this last thought, he looked back to Harry. One of the biggest joys of his life was being this boy's godfather. Harry was crying reaching for Sirius even though he knew he would not save him. At this, a genuine smile appeared on his face. Harry Potter... I wish you the best.

Sirius Black fell into the gateway of the Veil.

His view went black as all of the warmth in his body was sucked out. The whispers that had been background noise in the room grew in volume and as he passed the curtain-like entrance of the Veil, and they suddenly stopped as he passed. Now there was nothing. It was the common thought that the Veil was the gateway to the land of the dead and that the whispers were loved ones trying to communicate. Yet there was nothing behind the Veil.

Sirius began to fall into that inky blackness that is death, "This is easier than falling asleep..."

Sirius' soul began to drift deeper into the void towards that eventual fate that all men share. Yet at this moment magic began to move. The soul that had once been moving to whatever comes next was pulled onto another path. This woke Sirius' consciousness from death's slumber as his soul was moving against the natural order.

" FFFFUUUUCK!!!!! WHY AM I IN SO MUCH PAIN!?!?!", the mouthless cry of his soul was met with no sympathy by the magic moving him in a new direction.

Sirius felt as if his very being was being stretched as he was pulled out of death into the void. Now conscious, Sirius tried to observe his surroundings. Which was difficult as he was nothing but an ephemeral soul. There was nothing aside from the magic moving him, to what he did not know.

"I'm pretty sure that this is not how death is supposed to work." Sirius thought. Nothing about Sirius' situation felt natural to him. He felt that he was in opposition to the laws of the universe, in opposition to his own fate.

All of the thoughts he had as he was dying came back to him, and the smile he had in his soul turned to tears as he came to terms with the fact that he let everyone he knew down. He was dead and no longer able to help those he loved. Then once again there was light. He was standing with four others surrounding the boy he loved so much. He smiled with joy at seeing Harry and then came to the realization of who else was around him.

James and Lily were standing across from himself and Remus. Sirius was shocked, this should not be possible. He watched Lily and James comfort the boy who looked pale and frightened.

Harry almost whispered, "Does it hurt?". Sirius didn't understand, "What the fuck is happening? What has happened? Harry why are we all here?...", numerous thoughts ran through his own head but his body did nothing but grin at the boy as he felt his mouth give a different response.

"Dying? Not at all, Quicker and easier than falling asleep."

Sirius watched as Harry's gaze hardened along with his resolve. Sirius felt his head reeling, why was he telling his godson these things? Sirius felt nothing but shock in his soul. He watched as Harry apologized to Remus about his death and child. Sirius' heart sunk even deeper into despair.

"Remus was the best of us why did he have to die? And he has a son? Does that mean all the children of the Marauders are orphans?", but his soul-wrenching thoughts never met his lips.

"They won't see you?", said Harry to the four of us. Once again Sirius felt his body move as words came to his lips, "We are a part of you. Invisible to anyone else". At this Harry nodded and resolutely marched into the forest. Sirius had no choice but to follow.

When Harry stopped, Sirius' heart sank. He felt the most despair he had ever felt. More than when he learned of Lily and James dying, more than when Hagrid did not let him take Harry and raise him, more than when he was sent to Azkaban for attacking that traitor. He watched as Harry Potter stood before Voldemort and his Death Eaters. Sirius then realized what was happening, Harry was letting himself be killed so that everyone else may live. The scene melted into darkness as Sirius saw Harry drop a polished black stone.
