Chapter 3: Awakening

Byeol jumped backward. This thing has never happened before. Suspicious of the gate he walked backwards. But he suddenly stopped in his tracks. An unknown feeling emerged in his mind along with a deep voice.

"Advance." The voice sounded deep and ancient. It had a feeling of authority that he couldn't go against. Against his will, his legs started moving towards the gate.

No matter how much he tried to resist it, his body moved forward. The moment he passed through the gate, the atmosphere changed drastically.

The only way he could describe it was pure and holy. Something sacred.

He looked around and he saw plains filled with grass for as far as his eyes could see. The only thing in this plain was the two large trees in front of him, each of which occupied an area larger than a football stadium.

One of the trees was full of red apples while the other tree was full of an unknown fruit that he couldn't identify. The fruit was also red in colour but appeared to be a little more elongated.

But what caught his attention the most was the large sword that was stabbed on the ground between the two trees.

The sword was black in colour and appeared to be burnt out.

He didn't know why, but he felt a sudden urge to hold the sword. An overwhelming urge.

The feeling was so great that he didn't even notice the excruciating pain that he was experiencing at the moment. He also didn't realise the pieces of bone penetrating out of his back, nor the fact that the bones were slowly being covered with flesh, followed by golden and white coloured feathers. He also didn't realise how his hair changed from dull grey to a metalic silver colour with golden hues.

No.

The only thing in his mind was the sword.

He put one foot ahead, then the next, then the next, then the next. Ignoring the burning sensation that he was feeling was closer he got to the sword.

After nearly an hour of struggling, he finally arrived in front of the sword. His clothes were long incinerated and his skin was covered in vicious burn marks. His flesh was melting and his skin was burning, but his wings, hair and eyes were completely fine.

He looked down on the sword. His disfigured hands, a few inches away from the grip. With great effort he finally touched the sword.

Go Gun Hee was lying in the bed along with his wife when his senses as an S-Rank Hunter started blaring loudly. The warning was coming from a few rooms down the hallway, where his son was sleeping.

He could feel a huge amount of mana being radiated from the room. He quickly shook his wife, who woke up almost immediately. Before she could ask what happened, he answered.

"I think Byeol is having an Awakening."

Without saying another word, both of them got out of the bed and walked towards Byeol's room. Gun Hee pushed the door open gradually and saw his son lying down on the bed, face up, while sweating buckets and taking fast and deep breaths. His wife immediately dashed forward and sat down beside Byeol, thinking of ways to help his son. But he put a hand on her shoulder while muttering, "This is normal. We can do nothing to help."

His wife's expression turned into one of helplessness but before she could do anything, he just held her shoulder and spoke again, "Believe in Byeol. He can do it."

Even though Gun Hee himself was confused. This never happens in all the Awakenings that he has witnessed. But he remained calm and collected for his wife.

Suddenly, without warning Gun Hee grabbed his wife and hugged her tightly. Then he made a dash towards the windows and broke through them, jumping towards the ground.

Immediately a loud explosion occurred behind them in Byeol's room. Gun Hee looked behind himself and saw his son standing in his room.

Behind his son two large wing-like structures along with two smaller wings were visible. In his hand was a bright coloured flaming sword.

Go Gun Hee dropped his wife on the ground and then rushed back to his son.

The moment he entered the room, Byeol turned his head towards him. But suddenly, he fell down to the ground, unconscious. The sword disappeared from his hand but the wings stayed on his back.

Go Gun Hee, not sensing any more danger, picked his son and then leapt out of the room. Ignoring his wife he made a run towards the nearest hospital.

"Ugh" with a groan, Byeol tried to wake up from his bed. He had the weirdest lucid dream ever. In his dreams, he had grown two sets of wings on his back. He also held a sword which kept on producing large amounts of flames.

*Rustle*

He suddenly heard a rustling sound. He felt around himself with his hands as he still felt a little drowsy.

*Rustle*

The rustle sound kept on coming. He felt something like feathers around him. With a frown and half-opened eyes he looked around and saw his mother sitting beside him.

"Mom! Where did you get all these feathers from?!" He shouted towards his mom, thinking she was just playing a prank when his mother suddenly grabbed him by the shoulders and hugged him.

"Uhh?"

"Thank God! Thank God you are fine!"

"Mom? What is going on?"

His mom separated herself from him and shook his body violently.

"Open your eyes idiot!"

Hearing her shout he immediately opened his eyes and became confused. He was in what appeared to be a VIP hospital ward. He was lying on a bed which was covered with feathers. Beside him his mother was sitting down on a sofa but his father was nowhere in sight.

"Is he awake?! Can I come now?" He suddenly heard his father's voice around the corner of the room.

"No! You are going to stay there until I tell you to get up!"

"Noooooo!"

Byeol ignored his father's scream of despair he touched the feathers on his bed.

"Uhhm mom. Why are there feathers on the bed? Some new kind of treatment? Why am I even here in the first place?"

"... Can you stand up?"

"Uhm. I think so?" Saying this he slowly got up from the bed. The rustling of the feathers increased but he paid them no mind. He stood up on the ground but suddenly all the feathers also moved simultaneously and created two large sets of wings behind his back.

"..." Byeol was left speechless. He turned his body to the side and the wings followed him. He twitched the muscles on his back and the wings moved with twitches.

"Those are yours. You have awakened."
