Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Breakfast with an Immortal

“Breakfast is ready.” Caine whisked the cooking pan off the fire, not meeting Vix’s eye. She watched him as he made the finishing touches to the meal, desperate to push him harder.

She was tired of dancing around the topic. She had to know more.

Broad strokes of shadow fell on Caine’s face as he speared sausages on the end of two sharp sticks. Wordlessly, he handed one to Vix, along with a slice of bread. She accepted the food. The smell started her mouth watering. But she did not eat. She watched Caine, silently waiting for him to continue.

He sat down heavily next to her and took a large bite out of a sausage. He winced. “Ish ‘ot.”

“What?”

He swallowed. “It’s hot.” Next, Caine ripped off a large hunk of bread next and shoved it whole into his mouth. The chewing went on for a very long time.
